IF YOU ARE MAKING AN EXCUSE FOR AL GOLDEN

The only hope is to stockpile talent and get him surrounded by good coordinators. Look at FSU with their new coordinators and assistants this year. We can't continue like this, that is for sure.

At least nobody is going to be calling for Al any time soon. I'll give him one more year before officially getting on board the get rid of Al train.

I'm not on the get rid of Al train because it's a train going nowhere. He's not getting fired any time soon. He does suck though.

I like Golden, and I want to see him succeed, but its hard to ignore how bad this defense has been the past two seasons. Its been said numerous times, but his loyalty may be his undoing. If he wants to keep this philosophy he believes in so much, he at the very least needs to bring in guys who run it better, and position coaches who do a better job teaching technique. I would look to a pro staff that runs this type of D. The Steelers seem to be pretty similar, there has to be a young position coach out there that could do a better job on game day.

Anybody that thinks we haven't improved since Shannon is a complete idiot....period. We have a ways to go, and Golden is responsible for the coaches he has on staff, but you hysterical females are pathetic the next morning. Carry on, though
Where have we improved?

Improved in basics like...fewer penalties, fewer burned timeouts, better kick and punt return defense...

Do you think we have improved in tackling, maybe over last year, but compared to the beginning of this year, this has been a real problem and contributing factor never to be able to bet off the field on 3rd down.

You have a point. Why would tackling get worse in the same year with the same personnel? Fatigue -- mental and physical? Morale?

I will make this excuse for Al. Hes a young guy. As a young DC at UVA he was successful and turned that into a head coaching gig. With his right hand man they won games at Temple. Something that everyone said was gonna **** near be impossible when he took the gig. So you are a young guy and you've had two stops both of which ended with you moving on to bigger and better.

So now your at UM year 1 at a new place and the NCAA **** hits. Hey its a **** show. I can't blame him for thinking that was a big problem with the defense. Year 2 our talent level sucked. Looking back I don't think it was worst defense in the history of UM football bad but it sucked none the less. So here you are year 3. You have always had success. The talent level has improved and bam ACC teams are lighting you up again. Question is will Al look in the mirror and make necessary changes or will he make another excuse to justify the **** poor defense. I really can understand his mindset for not making a change so far but not anymore.

Everyone keeps blaming the philosophy and completely ignoring the fact that we don't have the talent. We will have a major upgrade next year once this class comes in we just aren't there yet

Right, because VT has highly rated recruiting classes on the norm. Crazy how they can field a Top 5 defense (and generally great defense year after year after year) with prospects that none of the elite schools really target. I thank you for reminding me that Wake Forest (the team that has scored 3 points since playing us) has more talent on offense than we do on defense.

Anytime we have to put guys like Cornelius, and highsmith on the field for major minutes it's going to be a problem. Vtech has a system in place and has depth something we don't have on d

VT has one of the worst offenses in the country. What about Wake Forest? I know, stopping and adjusting to the wide splits is impossible without 5 year, 5 star talent.

We have guys with more talent playing behind them. McCord, Carter, Figs, and Kirby all have more talent then the guys in front of them. It appeared we went with the more veteran players because they knew what they were doing but we still have busts all over the place.

The defense is beyond repair. I promise you Duke will put up at least 50 points. Virginia will be a war and we lose to Pitt. 8-4. Eh...

McCord is 230 pound defensive player and not a 4 down player. Figs is great athleticly but has no clue what he's doing out there he's a year away. The knock on carter coming outta high school was that he was just a athlete playing football without a true position he obviously doesn't have a understanding of the game or he would be playing over garbage *** highsmith

Reminder: in '84, the defense completely broke down in the second half of the season. A year later we were in contention for a nc.

I mentioned this somewhere else. D'Onofrio has been saying we need more takeaways and turnovers so are the kids being asked to strip the ball rather than taking the ball carrier to the ground. It sure looks like it.

I believe some aspects of the team has improved, but the **** we call a defensive scheme is down right ****. I love Golden, but I love the U even more. something needs to happen or he needs to kick bricks and move on. Two freshmen fumbling is unfortunate, but the defense should have stepped up! Point blank, that's what good teams do.

Lol @ppl saying Randy developed his guys. Sean spence couldn't bench 1 rep @215 at the combine lol this board is in full ****** mode.

Howard's DC was Tom Olivadotti in 1983. He left when Howard left and Jimmy got the job. I can't even remember who the DC was in 1984 except that he was fired and Jimmy brought in Paul Jett from Okie State to fix things and he did. Anyone remember a true soph named Jerome something or other breaking Troy Aikman's leg up in Norman, Oklahoma?
It has been done and can be done.
Does Al have the Stones to do it?

The man is a great recruiter...if he can stockpile talent....its a major advance.

If he can stockpile more talent, it'll make him look a lot better as a coach.

We just don't have the talent level of a "top 10" team.
