Don't forget Golden is a pzzy...
When you look at the names on this senior class, they are much better than what we have had the last 2 years as seniors for sure.
But they are still nowhere near what a Miami senior class is supposed to look like... Specially on defense.
The junior class "looks" like a Miami class as do the sophomore and freshman classes.
This is the class Golden pieced together, his first "real" class will be Seniors next year.
This, it's unfair to call this his first senior class.
And they weren't playing teams like Virginia and Pitt. Those Pac 12 offenses are no joke. Over half their teams are in the top 40 in total offense plus the meat grinders that are Stanford. Us? Nope. We give up 360 yards to Wake Forest, who averaged like 290 YPG and finished ranked 118 out of 123
Your post prompted me to throw this together. It's a chart that shows Miami's opponents offensive numbers vs what they did against us. I removed the FAU and Savannah State games. We only managed to hold 2 teams below their season average. And one of those two was against FSU who we still allowed 500+ yards against and only 2 yards below their season average.
but what was our offenses 3rd down coversion %? probably cut some of those yards if they coulda stayed on the field

Overplayed excuse. USC, TCU, USF and VT were all worse than us on 3rd down offensively but still managed to put up top 25 defenses last year. UF was also very bad on 3rd down but still finished 8th in total defense.

I'm being lenient by calling this his first true senior class. He had 3 years to get anything out of the 2013 seniors. Granted, he extracted an astonishing amount out of walking corpses like Shayon and Gaines and Rodgers, but enough of the ****ing hand holding.
Either he wins the Coastal in 2014 or get him the **** out of my sight.

UF ranked 3rd in Time of Possession at 33:49 per game.
VT 8th @ 33:18
USC 10th @ 33:04
TCU 49th @ 30:23
and then us
Miami ranked 120th at 25:58.
Also for as bad as our defense was, they forced 27 turnovers good for 23rd nationally. More than any of the above teams mentioned except for TCU which forced 28. So they were taking the ball back and giving it the offense. Still our offense couldn't possess the football for at least equally to our opponents.

T.O.P doesn't tell it all. You ever thought those teams had high T.O.P because their defense was able to get off the field even when their offense put them in bad situations. Our defense was shredded whether the opposing team got the ball inside their own 10 or inside our 10. My point still stands, being bad offensively at converting 3rd downs doesn't excuse the **** poor defense.

Nothing really tells it all. Its usually a combinations of things.
But it's not coincidence that the defenses you pointed out had offenses that could to possess the ball and that ultimately helped the defense by keeping them off the field. You can't get yards put on your defense if theyre on the sidelines.

This is 150% Golden's first true senior class at Miami. Those are his guys.
Just like last year it all comes down to the QB. If Morris wasn't god awful, Golden would have much greater standing.
This isn't true. It all comes down to the defense. Each and every loss last year was attributable to the defense.
This isn't true. As usually is the case, a myriad of factors contribute to losses. Offense unable to sustain drives and convert on 3rd downs was equally attributable to losses as the defense.
