The way the rule was explained on the telecast, is that the runner cannot make contact with a fielder attempting to make a play on a ball coming to him UNTIL the ball has passed the fielder. If the ball is still in front of the fielder, and there's an expectation that he can make a play, then the runner has to avoid the fielder or be called for interference.
