Honest Thoughts on Mario as a Recruiter in the Age of NiL

I understand that...

i'm just saying if he's bringing 2 nfl players in per year then the team, after 3 or 4 years, should have 6 or 8 nfl players on it once those classes are stacked on top of each other...

I think looking at the roster this year, we can clearly/easily see 6-8 nfl players on it..

it's still not good enough but just worth noting the difference...

Your also not factoring in when they would realistically contribute anything to the team. He had two guys from the 2018 class drafted and 2 from 2021. The 2018 guys were gone by the time the 2021 guys signed.

Point is, this few NFL guys over 4 years means maybe 2-3 at most are likley contributors at any one given time. That is dog ****.

I can tell none of you are in any type of sales. Being good at sales is winning deals where you are close or even a little behind what someone else has to offer. There is always a place for that and relationship building no matter how much money gets involved.

The point is that 8 total over 3-4 years while decent isn’t going to win you anything big time.

Mario is not qualified for or good at his job. He’s clearly incompetent. I can’t believe people think that will change with more money or new hires. NIL rendered his one skill relatively meaningless. He should be Lashlee’s offensive line coach, at most.

I posted this in one of the threads on the football board, I'll copy it here as it's relevant to this thread.

Mario has landed numerous 4 and 5 star guys in the 2023 and 2024 classes. Many have failed to contribute. Our overall hit rate has been much lower than what you need to succeed.

Whether this is missed eval's, poor scheme, poor development, a combination...I'm not really sure. But the below is alarming:

C/O 2023 4 and 5 stars

Hits

Francis
Bain
Fletcher

TBD (these guys have flashed in limited PT)
Riley Williams
Malik Bryant
Popo
Damari Brown

No impact (too soon to say bust?)
Samson
Robby Washington
Ray Ray
Robert Stafford
Jayden Wayne (transferred)
Collins Achaempong (transferred)

C/O 2024 4 and 5 stars

Immediate hits

Lyle
Pruitt (criminal he got just 4 snaps vs. Cuse)
Lofton

TBD
Scott
Lightfoot
Blount
Patterson
Trader
Carr
Robinson
Pickett
Jones
Hayes
Rudolph

It's absolutely critical Miami develops this class of 2024. To me, it's just as important as landing a star portal class. What's the point in "stacking talent" if said talent doesn't do anything but disappoint?

In my opinion, is he the best we've had in forever? yes. Is he the best talent evaluator? I'm not sure. We've had some hits. Surprisingly Golden had an eye for underrated talent, but couldn't develop them.

The reality is Mario is probably a tier 2 coach IMO. That's okay as well. I don't think he will ever win a NC. Can he make us relevant again, sure (see this year). He will probably always have us anywhere from 6-15 in recruiting which will be more than enough to be in the playoffs.

He needs to really hit on his coordinators when it comes to X/O's and recruiting.

Asking for “honest” takes on CIS is like asking for snow in Miami.

Anyways fact Mario is an elite recruiter. When money is equal or close enough it favors the person who can build relationships.

What it can’t fix:

-Lack of gameday atmosphere
-Lack of big time games due to overall conference
-A desperate team willing to pay way above market value for the same kid.

Claiming that great recruiters are “nullified” due to NIL is hyperbole.

This happens in the “real world” all the time we ppl have multiple job offers in the same salary range it comes down to the relationships and other intangibles.

My mind is going crazy with how many things may be wrong and where college football may be heading. I'm gonna try and organize this.

1. Mario needs to evaluate players, idk if he has his own people doing it but idk how the process is for UM. Maybe someone can answer that.

2. Mario needs to surround himself with elite coordinators. The way college football is going with the talent being spread out, i think coaching will become the most important skill to have. Coaches will no longer be able to just stack the roster with elite talent and outplay your opponent just because you know you have better talent. If Mario hasn't caught up to this idea, he's behind the curve.

3. Mario needs to stop recruiting the way he is. Stop recruiting one position a year. You gotta recruit everyone or you'll get what just happened this year on defense. This goes back to talent evaluation, if he changes to this philosophy, you better have good evaluation bc you no longer throwing **** at the wall and hope a couple of recruits are elite.

4. Someone in that staff has to have an eye for speed. Get the best players on your board and rank their speed.

5. Stop playing favorites and play your explosive guys. Lots of players on defense can't afford to make a mistake bc they can't make it up with their speed.

I apologize if it's all over the place. I am busy today so can't fully organize it the way I want.

It’s time to be a better evaluator than recruiter or we’re going to left behind.

There is no room for us to whiff and keep pace with the top 5-8 NIL programs
Honestly I’d be happy with more coaches who are obsessed with the game… get people from that ravens, 49ers, Texans, and KC coaching staff who are around innovation and pushing what you have to their limits

Tired of excuses.. we’re never going to field a 01 field team ever again it shouldn’t limit us from being in national champs or even just conference champs

it’s not that simple. I was in the same boat saying Zaquan more at safety and others have pointed out he was way out of position a lot vs GT. So just playing your explosive guys isn’t the answer. They need to know assignments as well, that’s how football works.

I know that's how football works but I am sure you saw our defense was out of position every play.

It must be painful to get beat by UM and the GAYtos in the same year.

100% agree that eval skill is more valuable than recruiting skill right now. Seems like an obvious use of “analyst” roles, but CEO has to make final calls.

Cristobal is proven as a recruiter (relating to teenagers, effort, etc.). Eval skills are TBD, but I see more good signs than bad.

One example: 2nd best portal QB was Will Howard. We pass and wait out Cam Ward. If we settled for the sure sign in Howard, what would this season look like right now? I would call that a good eval.
