It's that stupid zone stretch that Coley fell in love with at times last year.We weren't pushed by ANYBODY last year. So tired of hearing/seeing people say that dumb ****.
Watch WTF is going on up front and stop making general statements every time a running play doesn't succeed.
Majority of the time you'll see that we were either beat with speed (DL slanting) or our TE got his *** kicked. Our O-line doesn't move. They're very stout. When they can get a body-on-a-body they move people.
We might miss blocks, we might whiff or we might get beat across our face but we don't get pushed back.
Last night I actually went back and watched the first 3 quarters of last years F$U game(yes I am a borderline *********), and I was surprised at the success this team had at running straight at them. They were successful moving guys and giving Duke cut back lanes to get up field. The line seemed to struggle more on the outside slow developing runs where F$U's speed was able to get up field.
Oh, and I saw Snickers run out of bounce on 3rd down, a yard short of the chains, forcing a 4th down that Duke did pick up though.
You know what's funny? I understand the thought of a playcaller (like Coley) saying, "OK--we've run it up the middle 3-4 times in a row, and they're probably looking for it. We need an outside run." OK...fine. I get that. But you know what? A Toss works just fine. You can still run downhill from a Toss, and show the D a different look. You can run a Counter, which catches those guys who are cheating for the run between the tackles (and would take massive advantage of Duke's acceleration advantage against the front 7). Those two things tend to bounce outside, and would be change-ups from the normal Isos/Powers that we run really freaking well. I'm not even 100% opposed to running that Zone Stretch play, if we could execute it.
Where I have a problem, is that we cannot execute that Zone Stretch play well AT ALL. It's extremely rare that it goes for a gain of more than 2-3 yards for us. Why? Because we get beat to the edge by the defense every single time, and we don't get engaged with oncoming defenders. Our OL doesn't move all that well outside of the hashes...so don't freaking run there!
Run those other things like the Counters/Tosses that give you a semblance of an outside running game, that also are easier for OL's like ours to block up effectively. Don't run something that doesn't work for us like that Zone Stretch play, and throw away downs as a result.
Some will say that the Zone Stretch might set up things like the HB Pass or Playaction rollouts back to the weak side...and I get that. But you can accomplish the same things with other plays that will work when we actually run them, as opposed to the Zone Stretch which doesn't work well for us and our personnel...and guess what? The plays you want to set up will still work, it's just going to be out of a different playaction fake look.
Counters aren't complicated enough smh
