Kaaya as the starter- Kind of long

Thing is, we don't need Kaaya to be great. We don't need a QB to be great. Now of course it would be a **** of a bonus, but what we need is a solid season from a QB, any QB. We need good decisions and distribution and we need a guy that can make a play or two when it breaks down. Not asking for the world. No reason a talented true freshman can't accomplish that. I don't know if Kaaya is that guy but we don't need Manziel or Winston to walk through that door. We just need something steady at this point.

I think you don't appreciate how difficult accomplishing this really is. Like as long as the frosh just takes the what the D gives him all will be good. The problem is that coordinators will throw so many pre-snap looks at him that he might not know what the D is giving him. As a D coordinator, I would so much rather play against a true frosh with talent (that can't run), than a 5th year senior that is average. I would take my chances pressuring a young and dictating what the offense does.

While I whole-heartedly agree with what you're saying, it's pretty tough to accomplish for a young guy.

My best guess back BEFORE Olsen got suspended was that Kaaya would beat him out....I'm simply not a fan of Olsen's accuracy (or lack thereof) issues.

God bless Heaps...but the fact of the matter is the kid was ranked something like 127 out of 128 division 1 QB's last year. Make all the excuses you want but that's a damning stat.

I'm riding with Kaaya, at least until Williams is ready to go. I said it in another thread and I can't really put my finger on it, but for the first time in a long time I actually have a good feeling about one of our QB's.

True Frosh QB who played okay for us

How quickly they forget

If Miami had a great defense I would say it's not bad but, their offense will have to score points to win games. Unless the defense steps up tremendously

I've seen LSU go to National championship with a bad QB

Wanna know how I know you're not a 'cane fan?

I'd start him too if he's capable. Would rather not go through back-to-back years with first year starters at QB.

Barkley and Chad Henne are the only other two pro-style QB's at big time programs that I can remember starting as true freshmen and having success in like the last 15 years. I seem to remember Barkley being an early enrollee too.

100 % we can win the coastal with kaaya.

If the defense steps up and duke stays healthy, this team is far more talented than anyone else in the coastal. Were not talking about a national championship right here, were talking about the ACC coastal division and beating out Duke.

I'm all in for starting Kaaya, just use him the way Miami used Morris when Jacory got hurt vs Virginia. Miami relied heavily on Mike James and Miller and asked Morris to throw when necessary. Kaaya looks far better than Morris did as a frosh, and Duke with committee can eat up some yards. This season is going to be decided by the D, if they play well we can win with a True Freshman starting.

Im certainly not making it sound easy. No way. I don't expect Kaaya to be that guy. I'm just saying it is possible and we don't need some transcendent talent like Winston or Manziel to accomplish it. The odds are long, way long for a true frosh. **** we can't get a senior to make good decisions, we as Canes fans should know how difficult it is. Just saying I haven't writeen Kaaya off because we aren't asking much at this point.

Let me put it this way. The weapons are there for this kid to take off. Don't even bull****. I believe in Kaaya. And he won't have to be the first option. It will be Duke. Would not surprise me to see Kaaya running out their Labor Day as our guy. Here's hoping for some record breaking from Duke. And for Kaaya to break freshman records. Think he has the weapons surrounding him to do damage.

Duke, Yearby and Gus will be the focal point of the offense no matter who the qb is.
I wouldn't be surprised to see us average 40-45 carries a game.

If we do one pass without a play action fake, somebody should be fired.

The toughest part of a true freshmen winning the coastal is our schedule. The very first game is a must win. If we lose to UL and (very likely) to FSU then it probably doesn't matter what we do against coastal teams. So in the next 25 days, he'd have to learn how to read a college defense but he's only going to see one defense in that time. Kaaya is my favorite of our QB's but that is severely tough. If he was here in the Spring, then maybe it wouldn't be asking as much but even that would be tough.

Hate to be this optimistic, but I'm not worried. I think if Kaaya can at least be marginal in his freshman season we can win the Coastal. Everyone is panicking like the Coastal is so difficult to win while failing to notice every team in the Coastal is down. VT's defense isn't the same plus Thomas is gone, UNC is overrated, and Duke got lucky. Anything below 9-3 this year with whatever QB is a failure on Golden's part.

It has nothing to do with the coastal teams. We play Louisville on the road and FSU. VT plays Wake Forest and Boston College in the Atlantic. Duke has WF and Syracuse, I believe. If we go 0-2 in our crossover games, sweeping the coastal might not be enough.

1. Awesome original post - nice insight
2. Winning with a True fresh QB is very tall order unless all the right pieces are around (including defense)
3. In these early stages at his first practices it seems HBK is being molded into a starter even if there is a temp starter senior transfer this season
4. Olsen could be a **** good and experienced (with the play book) #2 for a couple years while we develop Lawson and possibly Allison if Olsen cleans up his act
5. Depth at the QB position is key
6. I just realized after typing all of this that everybody knows all of this crap already. I bring nothing to the table.

Bernie Kosar was a redshirt Freshman

if we start Kaaya- that means at least three losses. no way are we winning the Coastal if we don't win the first game- and we are not going to win the first game..
