Jake Garcia

I didn’t. As bad as it sounds, I actually celebrated when he was injured at VT. The fans looked at me like I had lost my mind but that was the beginning of the Dorsey era. I was sick of Kenny running around for 5 minutes and then launching what would look like a punt for Moss to adjust to and save the day.
All that Miami team needed was a QB that could hit the broad side of a Bubba Franks. No one knew Dorsey was going to do what he did, but anyone paying attention knew the O was being handcuffed by a guy that couldn't get the ball into the hands of his extremely talented weapons. There's a reason Miami's O went off the last three games of the 99 season. The Kelly supporters tried to say it was because the competition was weak, but the fact was Kenny Kelly could not run the O that well, regardless of who we were playing.

They were pre Dorsey. I was thinking about all our QBs who’s had team success here, & they’ve all been transfers from Berlin, to King, & so far Ward.

Rosier had a successful 2017 season, but that slipper came off immediately in 2018. Kaaya was good for us, but not a lot of wins for him, although it could be argued if he stayed in 2017, we maybe talking about him in a way different light. He’s by far the most polished QB we’ve had; that OL sucked though.
Kaaya could have gotten us over the hump in 17, possibly a ship

I commend you for having a reason. But I'll just have to agree to disagree. Kenny Kelly should have never started a single game, and Covington should have been starting over Clement, easily.
re 96-97: Bad OL? Take the more mobile (Clement, KK) QB

Kenny Kelly redshirted in 1997 and wasn't on the team in 1996.

Do you think he should have started over Covington in 1998? Over Dorsey in 1999?

The QB's first job is to be a good passer. Clement was not sufficiently "more mobile" to justify starting him.

Exactly! That’s why I was so happy to see Kelly taken out. I know that sounds bad but it was the only way a much needed change was going to happen. Dorsey brought us back in that game and if not for our FB dropping a perfectly thrown ball right in his hands to stroll in for 6, the winning would have started that night. Still, I loved what I saw from Dorsey and left that game more happy than I had been in a while because the future was bright.

The bold is just a truism. Of course we couldn't have predicted the level of consistent success he went on to have. But, good lord, it was plain as day how much better he was (and more suited to the personnel, and system) than Kenny Kelly.

The 1999 team probably wins 11 games with Dorsey starting from game 1.

It was coaching malpractice.

In '96 Ryan Clement led the BE in QBR.

I'm aware of when Kelly was there, I'm saying you use your more mobile QB behind a bad OL which they had in 96-97 (and really 92-95 as well). Covington was a statue.

That said, the '98 OL + James was a great time to start Scott. Workhorse back with amazing pass pro ability and an elite all-around TE. Much improved OL from the 97 season.

Ken Dorsey is ruined if he starts right away in the '99 season. It worked out perfectly for him. VT feasted on him, think he would have fared well vs OSU, Penn State and FSU in '99?

He would have fared better against ECU, that's for **** sure.

The best way to overcome a weak offensive line is a good QB, not just someone who runs around. Dan Marino had ankles of stone, and played with highly variable lines. Richmond Webb, Keith Sims, and Dwight Stephenson were the exceptions, not the rules.

VT and FSU were the two best teams in the country. So, I still think he loses those games.

OSU was middling. PSU was overrated and we should have won anyway. I absolutely think Dorsey wins those games, and that he doesn't totally tank at ECU.

Kelly's first career start was vs. OSU. I don't see how he was in a different position than Dorsey, other than Kelly was older. He'd thrown a handful of passes in his entire career.

I'm genuinely mystified that you believe it was the right decision to roll with Kelly. To each his own, but my mind is totally blown. Dorsey was a good QB, Kelly was not.

Man that one sure brings back some memories. That was only one of a few games that I was glad we lost because I just wanted to get out of there alive. I saw one Cane fan just get sucker punched out of the blue for no reason. The more they got back into the game the worse things got and the police were losing control. My van was rocked back and forth for most of the way out. I left there glad their asses got flooded!

The others were games that led to terrible coaches getting fired.

I was initially commenting to laugh at how trash he's been... then I remembered:

Hoss- the Dolphins had VERY underrated OL like Roy Foster and Marino played 10 years with Webb, Sims, Tim Ruddy. Quick releases help, but plenty of bad OL's have ruined QB's careers. Dan always had a great TE as well.

Kelly 1- could move and 2- wasn't 18 years old. He was a bridge QB like a bridge champion in rasslin'. Never a long-term answer, but a great fill in athlete until Dorsey was ready. Kelly had already been a pro and experienced the grind of the minors.

Can't believe those Butch lover posters aren't dying at someone thinking he made a single mistake re anything. Must be their poker night.

Garcia is 2-0 w/ a 3 TD 7 int ratio.

Tried to tell u fine folks about Garcia. Now, we can let him go into infamy as one of the most hyped player in the 2020’s. He & Tate Martell, yiiiiiiikes.
He was hot trash.

And to think we had TVD as a starter and Garcia as the backup.....................................
There is audio out there somewhere of David Lake saying Miami has one of the best QB duos in TVD and back up Jeff Garcia in the country.
