Josh Pate take on Mario

Mario is a good coach. His value is a great recruiter, and he will have a great OL, and he will have a tough physical football team.

He isn't perfect, he has flaws like most coaches, but he is a good football coach, and the best coach Miami has had in a long time.
They are all judged for some reason until they win a natty. Which is retarded asf. Everyone knew Kirby would win one, he was trash till he wasn’t according to those types of fans. We got a good coach, we know bad coaches, or at least we should know we saw them with our own eyes just recently. This is not that, we finally have a real head cfb HC. Just fans are impatient asf acting like we OSU, like if a guy has to come in here and hit the floor running like if we were a power. We were straight ***, but since fans were hanging onto the “we have elite talent that’s not being coached up” bs lie, they are quickly impatient because that’s their thought process. And they fail to realize our roster was mid or lower regardless of rankings. Eyeballs over rankings

We were basically like a NYG’s rebuild right now. The worst of the worst

Mario has his flaws, and last year was a disappointment in a lot of ways. That said, he has vastly improved the talent level on this team, made us nationally relevant, and raised the expectations of the program.

Absolutely no question this program is in far better shape than it was when he got here.

An area I believe Mario has limitations when compared to other great coaches is that he was a position coach vs a coordinator. I'm sure this argument has been made before, but most of the head coaches that seem to have some steady success handled one side of the ball fairly well. I can be mistaken, but not many come to mind. Drag away.

The issues were called out here while changes could be made: DL help and DBs and once the season came, that was our doom. Also running the same trio out there getting picked on between LB, S and CB was just insanity.
Understand the frustration, but there weren't workable options on the roster once season started. The issue was not addressing properly in off season which Mario admitted, and went all out this off season to address.

He is who we thought he was.
-good OL
-good recruiter
-raises the floor of the program
-questionable Gameday decisions

He is still TBD if he can be more than that.

With that said, great coaches don’t grow on trees so I’m not exactly sure who would necessarily be better than him right now that would realistically come here. But that’s my take

A few things -

(1) turnarounds are turnarounds for a reason. This program was NOT good nor were the players. We had a few but the majority were not anything more than JAGs. Dwinstitles is SPOT on.

(2) you need a great QB to win. We had that in Cam and I think we will have that in Carson. Outside of that, we don’t have anything. We need a portal QB ASAP. Nickel could be great just very early - we need to see what he has.

(3) this team is far different than what Mario inherited. Even from last year. You don’t release the first 2 years Mario was here these guys were average sized. I was at practice on Saturday and I go every year for a couple of practices in Spring and I cannot begin to tell you how different we look. The team and the players they are recruiting are absolutely HUGE. Like the biggest humans I have ever seen. Scary big and athletic.

(4) lastly college football and athletics are very different than what they were. With NIL and paying players in the hundreds of thousands for backups has literally changed everything. This is a business and nothing more. Very little loyalty and it’s all about $$$.

We are lucky IMO to have Mario. Is he perfect no but he understands what needs to happen in this day and age.

Nothing will beat his original Avengers with the Broyles Award and the Man of Steele!
In fairness to Mario, they seemed like good hires at the time. I don’t know if any of us thought both those guys would turn out to be complete bums.

I’m not excusing Mario of the hires. Probably should have done more due diligence with Gattis. He really didn’t have much of a resume. That award may have clouded some judgement. Not sure what happened with Steele. He was just here collecting a check. By far my most disappointing coordinator of all time.

Unfortunately, there was no magic bullet for the defense last season. It wasn't good, and the injuries in the back end compounded the lack of talent already. Bain was never quite Bain after the hamstring, and that didn't help.

The 2 safeties were about as bad as you will see at tackling at the college level. There was nothing they could do with that group.

I saw the same DC the year before field a competent defense as he had 4 veteran pretty talented DB's.

The main coaching issue was not being able to address the concern, and/or overestimating what you had prior to the season. That certainly was not the case this offseason.
But that speaks to the fact Mario failed to construct a defense that was just average...just an average defense gets us into the ACC CG and CFP. It's great he acknowledged this and set out to fix it this season, but this is a results-oriented business and last year he blew it, plain and simple

Butch 2.0, less good at evaluating talent, harder working, even worse on gameday. Probably has his best staff he’s had since he’s been here.
Mario wishes he was Butch 2.0.

I understand what you are saying as both are hard workers, relentless at recruiting, and have that reputation as not good game day coaches. That’s where the comparison ends.

Butch dealt with probation and losing 30+ scholarships. He had to recruit and develop those rosters with no help. Mario gets advantage of NIL and the transfer portal. Butch was a savage. Not sure Mario is on that level. He’s tough for sure.

If he can do what Butch did, that means we will be elite and in the playoffs soon. Im rooting for Mario 100%. He does have us in a better situation than where we have been in several years.

Good special teams has to be stressed by the coaching
Staff and practiced. Butch was as bad as Mario on game day but always had very good special teams even when he didn’t have near the talent during the probation days that we have now.
One notable exception, Crossland was a terrible kicker, but he probably got that habit from JJ, who wouldn’t even recruit kickers. We got lucky as **** getting Huerta as a walk on.

Pate knows where his bread is buttered.

Hes going to toe the line perfectly because he wants to maintain access and keep his relationships intact.

Mario is an average coach. He does some things well and some things poorly.

Is he a good recruiter? Sure.

Has he missed on the vast majority of his highschool evals since he's been here? Yes.

Has he squandered a #1 offense and 1/1 NFL draft QB by not making the post-season? Yes.

Does he over-rely on Portal players? Yes.

In the ACC, how many head coaches comparatively surpass their expectations when you look at how much financial support they get and their recruiting classes?

Mario is an average coach who underachieves.

Yup. Butch always had pretty **** good staffs iirc.

How about talent development ? I guess it goes hand in hand with evals. Although one could argue Mario could recruit OL better.

Meanwhile Deion just got a raise to $10M pushing Mario further and further down the list of coaches salaries. I just wish any of y'all that always ***** about Mario would admit that he's not even a top 15 paid coach in CFB. He's barely even top 20 at this point.

So this idea that everyone acts like Mario is an elite coach and everyone is just blind to his negatives is hilarious to me. The haters always act like they're the ones being objective...while completely ignoring actual facts lol

Oh and the caveman fyzical coach just had the number one offense in the country. There are just straight up haters, period. You can have things you disagree with.... But come on lol

Coaches are only as good as the players they have. Mario has brought in a lot of good players. Last year, he didn’t have nearly enough in the back 7 on defense, and it cost him the playoffs. But this was a very good team in 2024. Even with the pathetic secondary, it was one of the best teams we’ve had in the last 20 years. Maybe the best? That’s for another thread, but it was inarguably one of the best we’ve had in 2 decades. Now he needs to do it again, but better. If Beck is truly Beck, I have zero doubt he can.
