Is VT defense legit?

If we can score 21 or more against them we will get the win, IMO.

Should be a similar game to the UF game.

Not sure what "to really put up points" means or what it has to do with anything. They put more than enough points to win. And that's all that matters. Doesn't matter if you score them throwing a beautiful tight spiral on an 80 yard pass, or if you block a punt or run in a pick 6. When you play D like they do, you don't need to put up 35 points a game to win.

That's fine. But that's a separate point from "Thomas is playing great right now." Playing well enough to win relative to how good their defense is, I wouldn't disagree that much. I think they are going to struggle when they play a team with both a good defense and a good offense.
But I don't think their offense is playing well enough where I would be that confident going into any game if I was a VT fan.

Unless we go on an early turnover spree (which, historically, is exactly what we have done more often than not the last 15 years against them) we roll

I think the 21 point number is correct. I think if you score 3 TDs (plus 1 point) against that D, it will be too much for that offense to put on the board.

And limit the ST mistakes. That's really where VT has always capitalized on opponents, both inferior and superior ones. STs are of utmost importance when we play them

I don't think Miami can afford to get behind in the VT game. It'll be a tough game. GT and VT have won the coastal the last 10 years. That has not changed. When you want to win it'll be between VT and GT. It's crazy that even when VT sucks they can have a 10 win season SMH Middle fingers to that team.

VT's special teams are not good this year. They weren't good last year. Just because someone coined therm Beamerball, and ESPN got a hard on for it, doesn't mean they always have food special teams. I think I remember reding somewhere that we actually blocked more kicks during Davis' tenure than VT did.

I dont understand everyone thinking Logan Thomas is getting better each year. His numbers are worse every year. They are on pace to be slightly better this year than last year, but that is because he had such a huge dropoff from his sophomore year.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/player/stats/_/id/480239/logan-thomas

I'm not looking at stats. I'm watching him play. And his last two games have been very good. Whitfield has done a nice job with him because he's starting to look like he did two years ago when everyone had their tongues up his ***.

This one will be an absolute war. Does VT play any good ACC teams other than us?

I'm not looking at only stats either, I just wanted to provide some extra evidence of his decline. I agree that he has looked better the last couple games, but thats 2 games. I could just as easily say he looked like absolute trash against scrubs like Marshall and ECU. He is pretty inaccurate and at times relies on his run game too much. At best he's inconsistent with the potential to have big games. He can be a playmaker, but he can also be a scrub. Lets see if they are in sync when we play them.

He completed 75% against UNC and 68% against UNC and averaged about 250 yards passing in those 2 games with 4 TDs and, most importantly, 0 INTs. I keep hearing that they have no receivers, but they must have a few for him to put up those numbers against decent ACC competition. Byrn and Knowles both look like pretty good receivers to me. Not great, but they're far from awful.

I think you guys are underestimating that team. That's all. If you want to keep thinking they stink go ahead. I hope you're right because I hate them.

By no means did I underestimate the team. My statements have nothing to do with the team. My statements are about Logan Thomas specifically. You have made my point for me. Based on his numbers to start the season and his career numbers, odds are the 75% and 68% passing are not the norm for him unless he magically turned the corner after the Marshall game. I'm leaning towards he just played some bad defenses and made the plays he's supposed to make and had a good day. Lets see if he can maintain it and what happens when he plays our defense, assuming our defense is as good as we all hope it is.

I've watched VT's last two games very closely, and Thomas is playing very well. It's not relative to anything. He's playing very good QB. He's a water buffalo running the football. He hasn't thrown a pick in 2 games. He's throwing over 70% completion percentage. And he's averaging about 250 yards passing. That's good QB play no matter what your defense is doing. If you disagree, then I'd love to know what you think good QB play is.

I said over the last two games, he has played well. And that's been good enough for his team to score 17 and 28 points against bad defenses, while getting two drives inside the 20 in both games.
Id take the way VT is playing offensively right now when we play them.

Canes will respect it the first half of the first quarter, then watch out. Their DBs will get burned by our WRs. Especially after creeping up to stop Duke.

Every year we underestimate VT and every year they get better as the year goes on.

Can't stand them, but respect them. It'll be a test, but at home, you have to win that game.

The only thing that scares me is this being the week after the FSU game. This has emotional letdown written all over it no matter what we do against FSU. Now, with that said, if there ever was a coach who would have the team prepared against a letdown, it's Al.

I think that Lolgan looks better because the teams he is playing suck donkey ****. they get zero pressure on him. he stands in teh pocket all day and still misses wide open guys.

the dude is a TE. period.

VTs defense looks really good but they are not elite - IMO.

having said all that, I still expect a dog fight since those guys always play us tough. it will be very rough coming off of what will probably be a very emotional brutal game vs F$U
