Jim Kelly should have gotten Arthur Ashe ESPY

Agreed. Now if he would have done this in the 70s or 80s NFL...that would have been some eye opening ****...but today? It's really nothing more than a media slop fest as PC and litigious as our society is now...

Kelly definitely deserved the award.

What a thread. You Neanderthals make me proud to be a Cane. :ohlord:
Please explain why you think Michael Sam deserved the award. Look, this isn't about us having one view or another regarding sexual orientation. What did he do besides make the nfl network unwatchable for weeks?

You have to understand what the award is for. ESPN is honoring Sam for "his courage and honesty that resonates beyond sports."

Like other have stated, look at the homophobia in this thread alone, it's real.

If you listened to the speech, he told the story of the teen who was about to commit suicide. They were being bullied because they were *** and didn't feel there was anyone who understood what they were going through. Seeing someone on TV talking about the same things they were going through and seeing how people accepted them anyways gave the teen hope that they can also be accepted, saved the teens life.

How can one be upset at that?

I agree on the Kelly getting the award. But Sam deserve big props and the award as well.
Imo, he deserves zero credit for coming out. This isn't some condition that is threatening his life. Its a lifestyle he choose to live. Nobody would even care about it if it wasn't jammed down our throats by the media.
you sure his life isnt threatened just because of he loves? you think him coming out didn't affect his draft status; subsequently losing millions more he would've made? It's great someone like him is being "jammed down our throats by the media" because it allows a powerful platform for others hiding their sexuality to say it's ok to come out and gives other the courage to be true to themselves openly. All because an NFL player did so too. That matters. Now, I may disagree with your opinion but I do respect it.

Again, dude hasn't played a snap yet of NFL ball. He's as much as a NFL player as Eric Crouch was.

It's not homophobia that we feel he shouldn't get an award, but just like Jackson Jeffcoat being twice the football player Mike Sam is, but was drafted ahead of JJ, as JJ didn't even get drafted, and Jim Kelly actually doing something relevant in the NFL and life, fighting cancer and playing tons of meaningful snaps in the NFL, somehow because of his sexual orientation he gets the Arthur Ashe?

GTFOH if you really believe because he shared his sexual beliefs with the world. ***** please with this crap. One of Oprah's writers probably wrote his speech. Dude is a joke for not seeing how he is being manipulated by these networks.

You need to separate a "football" award with the Arther Ashe award. It's not about who was a better player or what was done on the field. Everyone understands what Kelly did on the field, who the better player is, no one is debating that, it's not a football accomplishment award.

Who cares who wrote the speech, the message is what's important.

Let's pray Jim Kelly will stay alive for a long while so he can earn the award next year.

i'm not so sure he lost out on anything draft money wise, from most reports i read he did not do so great at the scouting combine and is just not all that explosive off the ball and he's not big enough to be a true defensive end. people in the media were predicting him as a mid round pick but scouts thought different. actually if he wasnt *** he wouldnt be a lock to make the rams team that is loaded on the defensive line, but because of the media attention they will have to keep him now so him coming out is actually a benefit.

Sports aside, Jim still trumps Mike, sorry. Exposing your sexual preference ain't worthy of an award. He's a puppet.

If what Michael Sam did was not courageous, then neither was what Jackie Robinson did.

Just playing devil's advocate here if we are putting everything in the context of life threatening diseases.

**** ESPN. They trash our program every chance they get. **** them and their stupid award show.

Jackie Robinson didn't come out and say, "Hey, I'm black." Then was awarded awards, drafted when he wasn't supposed to, and so on. Jackie earned every **** thing he got and then some.

Please don't compare Mike to Jackie, not even close.

How has Michael Sam not earned everything he's been given? SEC co-defensive player of the year…not like he was some scrub.

But that's it. What has Jackie accomplished?

I agree on the Kelly getting the award. But Sam deserve big props and the award as well.

why? first of all, he tried to use his sexually as a means to gain publicity. trying to sign back tv deals and what not b/c he "came" out...please spare me.

Jackie Robinson did not choose to be African American....African Americans were not accepted in any arena during that time....we were not thought of having the ability to compete with those of European descent during those times. He came into hostility, where Jim Crows laws were accepted in Southern parts of the country, where calling someone the "N" word was more than acceptable. That's why what he did was courageous.
Michael Sam chose his lifestyle; furthermore, being homosexual is widely accepted. There are laws in several states that allows marriage between such. Him "conveniently" coming out before the draft was not courageous...it was a publicity stunt b/c his draft stock was not there. Scouts saw that he was more of a product of scheme and who he played along the line w/ vs. his pure skills. No one ever heard of M. Sam until his last yr at Missou. The only reason why we know him now is b/c he's used his sexuality as his own personal platform. I don't call that courageous, I call that convenient.

Both are considered courageous for different reasons. Sam for being the first guy to have to take on an immediate overflow of disrespect for being something that not everyone in the NFL is. Read the comment section on any of tweets, many of them are filled with homophobic slurs.
And Jim for fighting through cancer and still making a difference in the community.
Both deserve recognition, you shouldn't get an award for doing something you are supposed to do IMO. Your story should be used as an example to make others stronger.

This is nothing more them Sam using it as a platform to push his agenda. Again, most people don't care what other people do in the privacy of their bedroom. As long as they are not injuring anyone and of legal age who really cares. Sam isn't the 1st football player to be ***.
