How Do We Fix This?

I remember when this board was adamant that you don’t build a sustained winner through the portal and it’s not the answer to any problems. Merely a way to plug a few holes. Now look at us…

QB1 is Mateer and QB2 is Ward and we aren't even counting all of Mateer's running ability or the fact that he plays with much worse talent.

Ward is awesome and will be really difficult to replace, but we finally get great quarterback play and we act like it is impossible to replicate.

Just take some deep breaths, it will be okay.
I think I just had a stroke trying to read this

1. Changes to the defensive staff - I am probably an advocate for getting rid of everyone (except maybe Jason Taylor, but only because of his recruiting chops). Florida State ended up firing both coordinators less than 12 months after their undefeated regular season and the complacency killed them. Too many talented options to run it back. Do NOT ******* bring me a bunch of unproven G5 guys either. Let's outbid Florida State for Brad White or someone who has proven success at the highest levels.

2. Address DB - This is way easier said than done because the portal is fickle, but this unit is woefully undermanned. Start by throwing a bag at Pickett or Hanks (also easier said than done). But then nail the portal. Spend for hopefully two premier veterans and then budget to bring in at least two more contributors. The options from the last few seasons do NOT make me confident, but they need to evaluate perfectly and then throw bodies at the problem.

3. Address QB - With no guarantee that this defense is going to be better next season, you absolutely cannot bank on Poffenbarger or Williams being the solution. The only reason I put this below DB is because I think they can make an ACC Championship game with an improved defense and someone like John Mateer (my first choice) running the offense. There will be solid to above-average options and hopefully the OL and RB situation is enticing.

4. Address LB - There is a lot more depth in the portal at this position. Bissainthe probably counts as slightly above-average, Pruitt and Washington are still worth holding onto and Popo is trustworthy (I guess). I get that it is hard to add physicality AND sideline to sideline speed, but NFL linebackers can do both.

5. Address WR - This is the easiest position to find talent in the portal in my opinion but we can't level down at quarterback and then lean on a bunch of totally unproven youngsters at WR, I don't care how talented they are. Miami can be a little bit pickier here, but I would be fine with two veteran guys, one who admirably fill X's shoes in the slot would be preferable.

6. Address Coaching Blind Spots - Okay fine, this will never happen, but we commit so many penalties and make so many mistakes with timeouts and are generally just terrible with clock management (they took so much time going down the field to kick the field goal that Syracuse only needed two first downs to win). I get that this isn't exactly new information when it comes to Mario, but how many times do we have to watch it happen before even he adapts? I am not as big a Mario hater as others in these forums, but if you want the No. 1 reason why I still don't trust that he can ever win a national championship, it is because he does none of the smart little things and I think that is reflected in the consistent penalty yardage issues.

Mateer is probably going to oklahoma

Simple answer.....

We don't. Mario has to. He was paid a **** ton of money to figure it out.

I just know he's in for a world of hurt next year if he doesn't figure out the QB situation. That statement would have been just as true this season if NIL wasn't in place and Cam decided he was pro ready.

You started this thread and yet act like nothing is wrong. Perhaps that should help you see the problem.
I started a thread called How To Fix This, named 6 things and "act like nothing is wrong"?

I just don't act like the sky is falling after we won 10 games for the second time in 20 years.

There is plenty to fix and I am not at all sold on Cristobal. But pretending that this is a complete rebuild is nonsense. We just finished the season with the best offense in the entire country and as convenient as it is to give Cristobal no credit, he probably deserves at least some kudos.

Am I satisfied with the progress? **** no. But we played games that mattered at the end of the season at that feels a whole lot better than the last 6 years of Hurricanes Football.

Warmer....all those pts you made in op spells rebuild.

Safety is the most Important position on any defense. They can impact both run and pass defense. We lost James and Kam this year. James was a stud in the run and Kam was a stud in pass defense. We rolled out the guy who lost Washington the national championship last year, played Harris who wasn't ready and Patterson whose body just wasn't up to the task. I hope both are motivated after this year and become playmakers next year. I have seen it before. JJ started four freshman in the secondary and by their senior year they were elite and won him a natty. But obviously it takes time for young bodies to grow into men.

Idk, I'm not completely out and I'll tell you why.

Pre-season, 90% of ppl said 10 wins is the prediction and for the most part the expected win total. Fact of the matter, the roster is not built. It took Kirby multiple years to build his roster top to bottom.

Mario did show something this season that nobody expected. He adapted away from his caveman offense. To me, that was always the biggest hindrance he had. With that corrected, we had the #1 offense in the country.

Now, things we need:

1. We NEED to continue to stack top 8 classes. Idc how, we need to finish strong this next week and get into top 8. Otherwise, were not on the Kirby track.

2. Guidry, yea he needs to go. I just can't get on board with the continously dropping a DE into coverage, being out leveraged, and stunting all the time. We also seem to not allow Dline penetrate bc idk how this dline didn't create more havoc this season.

3. We don't need another Cam. Would be nice, but Dawson has now had two very successful QBs. Clayton Tune and Cam. One is a first round pick and the other not. So the offense can put up points. No where I dont understand him, is why we don't run outside. We did it once last game (and i think all season), and it looked great. I dont understand why that isn't more a part of the offense.

4. There's more but I need to go
Thank you for not having the doomsday outlook. There’s rumblings about the class not ending well but time and time again I will trust Mario with the one thing he’s elite at, recruiting. People are saying money is drying up? Why? Mario has hit the mark on what he said. Year 3 and we had great success but fell short of our adjusted expectations. Roster is getting more talented every year. We’re trending up, why would anyone not invest now?

Rationality isn’t allowed on this board. I agree with everything you said. Am I sold that Cristobal will win us the big one? No. But this program has gotten miles better over the past three years. 5 to 7 to 10 wins is progress. Success, also, isn’t always linear. Look the coaches that have done anything in CFB in the last 25 years, and you’ll see that most don’t do anything until years 3-5 of their tenures. Ed O didn’t do **** at LSU until year 4. Saban didn’t do **** at Michigan State or LSU until Year 4. Jim Harbaugh didn’t do **** at Michigan until YEAR 7.

Point is program is on the right track. The question is whether Mario can do enough to overcome his 9-10 win floor.

I hear you brother, and trust me I was not surprised at all yesterday's result nor was I expecting a win. The most shocking part of yesterday was the 21-0 lead.

Whether it's Mario, Manny, richt...it doesn't matter. This is what we do. And until we have superior elite talent like the elites, we will have let downs.

Objectively speaking also, GT would be a ranked team if Haynes King wasn't injured and they lost games during that span and took georgia to 8 OTs. Cuse, I expect will be ranked tommorow. Those aren't horrible teams like losing to a wake or something.

But point being, I agree we cannot let up on recruiting and portal. We need a top 8 class this year and elite portal haul. Miami needs to go into every game with a huge talent advantage.

Ijs very few teams and coaches stay perfect.

Lane blew it against Florida and Kentucky.

Day lost against a ****** Michigan team.

ND lost to freaking NIU.

James Franklin can't beat good teams.

Bama lost 3 games this year.

There is no perfect coach. Saban set a very high standard so I'm not gonna pretend firing Mario and getting a new coach is the fix.

I've seen enough coaches come in and fail to believe any different. We need talent, end of story.

And not a dumb *** DC. That needs to be fixed.
Exactly^^ we know Mario isn’t an elite X and O coach or even a great game day coach. But this fan base thinks 10-2 is not good enough when the teams that have been winning national championships went 10-2 this year or worse

Mario leaving and hiring an elite coach. That's how you fix this. He's not going anywhere for a while so it is what it is. All we can do is sit back and watch a badly coached, undisciplined team with a ceiling of 10 wins depending on the strength of schedule

10-2 is fine if that is going to be the average season, people are mad because we went 10-2 with a Heisman caliber QB and they think it is going back to 7-5 as the average season.

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but Mario’s game day coaching did improve this year from last year. So he’s clearly working on it and the hope is he’ll continue to improve next year as well. But all the things you’re asking for takes money and I’m a canes connection member to help Miami build the roster it needs to win. Are you a canes connection member as well? If not, I would recommend joining to help build this roster to where it needs to be.
