How good is Ryan Williams?

Honest question how good do you guys think he is. I mean he couldn't be Steven Morris for the job so I guess that says a lot.

Considering that Morris only had one, single pass, I'd say Williams is going to remind us of what a real quarterback is capable of.

Those who say Williams "couldn't beat" Morris for the starting job should give their justifications for the assertion. Did you hear this from a coach? Did you hear this from impartial observers of practices? Otherwise, list the empirical basis for the assertion.

For those who have not witnessed practices (albeit, that's not the same as games) there is a limited body of work on one side and a substantial body of work on the other side. And, how many of us who have watched football for years have never seen a player with a limited body of work replace a player who started ahead of him and play better?

After watching Morris last year, it's hard to imagine Williams playing any worse. If he does win the job this year and play well, it will be an indictment of the coaches for sticking with Morris when he was so ineffective.

I don't get this argument. So because the backup can't beat the starter, the backup can't be good in the future.

Mark Sanchez could not beat out the guy (John David Booty) ahead of him. Sanchez couldn't keep the job either once Booty returned with from a broken finger.

Here is an old post I had about Williams...

If Ryan wins the starting spot I see us using the middle of the field more and dinking and dunking. I see defenses putting 8-9 in the box to shut down Duke and force the throw. I don't think Ryan can stretch the field with his arm. It could be a frustrating year against the better X's and O's staffs we face. On D, I just don't know. I have an educated guess, more of the same and that will spell disaster for us fans.

Ryan Williams and his "arm strength." Honestly, I was one of those that thought he had a weak arm and he couldn't throw a tight spiral.

Granted we have seen little ACTUAL game film, here are some throws that stand out...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fETtVD2ue1w

3:47 (Throws it from our 49 to USF 19 and it is a great pass outside to Hurns),

4:43 (throws the ball from our 28/29, to the USF 23 PERFECTLY leading Waters),

4:59 (makes his reads, moves around and hits Coley for the TD)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9dIVLi7QYyI

1:16 (Morris seemed to have trouble running plays like this)

Defenses can stack the box, bring their safeties up and try to play defense in a smaller window. I think Williams can still make 40 yard throws and keep them honest. Ryan Williams, if he can simply make better reads, will have a better year than Morris. We have too many weapons especially at TE. Sandland and Walford will get open.

See...I don't get this leap in logic. If Williams plays great this year, in different situations than last year, with a different supporting cast, with another year of development under his belt...then somehow, that's how he would have played last year in place of Morris?

Guys just aren't the same players from one year to the next. Some get better, some regress, some stay the same. If Williams does well this year, it doesn't automatically mean that he was better than Morris last year. That's a tired line, and just another avenue for someone wanting yet another excuse to bytch about the staff.

What I would be happy to see is Coley giving his QB the power to audible at he line instead of everyone looking to him on the sidelines for the call. To me, that showed that either they didn't trust Morris to react, or Coley just wanted the reigns in his first year calling plays.

Physically, good QB's come in all shapes and sizes so it's hard to tell. What's upstairs is the difference, and the Louisville game will be a great barometer. They are gonna bring the heat and be amped to be playing us on their first weekend in the ACC.

No it doesn't mean that automatically Williams was better, although in this video he looks equally good.
But do you believe M was so superior that he had to play even with a performance affecting injury?

And, like you said some get worse. The video shows that sometimes it happens even in the same season. There's video that shows Morris panicking under the same kind of pass rush Williams (see 5 min.) came under in this game. (maybe some of you guys who are good at this kind of thing can post it)

I'm not looking for reasons to bytch about the staff, although the collapse last year would indicate it's justified.

Because there were a lot of times this year that Morris was flat out awful, limping around to boot. Sure Williams can progress through another offseason and become a starter, but if he's effective in 2014 it likely means he would have been effective in 2013. Maybe not as much, but still productive. In any event, he would have been a solid alternative to Morris with his injured and erratic play. Additionally, Williams had another year of development ahead of him so if they had played him over a struggling Morris then that development could help the team this season.

All in all, the coaches talk a lot about competition but that talk does not seem to apply to the QB position.

People seem to only think of when he played a garbage usf and savanna state but I really can't judge some one off of that crap show of teams

Statue with a noodle arm.

I remember 12 years ago when we had another statue with a noodle arm who wore #11

Man if that's your expectations for Williams, you will be disappointed... That's so unfair to the kid... He doesn't have the supporting cast and if he was Dorsey he would have played this year... Loyalty doesn't keep Dorsey on the bench... I was young when Kenny Kelly was qb but he was such a freak athlete that you took your chances with him due to his big play potential... However, Dorsey skills and intelligence trumped his big play potential... Williams has been here for 3 years and he hasn't been mentioned at all as the best qb, let alone Dorsey...

So unfair to the kid... Why can't he be the next Scot Covington... A solid game manager...
