In Fairness to Al Golden, Some Perspective....

He's had to deal with a lot? Did he have to clean up Randy's mess? No doubt. Has he been resilient and crafty to work around the cloud of the NCAA mess for recruiting, keeping players motivated, PR? Absolutely. Is he a good ambassador for the school? Yes. Is he a recruiting workhorse? Yes. We all had those hopes/expectations for him. One thing we knew we weren't getting with Al was a good Xs and Os guy. Ok, fine - we had all that other stuff to deal with.

Now we're in year 3. At what point, CANE4, do your expectations start to change? At what point do you start to expect fielding defenses better than 90s/100s? I get the improvement in record to 9 wins - but look at who we beat for crying out loud. We are better than this - we are better than that he's fielded.

At what point will his excuse making stop? Next year we're breaking in a first year starter who signed with Memphis out of HS and the year after that, we'll be starting a FR/SO. You can keep making excuses year after year.

IMHO, Golden's clock starts now. I'll give him a pass for years 1-3, but he's had 3 years to turn this program around and the product he's fielding looks to be getting worse. That is NOT a good sign. I am not silly to think we should be in NC contention and heck, I'll be fine with 8-9 wins as long as this team doesn't play like a bunch of laydowns all year long. This team has quit on its coach the past 2 seasons. Not a good trend.

If he doesn't make any changes this off season to offensive/defensive (moreso) philosophy, how much longer will you be making excuses?

Why do people think a coach should automatically get 5 years no matter what?

FOH. That needs to be earned. You have to show some sign of progression from year 1 to year 3 in order for me to say he should still be the coach. We are no better off as a team right now than we were in the very 1st game he coached against Maryland.

You don't get to stick around for five years when you have shown no signs of progression, improvement, development or being a competent coach in the first three years he's been here.

It'd be one thing if this team had shown flashes of becoming a good team...but just wasn't there yet. Or if we could legitimately see signs of improvement or that we are headed in the right direction.

But here we are in year 3 and there is no sign whatsover that we are headed in the right direction. Should he be expected to win 10/11 games in year 3? Maybe not. But by now we should at least be competitive against teams like Duke and VT, instead of getting blown out. By year 3 you shouldn't still be getting blown out by every legit team you face.

If we had played Louisville, or Duke, or VT, or FSU close....but lost in close competitive games it'd be a different story. But we are still getting blown out by every decent team 3 years in. There is no excuse for that, and that is why I'd fire him right now.

I'm all for giving a coach time. But not just for the **** of it. You give a coach time when he is clearly coaching under unfortunate circumstances, but has given you glimpses and signs that things are getting fixed and he is taking us in the right direction. Golden hasn't done squat to tell us that he is fixing things or that we are headed in the right direction. He has to earn patience and show me a reason that he should be given the time to get things going. And he has completely failed to do that. You want time? Ok show me something. Yes we're not there yet...but you gotta at least show me that we're heading there and improving. He hasn't shown that so he has to go. There has been no improvement from year to year under Golden.

i disagree, this team did not quit last year they were playing decent ball at the end of the season and would have gone to acc title game if not for probation. this team has zero depth and the upperclass had no leadership and played softer than charmin. Like it or not, we are two years away with or without (likely longer) Golden. all that matters now is recruiting and admissions...

How much time did uf.aag give Zook? How much better is Al Zookden doing than Ron Zook did?

Excellent posts on both sides. Golden needs more time and he better adjust on defense People wanting to fire him are low information reactionary types. They are a dime a dozen. He won 9 games this year but needs more talent. Thats doesnt excuse the fact that his DC was consistently outschemed and ill prepared. The Wake,GT and Louisville games in particular. That must change or its Golden's job.

3 years is low information? Amazing.

Seeing as how several have made the connection to Randy's 9-win season in 2009, lets also compare how each coach capitalized on the opportunity.

I'll be fair to him if he:

-fires D'Onofrio and hires an elite DC that fits SFla athletes
-fires Swasey and convinces the AD to get him a real qualified SC staff
-hires a QB coach, moves Hurlie to DBs, and has Coley coordinate, coach RBs and recruit
-fires Kehoe
- keeps the recruiting class together

i disagree, this team did not quit last year they were playing decent ball at the end of the season and would have gone to acc title game if not for probation. this team has zero depth and the upperclass had no leadership and played softer than charmin. Like it or not, we are two years away with or without (likely longer) Golden. all that matters now is recruiting and admissions...

This reply is bull**** for the fact is that we had no chance of going to the ACC championship last year if it weren't for UNC being on probation and ineligible itself. That's the only reason we could've gone, if not for our own self-imposed ban. We wouldn't have earned our way...because, as you should know, we lost to UNC last year.

OP is right. We could never be a private school who has a commitment to winning. Stanford and Baylor will never be in the BCS mix. Nor will USC or Notre dame. We might as well keep Golden and play quidditch all day like a bunch of fairies.

OP is weak. Golden is a *****. Doesn't have the back bone to do what must be done.

We could afford Bobby Petrino, a "superstar" coach. Capitalize more words next time.

Petrino would never stay here more than two years. Once a team bites the bullet and gives that guy a shot he will become a hot commodity again and he will be gone. That guys lack of loyalty is legendary, he left the Falcons in the middle of the season for gods sake if memory serves.

Completely disagree. Petrino would stay here and win big and then leave.

If Al is truly a Bill Parcels disciple, then let's use one of his maxims "you are what your record says you are." The record, to me, says he struggles to beat mediocre teams and then gets the doors blown off against good and elite teams. It also shows me that his defense gives up 500 yards to inferior teams REGULARLY and can't close out games. We get worse as the season and games go on. Duke and VTech are not Baylor and Oregon...but they gashed us. Our offense average 35 PPG and we all agree that Morris and our offense post-Duke was not very good. If you are averaging 30 PPG you should win every game against the BCs, Dukes, Virginias, WFs of the world by two touchdowns. We don't.

Secondly, we have gone into prime time two years in a row and been completely dominated going into the 4th quarter (35-24 vs VTech in '13, 35-14 vs FSU in '13, gave up 17 unanswered in the 4th q against FSU in '12 at home, 34-3 vs ND in '12, and 31-6 vs KSU in '12). We aren't even competitive. This doesn't even touch on the losses to Virginia(8-4 team) and BC (4-8 team on Senior day) at home in '11, UNC (8-4 at home) and Virginia (4-8 and maybe worst loss to-date IMO) in '12 and losing to Duke and VTech after being up early in both this year. I believe we have the talent to at least compete with these teams, but instead we lose badly. We have been outscored 254-120 vs ranked opponents (avg score of 36-17)

Finally, who is our best win? Florida? Maybe for us, but that team sucked and had a historically bad offense. They STILL put up 413 yards of offense on us! In 3 years, our best win this year (record-wise) is GTECH (we almost lost) and UNC (we almost lost)...they both finished 7-6! In '12 the highest record we beat was 7-6. The "best" win we have is again an 8-4 Georgia Tech team in 2011. THAT'S PATHETIC!! Good coaches find a way to blow out bad teams, win comfortably against mediocre teams and win against good team. We can't do any of those three. If you can really tell me that we don't have enough talent to beat 3-8 teams at home or 4-7 teams on the road then I have to question your objectivity and intelligence.

You know what's really sad? When really smart people refuse to apply their obvious intellect to issues that are too close to heart.

I respect the OP and I know he's an intelligent guy. To see him make reaches that would make Stretch Armstrong proud saddens me. Why you ask? Because it lets me know we've entered the last days of Coker/Shannon territory. When logic has completely abandoned arguments by normally logical people one can only surmise that indeed another apocalyptic era of Miami Football is drawing to a close. Because there is no god**** way you can sit here and say that there is any reason for NOT winning 11 games. When Duke, yes that Duke won 10 and beat Miami. Are people just going to overlook that?

Anyway, Golden has to go. He's not the guy we thought he was. He's mediocrity after complete incompetence yet we require and deserve excellence.

Also, when people pull out the "Wait we can't get Saban, or some other name guy" card is when its good night Irene. Because its disingenous and fails to note that none of those name guys were who they are right now at that moment.

Football is X/O's mostly with some other sh*t thrown in. There are brilliant football minds toiling in wastelands far and near and an ambitious and intersted AD/School Pres would turn over every stone to find them. So there you have the answer. We're not really interested in that are we?

Another canard we must throw out for the 14 is that Golden's time at Temple tells us anything. Sadly I was in the "well he won at Temple" brigade that stormed the Hills of Skepticism at the beginning of Goldens tenure. Fact is Temple guarantees you nothing. You just can't tell much, truth is hiring the guy is such a crapshoot look how long it took Bama to find Saban. Look at Chizik minus Cam. Look at Auburn with Malzahn. IMHO you need a X and O's guy first and foremost who has shown some imagination, and flexibility. Then you have to hope like **** you get a three pronged attack of School Pres/AD that gives him all the tools needed for success.

Look at Kelly he was not a guy the alumni loved and we hear all the time how big a deal that is. Yet he won, because he was a football lifer married to the game. I'm rambling but find a guy who's just a superior football mind and lets go from there. Jimmy and Butch were superior football minds as an esteemed poster has pointed out ad nauseum Golden ain't that boy.

Petrino would've won 11 games here last year and likely would've lost to FSU by 7/10 pts tops. We'd prolly score about eleventy billion points per game. IMHO Petrino wouldn't go anywhere if he came here. He's a different guy now.

Exactly. If Petrino was lucky enough to land a prime gig like UM he'd never think of leaving. He already showed the NFL isn't for him, and he could win NCs at UM just like he could at any other marquee program.
