Look everyone at this point knows Swasey was never qualified for the job, and certainly isn't in 2014. Our entire S and C program is amateur at best.
BUT:
It never ceased to amaze me how so many coaches can be so inept at designing their teams as a whole. If you want to be a 3-4 2-Gap defense (in college), it makes more sense to be a power run up the guy smash mouth run based offense (as the case with Bama).
If you want to be a speed defense based on half man and getting in gaps and spilling, it makes sense to run a speed based high flying offense of whatever flavor you choose (like Oregon)
The reason I believe this to be true is b/c in college football the rosters are limited and there are no real scout teams. B/C coaches, including SC coaches, have limited contact with players, and therefore streamlined goals that fit every player make more sense. This way, at Bama, they can sacrifice a bit of speed in their SandC goals if it means a bit more power, b/c size and power work for both sides of the ball. At Oregon, they sacrifice size and power for speed, quickness, and pace. Both sides of the ball exhibit those traits. And Oregon and Bama have been model programs for the last several years.
In addition, I believe bend-don't-break defenses, especially of the 2 gap cover 3 variety, benefit MASSIVELY from having slow, ball control offenses that eat up clock and keep games in general low scoring. On the flip side, a team with an explosive, quick strike offense, often pairs well with an aggressive 3 and out or big play type defense. Why? B/c the gamble is worth it b/c in the event that your high risk defense breaks, it's going to usually be a quick score, allowing your dominant offense to immediately get back in. And often, in college, those gamble pay off at a huge rate bc college QBs are generally dumb and can't handle man coverage or speed rush at all, let alone blitzes.
And now we come to Miami, a team with a 2-gap, power based, bend dont break defense, with a shotgun spread and zone run scheme. How are you supposed to effectively train 85 kids when your physical philosophy on both sides of the ball is COMPLETELY opposite?
