Agreed that Herndon was a very good blocker. But also agree with the previous poster about Bubba Franks. For some reason (passing of time?) he doesn't get mentioned like Shockey, Winslow, Olsen, Graham, Njoku, etc. But Franks may have been a more complete TE than any of them. Was excellent for us and also had a long, productive NFL career.

The only time Herndon looked bad blocking was as a lead blocker from H-back on wham and power. He would sometimes struggle to get low enough to leverage the way a traditional FB would in that situation. Other than that, Herndon was about as well rounded as it gets. Maybe not super flashy in any one area, but he really didn’t have any deficiencies either.

Franks was already gone to the league in 2001 when quite a few of our current fans started following closely. Nobody should take this the wrong way, either. I’m not calling out bandwagon fans, and I really don’t see a problem with the bandwagon guys anyway. You like who you like, and I am no one to question your motives. In fact, I raise a glass to the people who have become Canes fans after 2004 or 05. That’s loyalty. I started following in the 80s when we were killing it and everyone hated us for it. In fact, that hatred drove me to Miami. I wanted to be the odd ball and pull for the team everyone else was rooting against.

But the simple truth is that a lot of our fans just aren’t old enough to have seen Bubba play. And that’s not a bad thing either. It just is what it is.

Very solid point regarding his blocking abilities from the H-Back role. I even remember him missing a couple blitz pick ups from the HB position. However, as you mentioned, he was a well rounded TE. I will go as far to say he was/is a very good and vastly underrated TE. He is not going to be in the HB position in the NFL, which means his only glaring flaw will not be of any relevance moving forward in his career. The jets became a much better team by having drafted Herndon.

I mean, I wouldn’t really call it a flaw, because like you said, he’s not an H back. He’s being asked to do something he’s not really built for due to personnel shortages, and he did the job just this side of pretty **** good.

I was being really nit-picky just to point that out.
 
Could Jordan be the first TE to be a Heisman trophy winner in 3 years? What kind of numbers would be needed for that? 15 TD's and 1500 receiving yards
 
I think Jordan & Mallory are going to be a historically good duo. Like something that’s never been seen before. I was just watching each of their film again. They’re as elite as elite gets.

They are the type of elite a position coach stays put for until the get drafts/graduate

If he had not gotten hurt he would have been a late 2nd-early 3rd round pick at worst. Jets got great value with Herndon.

Will be interested to see how fast Jordan and Mallory can develop over the next 3.5 months. There will be a learning curve. Most of our star TEs didn't really jump on the scene until the middle of their 2nd year. So its asking a lot for these kids to jump in and be ready day 1.
