How long do you give a coach to turn it around?

I assume when a college coach is hired he is typically given a 4-5 year contract but what factors go into whether or not he is given that amount of time?

I don't even know what our expectations are anymore.

Randy Shannon was given 4 years when some people say he should've gotten a 5th. However, Al Golden was originally given a 5 year contract and some people want him canned yesterday.

Ron Zook was given 3 years to turn it around

Gene Chizik was given 4 and he won a Nat'l championship

Kirk Ferentz took 4 years to take a 1-10 Iowa team to 11-2 and a BCS bowl

Mike Shula was given 4 years and won 10 games in year 3

David Cutcliffe took 6 years at Duke of all places to win 10 games. Should it take Al Golden 5 seasons to win 10 games or the coastal?

Ultimately, Al Golden is going into his 4th year and if he doesn't win 9 games this season should he be given a 5th?

After 3 years with zero improvement and zero signs that there will ever be imporovement, you send his *** to position coach for some other program for the rest of his career, like Radio.

If you insist on letting him stay 4 years, and he does a Radio 2010, you have him crucified.

every situation is different but it's usually fair to give a coach between 3-5 years.
Considering the situation Golden stepped into he should get 5 barring total implosion this upcoming season.

I didn't expect much from Golden right away but I had hoped to see more improvement. This year is make or break for me. His star class is now seasoned and should be ready. We play in a horrible conference. 4 years is fair in this situation for sure but I had expected more to this point, and I'm not talking just wins and losses.

Lets just get on with it already.

I think this year is enough. He needed to win the coastal last year and did not. I want ACC this year or it better be a bloody battle to the finish in the championship game. This defense needs to delivery pain to someone other than long time fans who remember what a defense looks and sounds like. A qb needs to step up. fail ANY of those and can the dude. If he had not collapsed so badly last year, then I would give him 5 but he burnt his slack last year. I have no problem with mid-season canning and bring in Greg or Chud to finish it out and save the recruiting class. At the start I would have said 5 but the attitude and refusal to actually accept the consequences of his failure as opposed just saying it is his "responsibility" while not admitting the level of abject failure has to cost him a year. Still I would fire Mark in a very public manner the first 500 yard game(so I guess the opener) and humiliate Al into quitting so we don't have to pay him.

Every situation is different but in the case of Miami and Golden's arrival.. To me he deserved 4 years. Maybe just maybe 5

This is one of those situations that fall into that grey area. I love what Golden has done with this program and what he had to fight through in the beginning. If we were not just coming off that investigation, I believe we would have been looking for a new coach. I believe this season is going to be important though. I have no problem if this team has 8-9 victories. But the way we finish and how competitive we are with every team on the schedule will be big. At this point, with all the talent we have on this team, there is no one who should DOMINATE us. I understand how good FSU is, but we need to be competitive all the way through that game. If we end the season like we did last year, I think Golden will either be forced to fire a good portion of his staff OR Just clean house.

This year should be it. If we aren't were we are suppose to be (winning the Coastal, looking close to Nat'l contender) then he should be gone after the year.

Because of the NCAA "cloud" mess, and Al getting blindsided with the news, I'm willing to give AG 5 seasons to right this ship. Usually 4 years to see vast improvements. 5 to right the ship.

What? A voice of reason in a coaching thread?? I agree with this guy...3-5. If we tank this year...Gold goes. But if tangible improvement is seen, in the win column, he gets year 5.

This. 10+ wins. He has the talent, now is the time to show it on the field.

Improving with wins is never my issue, but improving in your specialty is the issue. Defensive coaches usually have conservative offenses or they are not creative but defense is the focal point. We have a defensive coach and the defense has regressed every year. Even a lack of talent on defense can be hidden with certain tweaks or playing young kids who think less.

Some 'fix it' jobs are harder than others, but generally, what you see in years 4-5 is what you're going to get.

We have had a coach that actually won the coastal but had to give it up do to sanctions. Improved in wins each year.have recruited very well and always get some studs. He is right on track in my book to right the ship 4-5 years.

3 years to show that we are improving. 5 years to be a national title contender. After 3 years we really don't look improved yet. Golden just barely gets a pass for the improvement issue into year 4 because of the Shapiro mess, but with the talent we have, it better be a significant jump this year. 10 wins and we better have a top 40 defense (seriously, the defense request is not much to ask and 10 wins is very manageable in the ACC with a relatively softer non conf schedule this year). Otherwise I'm done with Al.

I'll go with 5. But his classes have taken over now as Randy's guys are low in numbers now. If the defense performs like the last couple of seasons and we still keep D'Onofrio around, then Golden needs to go after 4.

I'm pulling for Golden to succeed, and make all of us (including myself) look like fools. But I doubt that happens.

I think 5 years should be the norm, and you should start seriously judging at year 3. You want to give a guy a chance to get his players in, get his beliefs going through the program ect. Scheme changes are tough too, you can't just sign a bunch of free agents and make trades like you can in the nfl, it's all on the whims of 17 and 18 year old kids.

I like the roster Golden has put together, I think this season we need to see more then just some wins, but competitiveness is every game. We see that and year 5 the expectations should be sky high.
