Here is the Question now..

didn't see this thread. asked this on the ray ray thread, but i'll ask here since it's more appropriate given the convo:

two quick questions:
1) with ray ray out of the picture, how do you see the snaps being divided among vt, highsmith, rodgers, bush and jenkins?
2) if bush and/or jenkins get significant playing time AND play well, will this negatively impact our chances with carter or burns?

My understanding is that Jenkins will be starting at WR.

Did not know that. I'd rather see him at safety.

I agree as well, this was before RRA getting the boot though, things may have chnaged. From what I remember the coaches likes Jenkins with the ball in his hands.

Yall don't understand.. that was more than a bad play thats just bad plain horrible instincts....I know 7th graders who wouldve made a play on that ball. I wouldve took anything.. wide open dropped interception, a trip and fall, a pass interference, but to just stand and watch? That **** worries me way too much..I cant have guys like that on my team starting. If he starts we weill see that play many more times

I gotta agree.

That wasn't even some complicated read or anything. He just stood there and watched the completion happen. I can understand making an aggressive error by chasing the ball or trying to read the QB's eyes, but how do you just watch a completion happen?

Yep. That was a football play. There was no thinking involved. Any talented player absolutely crushes that dolt in the end zone.

Rogers literally looked like he had never played football before on that play.

Personally, I'd love to see what Gunter has in him. Rogers, Highsmith and whoever else we put back there outside of the freshman are just JAGs.

The problem is that the FR might just end up being JAGS themselves. Its a problem with no real solution except prayer.

I'm sure he's replayed that one incident a thousand times over in his mind.

He won't let that happen again.

I think he'll do a good job for us.
It amazes me how some of our fans are trying to downplay that awful play by Rodgers. If it had been a LB I could make an excuse for him but he's a free safety and his reaction on that play made it clear he has no bness ever starting at FS for miami. The guy showed he has no instints to play the possition.

Ed Reed gave up the game winner vs PSU, he turned out all right.

Now not saying Rodgers is Reed but players make bad plays all the time. The kid should be a RS So. As D$ said he is transitioning from corner and looks to have put the work in off the field by his noticeable increase in size. I'm not ready to give up on him and think he will do a nice job for us this year.

Where I come off is that Rodgers may have had a bad play but what did Highsmith (or Bush for that matter) do that's any good? Who's to say that Highsmith wouldn't have done the same? Rodgers making a bad play doesn't mean that Highsmith is any good.

Rodgers (and others) have an advantage over Bush in that they have at least played in this system. I feel like a week ago I was reading a thread telling me that Bush couldn't even play safety in high school now people want him to be our safety. None of the safeties have proven anything and maybe it'll be a rotating model. Rodgers would seem to have the best combination of physical prowess and experience which is his advantage, but I wouldn't be surprised to see anybody back there and I doubt one guy will lock this spot down especially early on. The truth is that we haven't had one safety lock down a spot since Meriweather and Phillips were around.

You are right on everything, we will be a safety by commitee. We will have different line ups at safety throughout the season, that cant be a good thing right? pretty much we are ***ced at safety unless one of these freshman show something in August. I dont like Deon Bush at all at safety, especially free safety. He is a far better corner. RIght now im just hoping for someone that can make a tackle in the open field. But as far as a guy roaming back their reading the qb and making a play on the ball....not holding my breath

Is this post for real? Horrible analogy brother

There is absolutely, positively, without-a-shadow-of-a-doubt, NO comparision between those 2 plays. Go back and re-watch that play and you'll see we blitzed on that play. Reed wasn't guilty of bad instincts or even being out of position....one of the other guys in the pattern threatened the deep part of the field and he was caught in no man's land. Want to assign blame to someone on that play? Blame Butch, the DC, or whatever combination of coaches decided to blitz on that play and leave Reed to basically cover 2 guys.

What Kacy Rodgers did....was an abomination. One of the most embarassing displays of natural instincts (or lack thereof) that I've witnessed in 30 years of watching football. This "he won't let it happen again" stuff isn't reality. Reality is he is a below average player that on a normal Canes team, wouldn't be on the team in the first place.

Of course it wasn't a direct comparison. The point being that young players make mistakes/get beat. Dorsey look awful vs VT, Graham vs VT, Hank had stone hands, Moss had a hands issue. IMO to write off a young player seeing his 1st playing time at S is crazy. The play was awful no doubt but doesn't mean he's going to have an awful career.

Well then we'll agree to disagree......I'm of the opinion that instincts don't get better. You're either born with them or you're not. I'm not talking about the normal growing pains, mental mistakes, etc. What Rodgers displayed on that play was a total inability to react to a poorly thrown ball that hung in the air for about 27 seconds. He didn't have primary coverage responsibility either...which is the worst part since he was basically playing centerfield.

Like I said before I'd be downright shocked if he even ended up being a decent full time player. As someone else mentioned earlier in this thread that wouldn't have happened to most decent high school safeties....let alone a division 1 player.

Really hope Gunter gets a shot back there.
