Golden/D'Onofrio Defensive Philosophy

How did look at depth chart on defense(young and enexperienced) , turn into look how our coaches suck so quickly.****. suck it up.

I'm so tired of people acting like thinking is forbidden in football.

I'm happy that they have put a premium on recruiting Defensive linemen who have used their hands in high school. Even Keith Bryant is seen using his hands in his highlight tape. Bostwick is shedding almost exclusively in his tape. Briscoe is the same and ivery in limited action has even shown that ability.

The whole, "we can't pick this up" is garbage as well. It's going to take time, but there is no doubt that good football players can pick up things.

This is the thought process that set American Basketball back. Big Men are supposed to be big men and not pass, or handle, or make good decisions with the ball.

In the same vain we are crippling our guys by not giving them the advantage of being exposed to all defensive line techniques and not exposing our linebackers and secondary to zone responsibilities. At that point, they then become system players as opposed to great football players.

Not saying that the scheme is without fault, just saying that the philosophy is sound and that fundamentally, it's the right concept.

Great post.

Watch alabama play and then tell me that that is a bad system.

Thats what we are trying to run. Give it time.

We have Perryman, Cornelius, Armbrister, Gionni Paul, Jawand Blue, Jimmy gaines, Linebackers we bringing in? 210 pound Matthew thomas 205 pound Grace at LB all LInebvackers under 220. Fool we aint never gonna be Alabamas defense no way in **** their linebackers pushing 250-260

This is exactly what I said in the 2 gap thread, First thing Saban did was go find a Juco NT to run his system (Terrance Cody 6'5 350) once he had that piece it all came together we are trotting 290 guys at Tackle who get blown off the ball at the snap, I havent seen us Try to recruit a Big guy the 2 year they have been here and we dont have one commited this year. Plus you need BIG backers to take on blocks and shed. If that is our scheme no wonder we suck, we are doing it all wrong, lol..

This is what I have a problem with. How much time is needed? We need to recruit players that fit the scheme, develop them in the weight room, teach them a system that for the most part they are going to be unfamiliar with, and if all this works out, WE BACK lol

Honestly, the staff is setting themselves up for 4 years from now but the problem I have with that is that if everything goes according to plan, we should have a decent D in 3-4 years.... Maybe! If they have recruited some 'JAGS', then its going to take alot longer. Some freshman we recruited already look like they might not pan out (Briscoe moving to OL, O'Donnell moving to TE). Why hope players can pick up a D that wasn't exactly effective @ Temple, when you can run a D that takes advantage of what players excelled at in High school?!?

This is the second year D'Onofrio has had to implement his D and we look more lost than last year. Its not just a matter of "players cant pick it up", its a matter of "we arent showing ANY signs of improvement". Some players are even regressing.

I'm not saying SFLA players lack intelligence, I'm saying SFLA usually produces smaller, lighting-quick LBs.. Which the current staff seems to be unimpressed with. SFLA also produces penetrating DL, which the current staff are trying to turn into 2-gappers.. We are small and quick. Why not implement a system that takes advantage of that! We are undersized on the DL but still run the same system as if we had 300lb DE's and a 350ld NT.

THIS DOESNT MAKES SENSE NO MATTER HOW YOU LOOK AT IT!

this is why I say we need Chick and them guys playing OLB from the jump. O'Donnell could have been in that mix too. Have guys coming in as freshman at a decent weight for them to be 250 or so 2 years in instead of having them try to put on weight as fast as possible. Swasey can get guys speed and agility up better than most so let him focus on that with them while they naturally and gradually put on the weight to be big stanford/bama sized OLBs. Instead we got Chick trying to gain as much weight as possible. Williams trying to gain as much weight as possible as fast as possible. Same for Hoillet and McCord - mention getting their weight up before anything else cause they are trying to be DEs. Just put them as OLBs from the start and they don't focus on weight as their #1 priority. Plus the fact that we play them lined right over OTs just makes their slightness at DE even more of a problem. At least at OLB they would most likely be playing the outside shoulders of OTs.

the ILBs don't need to be huge dudes - if they can be big like Donte Hightower and run like him that's even better. But their ILBs don't have to be huge like that. Leading tackler right now is listed at 235. Have a few other 220/230 somethinga at ILB. We can have our current LBs convert to ILB and if the ones who don't make that cut can always become FBs or transfer.

Alabama's system isn't what we're trying to run. Alabama puts a ton of pressure on the teams in front of them they don't sit back in the cover 3 all day.

yep. plus Nick Saban has said it a million times. if a CB can't play bump n run he's not interested in him. bump n run is a huge part of that defense. they physically challenge you at every level.
