Head Coach Candidates

Don't think it'd be an issue to have Jack McClinton on the staff as a GA or DOBO. Those are usually the spots for guys looking to break in to the college basketball coaching world. I think the 3 top assistant coaching spots on staff should go to people with experience and/or with connections to elite players. Something I don't think Jack has at this point.

He's a Baltimore native and if he still has connections there, he could be useful. Bmore being a premier urban hoops hotbed. Can GAs recruit?

Officially, GA's are allowed to go on the road and actively recruit, but more times than not it's left up to the HC what roles a particular GA would fill. Usually, off campus recruiting is left to the HC and his first three assistants. Roles for GA's vary, but it's likely they're relegated to mostly on campus duties, such as, working out players, breaking down film, scouting, etc. When it comes to recruiting they're usually asked to stay in house and help with on campus visits and to stay in contact with their people and recruit kids they have ins with.

Don't hate it, but prefer somebody with HC experience
Agree, 1,000%!!! Miami isn't serious about basketball if it hires a lifelong assistant with no head coaching experience to be their next head coach. Like c'mon!! I know we're all speculating on who the next HC will be, but at the very least let's try to be somewhat realistic with the names being thrown around. At the rate we're going, it's only a matter of time before some of y'all start throwing out high school coaches as possible candidates. GO CANES!!!

Jai Lucas, Duke Associate HC and Recruiting Coordinator would be at the top of my list. Has worked for Rick Barnes, Shaka Smart and was Calipari's recruiting coordinator at Kentucky. Lead recruiter for the Boozers. At 36, is primed for his first HC role.

I am not going to beat you up about the idea. You are correct from this aspect, Jail Lucas is a good recruiter but the schools that he has been pretty much recruit themselves.
In fairness and I could be wrong but I don't think Jon Scheyer is an elite coach nor an elite recruiter, I think being at Duke is a huge benefit for him.
Largely because no one else from the Coach L tree has come close to duplicating the success they had at Duke. The most successful are still Tommy Amaker and Johnny Dawkins. Take that for what it is.
I agree with you that a younger HC who is a good recruiter is very important. I definitely don't want someone who is close to retirement to be the next HC. That's why I don't want to hear about Anthony Grant, Sean Miller nor Frank Martin.

Sean Miller is 56, is that really HC retirement age?
iirc Dawkins gave Duke a good scare in the tourney as UCF HC with his son & Taco Fall. Those 2 dominated Duke that day but the Dookies prevailed.

Honestly, yes.
It's too close to 70, which is definitely the age a HC needs to retire. That is what we have learned in the last 5 years.
Sure, Tony Bennett was 55 and he got burned out at UVA.
Miller has been mediocre at Xavier in his second time around. Without Book Richardson and money that no one else is paying, he is an average coach.

A few other names to throw on the radar:

Ryan Odom (VCU) - was an assistant at Va Tech for many years and has taken Utah State and UMBC to the tournament - including knocking off UVA in 2018. Could also end up being in the mix for the UVA job.

Ben McCollum (Drake) - Meteoric rise after being an uber-successful coach in D-2. Someone at a big program is going to give him a look.

Richard Pitino (New Mexico) - Pretty obvious ties to Miami given the one year at FIU. Took Minnesota to two tourneys and a NIT title in 8 years. Has quietly done a really good job at New Mexico.

Bryce Drew (Grand Canyon) - 3 tournaments in 5 years at GCU, including a 30 win campaign last year.
I worked with Richard at FIU while going to school there. Let me tell you, one of the biggest ******** to his players ove ever seen 🤣

Good coach though. I would love to see the Pitino family full court press here at Miami. The offensive system is eh. Idk what he did at Minnesota, but he recruited at an amazing level here at FIU while he was here. Left good pieces for the next coach too.

New Mexico is getting top 25 votes.

They were a solid team last year, too. Rich is a good choice for Miami.

I think he was someone that probably needed a little more seasoning before landing the Minnesota job.

His biggest issue was that there wasn't much of a connection between Pitino and the local Minnesota basketball scene, and whatever had developed the first couple years of his tenure there was pretty much ruined when he prioritized Isaiah Washington at PG over the local PG option in McKinley Wright in 2017, who was very popular locally, especially in the AAU scene. That only became magnified when his assistant Ben Johnson (from Minneapolis, now the Gophers head coach) left for Xavier after 2018.

While he had a good local class in 2018 (and this was mostly with Johnson as the point man for this), he didn't get anyone in the classes of 2019 or 2020 in-state (and both were strong classes for Minnesota high school standards), and that just fed into the discontent locally. And aside from Jamal Mashburn Jr., none of the guys he brought in with those classes were contributors.

He was a stronger transfer portal recruiter late in his tenure than he was with high school players.

I can definitely see him as someone who wears out his welcome fast if he doesn't win. That personality is not easy lol.

But he is smart. Knows bball.
