The 2 spots that could make or break this season, QB & DT, could be getting huge upgrades or major disappointments. I for one believe that Heaps and Wyche will be upgrades and if so the sky is the limit for the football team. This will be a 10 or 11 win team if those two guys could some how perform at a All ACC level.

Can Heaps live up to his #1 QB ranking now that he is surrounded with talent?

Can Wyche be the dominate force in the middle that we all think he can be?

Looking at the overall talent and depth on this team, with solid QB & DT play Miami could shock the world.

QB Jake Heaps RSR (4*) Kevin Olsen RFR (4*) or Brad Kaaya FR (4*)
HB Duke Johnson JR (5*) Gus Edwards SO (3*) or Joseph Yearby FR (4*)
FB Walter Tucker SO (Not ranked but 4.4 SPEED)
WR Stacy Coley SO (4*) Herb Waters JR (4*)
WR Phillip Dorsett SR (4*) Malcolm Lewis RSO (4*)
TE Clive Walford RSR (3*) Standish Dobard SO (4*) or Beau Sandland SR (4*)
OT Ereck Flowers JR (4*) Kc McDermott FR (4*)
OG Johnathan Feliciano RSR (3*) Trevor Darling FR (4*)
C Shane McDermott RSR (3*) Alex Gall SO (3*)
OG Danny Isidora RSO (4*) Hunter Wells RJR (2*)
OT Taylor Gadbois RSO (3*) Sunny Odogwu RFR (3*)

WDE Tyriq McCord JR (4*) Al-Quadin Muhammad SO (4*)
DT Olsen Pierre SR (3*) Jelani Hamilton JR (4*)
NT Michael Wyche JR (4*) Calvin Heurtelou JR (3*)
SDE Anthony Chickillo SR (5*) Ufomba Kamalu RJR (3*) or Chad Thomas FR (5*)
WILL Raphael Kirby JR (4*) Jermaine Grace SO (4*)
MLB Denzel Perryman SR (3*) JaWand Blue RSO (3*)
SAM Alex Figueroa SO (3*) Thurston Armbrister SR (2*) or Darrion Owens FR (4*)
CB Tracy Howard JR (5*) Corn Elder SO (4*) or Antonio Crawford JR (3*)
FS Deon Bush JR (4*) Dallas Crawford RJR (4*)
SS Jamal Carter SO (4*) Rayshawn Jenkins JR (3*)
CB Artie Burns (4*) Ladarius Gunter RSR (3*)

This is a veteran team that is loaded with talent. If Al can't win with these guys he can't win with anyone.

I would take a guy that completes 60% of his passes, moves the ball and doesn't throw INTs. Get the ball to Coley, the TEs and the rest of the playmakers.

IMO.. I think whoever starts this year will be better than Morris at running the offense. Morris won 9 games last year. 6 of 13 games we didn't have Duke. All the jags are gone. How could I not be optimistic?

Outside of Flowers, that OL is a little scary to me. Hopefully some of the guys who have been in reserve roles the last year or two step up in a big way.

LB play is more important to the defense than DT play, IMO.

Heaps has never had the kind of game breaking talent to throw and hand off to this year in his career.

2014 will be interesting, no doubt.

Doesn't take a whole lot to upgrade our DT play, bar is very low. At QB, we have actual choices, if staff will pull the trigger should the starter ends up stinking it up. If Heaps or Williams falter, I want to see Olsen. If he chumps out then put Kaaya. If he is not what we hope, then let's see the kid from Bama(I believe the last 3 NC QBs actually came from that state). If one, just one of our QBs can catch fire, this team can take off. Put a decent QB on the field in Tally last year in 2nd half and we had those suckers--bad defense and all. If Al just sticks with a senior QB again, I will lead the lynch mob.

Unlike other years, most of the high rated players on that list have actually played extremely well. It not full of disappointments and underachievers. Staff needs to measure up to the likes of Duke, DP, Coley, Flowers and impress with their coaching, game plan and calls. These kids deserve better than they got last year. Man up coaches!!!!!!

Johnathan Feliciano and Shane are both studs. I think this offensive line is a lot more talented than last years line.

Feliciano is. Shane is average at best. Wheeler should have gotten more PT over him last season.

And you gotta be kidding me with that last line.

thats the biggest negative to heaps. he has thrown quite a few picks. i haven't seen any of them but this has to be at least a partial reflection of his decision making. he has 20 starts so that is a positive compared to our other qbs.

Shane has played through serious injuries the last 2 seasons. If he is healthy this year, he should be very good.

Using stars is information I like seeing but now that they are in college I would bucket the starters the following way:

All-Americans (start anywhere): Coley, Duke, Flowers

Top 15 guys (would start at a top 15 program unless there is an all-american in front of them): Dorsett, Feliciano, Isidora, Perryman, Howard, Bush

High potential guys (physical capabilities to be a top 15 guy or even all-american, but no proven track-record): Heaps, Tucker, Gadbois, Walford, McCord, Pierre, Wyche, Kirby, Figs, Carter, Burns

Lunch-pail guys (hard workers with limited physical capabilities): Chickillo, McDermott

Feel free to disagree with where I have people slotted. The point is, the mix isn't quite there (we need more high-potentials to end up in the top 15 or all-american bucket to be successful), but it is getting **** close. When Chickillo and McDermott are your lunch pail guys, we are headed in the right direction, and as I look down the roster, we have some defensive all-americans waiting in the wings.

Big question for me is going to be where the depth comes from. Need someone (Gall, Isidora, Gadbois) to step up into the Jared Wheeler role and one of the two stud frosh to be able to help out this year. If that happens, we should be fine.

I'm hesitant to be enthused. Heap and Wyche have two months to get it together. Can they be coached up in time?
Whipping loserville is a must.

You can't rely on a highly rated Juco to anchor your defense, just like we couldn't rely on Sandland to be our difference maker at TE last year. But I do think Wyche and Heurtelou have more promise, certainly than Porter and Robinson. Heurtelou played like our best DT in the Spring after only a few weeks on campus. Wyche is still an unknown.

To me, it's all about the pass rush this year. The NTs need to hold the center, but we need to get to those QBs more quickly. That will cause more turnovers and drive down our terrible performance on third down. I'm expecting/hoping for a huge improvement from McCord and AQM.

Terrance Cody stepped into Bama and was an All-American for two years. Wyche isn't asked to do a lot playing the nose. It can be done.

I like the optimism but you never want to pin your season's hopes on a 5th-year QB transfer and JC DT transfer.

Then there's D'Nofrio, who could turn Tim Howard into Tony Meola overnight.

Shane is a liability, unfortunately. Yeah the injury excuse, but he wasn't any good when he was healthy either. We need Gall to develop quickly or we will have to support Shane all season.

as far as the OP, I really don't expect much from either to be honest. Just because Wyche is JUCO doesn't mean he will be ready right away. I think he will be solid eventually. Heaps.....meh.
