Head Coach Candidates

Buzz is a darn good coach… but not a great coach. IU has all the basketball support and resources in the world and somehow can’t seem to figure out the difference between a meh coach, a good coach and a great coach.

Since they have Big 10 money as a basketball school, Indiana should pay Dusty May whatever it takes. Thats a big boy move. But Buzz will keep them relevant and regularly in the second weekend of March.
Why would Dusty leave MICHIGAN after one year to go to IU? Michigan is a far better program at this point, and you don't have to deal with IU boosters, who still d**kride Bobby Knight at every turn and are extremely toxic? Nah, that's a no from me. IU is like UCLA, the difference is that IU still thinks Bobby is coming back, and UCLA has finally come to the realization that a once in a lifetime run is exactly that.

I’m not saying he would. I’m just saying if I were them I would take the shot. Almost unbelievable how good he is.

The difference between IU and UCLA is passion. Basketball is IU’s entire identity. Their basketball NIL is still top 5-10 despite years of irrelevance. People still care there, deeply.

Look I’m no bob knight fan… nor am I an Indiana fan… but a good basketball coach can win at IU, and with that sweet Big 10 money (and their ambivalence toward football) they can overpay for a basketball staff.

Anyway, this is all irrelevant to Canes hoops.

I’m still down with Caputo since his strengths align with what we need to build a program and he’s made a wallowing GW program legitimately competitive in the A10 in 3 years (and after losing their best player to injury before the season started this year).

Buzz is an average coach.
18 years coaching at Marquette, VA Tech and Texas A&M.
He has won 1 Conference regular season and no conference tournament championships.
Further more, he has 10 NCAA tournament appearances with an 11-10 record.
Nice guy but I don't know what the BUZZ is about?

Basketball may be IU's entire identity, but they haven't been consistently relevant in almost three decades, they haven't won a national title in 38 years, they haven't been to a Final Four in well over two decades. Did I mention that Miami has made more Sweet 16 appearances since 2010 than IU? The results haven't been there for years. The money is there, just like the money is there for UCLA(Don't get it twisted, there are some huge institutional donors in Westwood, the issue is that they haven't hit on a coach).

Money alone can't get it done(it does help though), you need structure, you either need a coach strong enough to tell the boosters to mind their business(Like Saban did at Bama), or you need a guy that is a great politician that can keep the hounds at bay(Mack Brown at Texas, Jim Tressel at Ohio State). You also need boosters that aren't toxic and stand in the way of progress.

Should IU reach out to **** near any coach they can? Yes, but I think that people of a certain age overrate the IU job, like they overrated the Alabama job pre Saban. Some of these jobs sound a lot better than what they truly are.

That’s all very fair and accurate.

My only slight disagreement is that I believe IU still fills up the gym (as compared to UCLA) even through their decades long stretch of mediocrity. It’s not essential (see L’s success at Miami), but I do think it makes program building easier.

A good friend is an IU grad and fan… it was astonishing to me to learn of their NIL $$ driven by small dollar fan engagement.

And I totally agree Michigan is a better job… just chiming in that IU keeps throwing away money so if they’re going to light money on fire they should at least try to go after a truly elite coach in the process.

And the only reason they would even have a moon shot of a chance is that Dusty is an alum. Michigan is paying him 3.75 mm… Indiana could afford to offer him a lot more and then Michigan would have to to decide if it’s worth it to fight that bidding war.

UCLA is similar to Miami in the fact that they are schools located in major metropolitan areas. Bloomington is a different world, even if IU basketball is TERRIBLE, people will support it, because that's the only game in town. If UCLA basketball isn't compelling, there are other options available. Dusty being an alum is a big deal, it may get them a meeting, but I don't know if he's going to leave Michigan, who offers just as much financially as IU, and you don't have as many crazies to navigate.

I wouldn't be shocked if May leverages IU for a fat, fat raise from Michigan. If he wanted to hold out for IU, he would have not taken the Michigan job, he could have stayed at FAU and gotten another solid tournament run. Woodson has been on the hotseat for a minute.
