Golden on WQAM: 08/20/14

Of course they brought Heaps in to play and would prefer him to start. Best case scenario for them is if Heaps starts, Williams comes back, and Kayaa stands with a clip board in his hands. Kayaa having something to say about that though.

IMO, I think This all hinges on Ryan Williams Returning by Nebraska or Duke.. They obviously WANT Heaps so they don't burn Kaaya's redshirt.

Ryan Williams is GONNA Play ... So the Question is .. Do you Burn Kaaya RS for 3 games or Have Heaps hold the Fort until RW comes back?.....

I'm pretty sure Golden is banking on the Latter.

Because if Kaaya Plays... Then you let him play ALL Year... No Turning back...

JC

Kaaya's redshirt should have nothing to do with anyone's thinking. With his measurables and the skills he's already shown, the only way he is here for 5 years is if he completely tanks. Then, no one would want him here anyway 5 years down the road if he tanked that badly.

Funny he said he doesn't watch the bowl game tape, different team, blah, blah. He can bet Petrino has watched it.

Petrino probably has a little more to gain as we have the same staff. UL will have entirely new offensive and defensive schemes, so we'd be better off watching WKU and UGA tape.

If Heaps is healthy and can be close to 100 percent by Saturday he's the starter. If not Kaaya gets baptized by fire. Not knowing what is

You make a valid point, but that doesn't mean he can't watch it to see tendencies in their returning players or for the mere fact we got our a$$ blown out. Pretty sure Saban has watched the Sugar Bowl debacle. ****, he probably made the returning players watch it to remind them how they ended the season.

It stood out to me when I read it as well. I'm not reading too much into it but thought I would add to the discussion.

"Jake Heaps on not participating scrimmage
- medically concern about him
- "wouldn't say he is 100%, but he is ready to go"
"

I'm not sure why everybody believes Heaps resting means he's set to start. Him sitting out the scrimmage tilts the table in Kaaya's favor in my opinion. He's not practicing and Kaaya is. He's not getting full reps, and Kaaya is. That's advantage Kaaya in the competition. We NEED both QB's to be ABLE to play on Labor Day, so if Heap's arm isn't 100% he needs to rest it whether they are projecting him to be the starter or Kaaya's backup. We need him if Kaaya starts. What if BK gets hurt in the game? I know it's sacrilege, but what if BK ***** the bed in the first half??? If Heaps has a sore arm they are resting him whether he's going to start or back up BK. IMHO the extra reps and practice Kaaya is getting vs. Heaps simply tilts what has been portrayed as a close competition in Kaaya's favor.

I almost wonder if they were leaning towards Heaps but his injury has them in a wait-and-see.

Why would they rest an arm if they weren't planning on using it labor day? Think about it.

So...if he has a sore arm and they weren't planning on using him on Labor Day, they wouldn't rest it? I don't see the logic there at all.

Depends on whether they feel he has the job locked.
Heaps injury seems to be something that he could have played through. If the coaches still were unsure of the starter, I'm sure they would have had him play through the soreness.
Also, this move gave Kaaya more practice running the offense with the ones. Kaaya needs all the experience he can get.
I think the coaches did this so that in case he's needed labor day he would have gotten the sufficient reps that they would have been comfortable with.

I think otherwise... if you play Kaaya now he will have 3 starts under his belt. He will have some experience for the start of next year and can go into the 2015 season with more confidence. He is gone after 4 years. Roiser, Lawson, and Allison will be here for the next half.

How does he not watch the film to identify and evaluate where our returning players strengths match up with their returners weaknesses? Especially when he can see it first hand and not Loserville's tape against UConn from last year. Sure they have a new coach, scheme and QB but they still have a lot of players from that bowl team that will be playing on Labor Day

With arm soreness, for a QB or pitcher, "playing through" the soreness can very easily lead to much longer term, chronic injury. That's simply not something we can afford given that Heaps will be either the starter, or the backup to a true freshman QB. It makes perfect sense that they would be very careful with his arm regardless of whether they expect him to be the starter, the backup, or haven't decided yet.

This right here.

Ryan Williams is the QB when he comes back... IMO they're just trying to get a feel for when it is going to be.

The way I see it is, this staff is actually having a difficult time not naming Kaaya the starter. If they really were just gonna pick the senior, I feel it would have already happened, and the it appears that two things have happened instead. Heaps not being able to separate himself like was expected by the staff, and Kaaya exceeding expectations.

Before Kaaya even showed up or Heaps for that matter and RW was our QB, the constant talk was having an experienced signal caller that was gonna be a game manager here. Also lets not fool ourselves, RW wasnt exactly a stud in the first place, he could not beat out Morris, think about that. So obviously the rebuttal to that is, Golden wanted a senior. Well Golden has a senior and has yet to name him the starter over a true freshman. I think the staff does indeed want a senior at QB, but Kaaya's talent and play is making the decision that difficult for them, to the point where they appear to be going against their tendencies.

Golden doesn't have the balls to start Kaaya.

Heaps will start and then Williams will take over when he's healthy. 7 wins here we come!

He said coaches watch it in terms of the personnel but the team doesn't study their offense or defense.
