Heaps and Wyche

How the **** do some of you negative people think we got to 9 wins? The coaches suck, the D sucks, the QB regressed, Duke was hurt. The **** got us those 9 wins? SOMEBODY is doing something right, so who? I'm legitimately curious.

Project,

I'll just say that UM only beat 3 teams with a winning record last season.

UNC 7-6
Pitt 7-6
Georgia Tech 7-6

Our schedule last season was not murderers row by any stretch of the imagination.

There is no way in **** we should be giving up 500 plus yards per game and we did that in like 5 or 6 games last season.

I'm optimistic about the season but I am also in "wait and see mode."

Anyone care to name guys who transfer from two different schools that actually do anything at their 3rd school?

Anyone care to name the last JUCO DT that has come to UM and done anything in year 1?

It takes time for these guys to get used to D1 speed and strength.

The problem is and will remain a brutal scheme that does not fit the UM mold.

We need to be an aggressive defense regardless if we play a 4-3 3-4 5-2 (whatever).

This read and react, bend but don't break, play your DB's 10 yards off the receivers while playing pattycake at the LOS is not what a UM defense does.

Just sayin

Great post! I totally agree about the need to be aggressive on the defensive side of the ball. If you couple that with an offense that is able to convert some third downs and sustain a drive than we could compete with anybody I feel.

  1. Cam Newton: University of Florida & Blinn College before wining the Heisman at Auburn University
  2. Tom Savage: Rutgers University & Arizona before Pittsburgh. 238 completions of 389 attempts, 61.2 %, 21 TD's, 9 INT's, and 138.2 QB rating. Drafted in the 4th round by the Houston Texans
  3. Colt Brennan: Colorado & Saddleback College before University of Hawaii. Broke multiple records and was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2007

I agree about the defense BUT as we are finding out now, we had too many JAGS getting WAY too much playing time on that D. So I am interested to see what happens when we actually have guys with legit raw talent working in this scheme.

Honestly I cant think of many JUCO DTs we have taken in the last 15 years period..Besides Darius Smith. So that is kind of a moot point.

I agree that it takes JUCO guys time though. Look at Lavon Hooks at Ole Miss. Buddy was a deer in headlights last year and we thought he would come here and singlehandidly save our D in his first year. BUT with that said, Al Golden doesnt have time. So we need Wyche and Hertolou to be ready. They dont have to be Cortez Kennedy and Vince Wilfork..**** they can be Mark Ceaser and Delwyn Jones for all I care and that would get us 10 wins. Is that too much to ask?

I agree we need to be more aggressive BUT I am not sure if Dno was doing that to save our CBs from getting exposed because of their inexperience. At this point though the training wheels need to come off. Gunter is a SR, Howard/Crawford are JRs, and Burns/Elder are true SOPHs.. time for these guys to show up or move to the side.

Like this post. mark Ceasar type of play is all me need.

This is what blows my mind too. You would think a
  • 9 win team
  • A upgrade in talent at multiple positions
  • Better overall depth
  • More experience
  • Veteran Team (8 upperclassman starting on Offense & 9 upperclassman starters on defense)
  • Not having to rely on true freshman
  • No Highsmith, Rodgers, Green, or Gaines starting on defense
  • Duke Johnson healthy
  • 7 returning starters on offense
  • 8 returning starters on defense
  • 2 JUCO DT's added
  • Top 15 recruiting class
  • No more NCAA cloud
  • Full coaching staff returning

That list seems to me to be something to be excited about

To add to this.

  • Return of Phillip Dorsett (His ability to stretch the field deep prevented teams from stacking the box. Also if he was healthy against VT there is no way true freshman Artie Burns would have been returning kicks, that resulted in a huge momentum swinging fumble.)
  • A fully healthy Malcolm Lewis

Lets look at the 4 L's from last season

Florida State and Louisville were just better football teams from top to bottom, I can accept those two.

VT 42-24 Miami rushed for a grand total of 28 yards. There is no way anyone can tell me that with a healthy Duke Johnson that the outcome of this game is not different. FSU had a much better defense than VT and Duke had 97 yards and 4.2 per attempt before he was injured against them. The normal 100 yards rushing from Duke and this is a totally different ball game. Also again sure handed Dorsett would not have fumbled the kick off return.

Duke 48-30 Miami go into this game without Duke Johnson, Phillip Dorsett, and Stacy Coley (was knocked out of the game). This team was only down by 1 point going into the 4th, those 3 guys would have made this a totally different game.

I believe with a healthy Duke and Dorsett last season could have easily been a 11-2 or 12-1 team.

this about covers it. i would add that when we lose, we get curb stomped. it is unacceptable.

the Duke, VT, UL, and even the FSU game are completely unacceptable. then the games we do win (against very mediocre teams) are dog fights where the defense gets embarrassed and the offense bails us out.

this is a ****** coaching staff. it is obvious

We're gunna play all those coastal teams again this year, our schedule isn't dramatically different then it was last year or the year before that. Our season still hinges on the same 3 or 4 games as always so the schedule thing is a moot point.

There's more to a football team then the stats and **** that fans have access to. The culture is changing, the wins have been trending upward, we got beyond the ncaa cloud in **** good shape. That's all a credit to Golden and his staff. At the end of the day the program is MUCH better off now then it was when golden first showed up. I mean think about it, we're essentially a new DC away from having the talent and culture to sustain 10+ win seasons. That's a mighty fine job by my standards and plenty of reason to be excited.

Games are played on both sides of the ball. A healthy Duke and Dorsett improve the chances of moving the ball and keeping the defense off the field or scoring points and changing the complexion of the game.

The defense being poor is not news, but thanks for beating that drum in every thread.

Where do people get the coming out flat idea?

The players did not come out flat against VT or Louisville. Did we lose both games? - Yes, and they may have eventually broke down, but the players did not come out flat.

I do believe those offensive guys have a impact on the game.
1. If Miami is playing with a lead, teams can not run the same type of offense they would normally run.
2. Running the ball well results in better ball control and clock management. This will keep the defense on the sideline and allow them to play fresh.

I understand that the defense sucked beyond belief, but there were several guys in the 2 deep last season that were simply not BCS caliber players. I truly believe that with better players we will see a totally different defense this season.

We better see a totally different defense this season. The past three years we looked like we were lubed up for every rooting we got.

The past three years, we've had more three and outs than international law allows, and it didn't matter if Duke was injured or not.

What we didn't have was in-game adjustments, and teams would burn us on the same, identical play twenty times.

I'm sick and tired of the incompetence on both sides of the ball.

Of course you truly believe that. But of course you're also discounting the fact that we are going to be starting kids who couldn't beat out the likes of Shayon Greene and Kacy Rodgers.

Second, this defense has sucked ever since Shannon's leftovers started leaving the team. No matter who is on offense. What you're saying sounds nice in theory, but Miami was not a ball control team. Miami was a quick-strike offense in 2013. According to this article, UM's average scoring drive was 2:16. That was before the Duke and Dorsett injuries. So having Duke and Dorsett isn't going to keep other teams off the field. They were both big-play guys. Having them was going to put the other team right on the field.

Third, the type of offense they would normally run does not matter because if teams have to come back from a deficit, they would just play a hurry up, pass oriented offense. Miami had the 92nd ranked pass offense in the country. http://www.cfbstats.com/2013/leader/national/team/defense/split01/category02/sort01.html

So forcing teams to pass more is not good news. In fact, it's even worse.
