So in addition to Ed Reed taking his talents to Chamblee High, now we have the head coach at Edgewater High School (Orlando) moving to Marietta High School.

****. Sadly, I think GA high schools pay more.

I have 2 friends that are HCs in Georgia making 125k and 115k a year.

No teaching, no additional school system employment, just football. One gets a new Toyota Tundra provided/donated from a local car dealer every 2 years in July/August when the next year model rolls out.

And their staff budgets would align with a powerhouse D2 or even some FCS programs.

Insane. He’s turned down position coach jobs at FBS programs just because it’s so much more low stress and no recruiting responsibilities.

Wow. I knew it was better pay, I didn't know it was THAT MUCH better pay.

Had a friend of mine from middle school and high school, we first met playing Pop Warner together in 6th grade. He played in college and had a brief run in the Arena League. He eventually became the head coach at our HS (a very well-known and good HS in Orlando) and retired a few years ago because he needed to make more money.

Sad.

In Orange County I believe they receive a $3,500 stipend annually to be a HC. Added to whatever their salary is as a teacher, vice principal or dean of students.

I believe that is fairly accurate. Florida schools have always handled the compensation as a "stipend", and extra amount on top of doing "your day job".

And the Florida HS stipend has NEVER been large.

No reason you couldn't get local car dealerships to give leases to the head coaches at the larger public schools. It wouldn't fix "salary", but it would be a start.

I’m not aware of any high school basketball or football head coaches in metro Atlanta that do not make 100k. It’s pretty much the standard. I can’t speak for the state as there are some very poor areas in this state, but metro Atlanta its at least 100k. Of course it’s hard to buy a home or live in metro Atlanta for less than that so cost of living is a thing.

It’s not only income, the property tax and homeowner’s insurance rates are just ridiculous in this state now. Some people are starting to pay more in escrow for tax/insieance than the actual mortgage payment.
I’m literally considering the move myself if my rates go any higher.

Nobody wants to pay 2 mortgages for one house.
Hurricanes and wildfires. FLA and CA have and will continue to have the highest home insurance costs in the country by a wide margin. And both states are forced to provide secondary insurance thru the state, which means in both states, the taxpayers who do not live in areas subject to hurricanes and wildfires (does such a place exist in FLA?) are being forced to pay for insurance for homeowners who continue to live in areas prone to natural disasters. This will not end well, IMO.

Hurricanes and forest fires have a way of making insurance companies skittish.

I also hope that GA and other states pass "save our homes" laws that limit annual property tax hikes. One "advantage" that Floridians currently have.

I have spoken on this in previous posts. The stipend we receive as high school coaches are peanuts. Two grand or 2500 before taxes. And if the booster club isn’t ran properly, no little extra on the side. I have family who Coach in Texas, and in Georgia and the price differential is insane. If you really want to understand why our talent seems to be diminishing, the answer lies in the lack of coaching. We still have the same kids, but they’re not being developed, and that problem only going to get worse.

As a public school teacher that is completely ****ed.

Yeah and teachers make around $50-60k ish in the Orlando area…. I don’t know anyone who has bought a home for under $275k around here in the last 10 years. A lot HCs are Deans or VPs which would put them in the $80-90K range. But as stated the cost of living is high.

Younger guys like Cameron Duke and HC of Ocoee HS who left to be a DC at McEachern a couple of years ago are going to strike while their name is hot

There was an article in the mullet wrapper here in Jax a few years ago talking about this. At that time, there was around 40 head coaches in GA making north of 100k.
