Josh Pate take on Mario

Mario is a good coach. His value is a great recruiter, and he will have a great OL, and he will have a tough physical football team.

He isn't perfect, he has flaws like most coaches, but he is a good football coach, and the best coach Miami has had in a long time.
Chances are Mario will have us winning 8-10 games a season consistently, maybe once in every 6-7 years we have a 11-1 season. Which I'm honestly fine with because it was far worse before. If our next 10 seasons were like this I would be satisfied

2025 9-3
2026 8-4
2027 10-2
2028 11-1
2029 9-3
2030 8-4
2031 10-2
2032 10-2
2033 12-0
2034 8-4

2 conference championships and 3 playoff berths

That would be a 95-25 record over 10 years not including post season

Mario had and has to rebuild the program into a consistent, sustainable, conference championship and playoff contender. Whether he can do it or not time will tell. There’s no question the 2024 and 2025 teams were amd will be far more talented than Manny’s final roster in 2021. Is the roster perfect? No, the Canes lack depth at several spots, and we need starters to step up at defensive tackle, linebacker, and in the secondary.

But I’ll wager every team in college football, even the preseason top five has positions where they have questions.

I also think Mario has addressed problems in his staff quite well. Nobody gets ever higher perfect. The first staff was a complete disaster, and that’s on Mario. Like the roster, the staff have improved each year. Looking forward to see the defense this year. They can’t be much worse than last year. I’m not expecting the 2001 Canes but expect the defense to be improved by today’s standards.

Compare that to what Dabo Swinney has done since he arrived at Clemson and that would be very disappointing to be seeing 8-4 seasons going forward

Overall, I still land on the side that Mario is a solid and capable HC who understands what it takes to build a sustainably elite program. When he first got here, everyone knew he was stepping into a bad situation, but I don’t think people realize how truly bad this program had been run, in all aspects, for the better part of 20 years. The talent level was deplorable(especially in the trenches), strength and conditioning was bad, development-coaching-financial investment all bad. This program was being run like a vacation resort with no accountability and no desire to be great from the top to the bottom. It hasn’t been all sunshine and roses under Mario, I don’t think anyone would dispute that. Still, you can see the vision, and that this program is being run the proper way. Our W-L record has improved every year under Mario, and it honestly feels like to me that this team is about to break through and take off. For many years it felt like the foundation of the program was built on smoke and mirrors, but now the foundation is strong. 2025 is going to be a great year, I believe.

Improved vs the worst we’ve seen?

You set a high bar friend.

my top 3 areas to improve:
- special teams
- penalties
- the 6 game defensive slide was unreal, and I want a HC that can make a difficult decision to fix it (in season)... taking play calling and formation away from Guidry and finding someone in that D coaching circle that could of turned it around and/or at least not be so trash....

Somebody smart had a post or thread a while back about how quality depth was a factor as much as anything else. Look at our 2000-2002 run, the backups could replace the starters without missing a beat. Look at our 2017 run, once a couple of key starters got injured, we lost 3 in a row.

Here's a hat tip to you, smart CIS poster who I can't recall.

I swear our fans have collective amnesia this time of year every year. The facts are Manny has the same record as Manny did through 3 year, despite being paid about 10x more and receiving about 100x more investment from the school and boosters.

So far to this point his game day deficiencies have resulted in about -2 wins every year. I don't see any reason to believe this will change any time soon and at this point he's significantly underperformed his salary.

mario is a subpar x an os guy
however he emphasizes O line
with that in my mind my take is that under mario you will always have a high floor
bc if you have a good O line that will always prevent you from completely tanking offensively
but I dont know how high his ceiling can get

i agree about the records
but if you compare manny vs mario rosters after 3 years
its nots close

Josh knows that and hates it too - believe that... but he also knows what he has to do to keep the lights on. I ******* hate youtube thumbnails with a passion.
Yeah I was really just making a joke. I’m in the content creation space surrounded by friends that are fitness influencers

It’s all so *** but it is what it is. People are basically barely functional brain wise now so shiny objects are required

What if in 2025 Miami beats Notre Dame Florida and Florida State but manages to blow two games to crappy ACC teams again? 10-2 regular season but no ACC championship game.

Is that better or worse than losing to all 3 of those teams but otherwise beating all the other ACC opponents and playing for a conference title?

I know it’s not really on topic but what ever, it’s the off season. Stupid conversations like this MUST take place.

manny had some success because he hired Rhett lashlee. his teams were built on gimmicks. once lashlee went to SMU we would have been cooked.

mario came in and while year 1 was a disaster, the roster and floor of the program has risen.

you want to compare the side by side records but how about we are not getting 700 yards ran on us by UNC or doing slip and slides on the sidelines when we beat Duke

Not taking a knee was his year 2 blunder. Blowing a 21-0 lead against Syracuse was his year 3 blunder. Let's see what happens this year. The secondary should be much improved.

Under Mario we havent really had a game where we just got dominated like we have in years past. Even when Richt brought us to an ACCCG, we lost something like 31-3.

He's not perfect, but he is better than Manny.

Manny inherited a roster with NFL talent, Manny handed off a roster full of ****. But continue to overlook that part.....

After 3 years of having the most expensive coaching staff and biggest NiL budget in the ACC. While Clemson and FSU are down. Let’s take a look at his accomplishments:

ACC Titles - 0
ACC Champ game appearances - 0
Playoff Appearances - 0
Bowl games - 2
Bowl Wins - 0
Using the Manny comp, after 3 years were we on the same trajectory as we are with Mario? That said, does a 10 win season count for anything?
