How long do you give a coach to turn it around?

She's had enough time to turn it around.

She lacks the staff decision skills needed to go from an OK coach to a great coach.

That and his base scheme is beyond complex for the amount of time needed to implement at the collegiate level.

In short, inflexible people are not successful people.

At a Miami, Bama, FSU, UF, Texas, LSU 4 years. At a Duke, WF, etc 6 years.

Make or break season for Golden. Win the coastal, look competent, don't get blown out and show improvement over the previous seasons or GTFO.

The NCAA mess doesn't impact on field performance and that has been the biggest problem going on 3 years now.

Not sure of the point in debating this as most rational people will probably agree on two things:

A) We need an ACCCG appearance this year or Alfred actually would get the boot....in a lot of other programs.

And

B) This isn't one of those programs and this administration is going to give him at least 2 more years NO MATTER WHAT. Like it or not, he accrued that capital with this AD and Dahhhna.

All that said, I personally haven't had my USF moment with Alfred yet like I did with Corch. Be butthurt about the bowl embarrassment as much as you want too. Talk to me if we end this season against Pitt like Corch ended his career against USF and I'll join your ranks in giving Alfred a vote of no confidence but we still need to realize that he ain't going anywhere (against his will) anytime soon.

I believe the answer from the mope squad is "I've seen all I need to see after Maryland".

So 1 game.

Most have said 3-5 years. No one has been attacking either side till your post.

So congratulations on opening that door... smh

Just because he may not go anywhere else doesn't mean the fan base has to sit on their hands. If we come out and crap the bed against UL things will start getting hot.

I'm not saying you have to like it or even be quiet about it if that's the case but just don't believe that any hemming and hawing by our undersized fanbase will raise the temperature one degree in Hecht or Shalala's office.

I think it depends on the state of the program when a coach took over as well as the resources available to them.

For example if they took over a team with really, really poor rosters, sanctions, etc. then they should be given longer. Similary if a guy takes over a program who lacks prestige or is in an area that isn't talent-rich then he'd obviously need longer as well. Absent that, 4-5 years should be the standard amount of time. It allows you three full recruiting classes which should be enough to guage what a coach is.

My biggest thing though is I want to see improvement year over year. For the first two years or so I'm not really concerned about records...as much. If you have a 6-win roster then get me 6 wins. Maybe get 7. If you have a 4 win roster, then get me 5 or 6. If you have a 9 win roster then win 9 or 10 games. I want a guy that has his talent perform up to expectation and even has the ability to squeeze an extra game or two out of it. Make the whole equal or exceed the parts. That's a sign of good coaching to me.

I like the fact that team seemed to never quit the first couple years -- with a couple exceptions. Last year the players seemed to bail after the FSU game. Us liking or disliking Al is nothing compared to players buying in or giving up. Al started to lose me when he started throwing players under the bus for the poor defense during 2nd season and the even more last year. He made an informed decision to put his defense in place despite it being contrary to everything THE U stood for before. That was a risk. For me he fail. He defense is not for us and has gotten worse not better. JJ did not touch Howard's pro style offense. He did give us a 4-3 defense that we rode into the glory days. His risk was smaller because his defense fit the local talent better. Al gambled and it looks like he lost. If his D looks the same this year he needs to go -- no extra year to change because he has proven he will not.

Most people who are knowledgeable including insiders and outsiders think he's got two years to show real progress. Real progress being ACC Championship. Most don't expect that to happen this year, but fully expect to field a top 5-10 type team for 2015. I'm on the fence, going to hope for the best and enjoy my team. IMO failure to make the ACC championship by next year is a guaranteed termination. Failure to make it this year, gets the seat very hot.

I have always believed that you need at least 4 years before you make a decision on your coach. If after this season we are not satisfied with the destination we are going then I am ok with a change. I think if we get 9 wins nothing will change. We won't be in the talks for a national championship until we are fighting it out with teams for the best kids in the nation, and the fact is, we just arn't there yet.

I believe that the board sees him in going into year 2 right now. (due to NCAA mess)

If Al really was not given any indication by the school that the NCAA investigation was looming prior to his hire, they'll give him three more years.

I want to see what the team looks like next year and that will make the decision for me.

I want to see what the incoming juniors look like. I also want to see what the defense looks like.

Funny hearing Mope City in anguish over what they perceive as "flirting" when Golden was thought to be leaving for PS. SAME crowd calling for Butch, who not only "flirted" but actually left.

"Butch Davis left Miami scrambling when he betrayed his players and bolted for a big-money deal with the Browns"

http://si.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1021742/1/index.htm

"The easiest thing in the world to do right now is to jump on Butch Davis for, among other things, prevaricating to University of Miami officials, misleading their top football recruits, betraying a couple of the Hurricanes' premier returning players and generally making fools of the people who've been insisting for the past several weeks that Davis was on the level when he said he'd stay in Miami until the day he retired.

Yep, that's the easiest thing to do, jumping on ol' Butch. You know why it's the easiest thing to do?

Because it's right."
