Now, I understand what Golden/D'Onofrio are trying to install at UM. They want a 2 GAP system that we can zone blitz behind and cause all kind of havoc. In theory, its a great D to run when you have the horses. But, with the types of players SLFA produces, it seems kinda stupid to run a D were players are expected to read-and-react when, from optimist, they are tought to penetrate and attack.

For DL, the area produces some of the quickest DL off the ball in the nation. Every year there is a handful of big bodies that are use there quickness to force their way into the backfield and disrupting plays. Yet, we are recruiting them to take up blockers and try to hold the line of scrimmage??? There are tons of edge-rushers a stones throw from Coral Gables. Yet, we recruit them to drop into coverage?? SFLA produces some of the best man-to-man DBs in the nation and all we've seen is zone and soft man!!

Maybe I'm in the minority but it seems like we are going to be trying to force naturally athletic players into out-thinking themselves. Its hard for me to watch UM games and think this D will eventually get better cause I'm looking at players who seem to be going away from what probably got them recruited to UM in the first place. I watch Standford play and think that's what UM should look like if everything goes according to plan but we have access to athletes Stanford only dreams of getting. Why should that be the end goal???

Maybe I'm just a frustrated fan but I'm started to notice certain things that makes me wonder what the heck is going on a UM. It also seems like we have really focused our recruiting to getting players with alot of size, especially at LB. But its kinda funny that our two best LB's in the last 5 years have been Denzel and Sean Spence (both undersized for their position). You cant teach what these guys bring on saturday!! I hate to miss on future kids like them cause they dont meet the height requirement.

Does anyone else notice this?

This has been the most hotly discussed topic on the football board for weeks.

Personally, I couldn't care less what scheme we run. Just recruit good players and develop them.

BTW imagine what a thinking-man's defense looks like with top-level talent.

This is what I'm saying... We dont need a genius as DC.. But we need someone who understands the talent they have and their limitations.

I'm still on the fence with Coach D because this kids werent recruited by him. But I dont believe he's playing on changing up the D when his guys get in there. And that would be a shame. He's going to try to run a "BIG 10" D with SFLA talent.. We shouldn't have to leave the state for any position of D. But with the philosophy he's shown so far, we'll have no choice.

What limitations?

You think the kids in rural Alabama are significantly "smarter" than the kids in South Florida?

I think this is getting blown out of proportion.

The defense is going to look a lot better next year, and I think we'll be a great defense in 2014.

Nope. Sky is falling. Rome is burning. Cancel the program.

I certainly hope you are correct, I haven't seen a lot of improvement thus far and would have expected them to be improving by this point, but agree that it's hard to make chicken salad out of chiken ****. These young guys are being asked to do too much right now.

We haven't gone from zeroes to heroes, but there has been improvement. The linebackers are night and day compared to the beginning of the season. Even the d-line looked better against UNC. Were they All Americans? No, but they improved.

+1

I'm happy that they have put a premium on recruiting Defensive linemen who have used their hands in high school. Even Keith Bryant is seen using his hands in his highlight tape. Bostwick is shedding almost exclusively in his tape. Briscoe is the same and ivery in limited action has even shown that ability.

Hopefully Briscoe can help us next year. He looks the part.

And let's give it up for Dorito, had a defense at Temple who did well against Villanova, got to big time college football and ***** all over himself on the sideline. 118th in t he country.

But hey, gather round his recliner as he tells you the tales of the time he shut down Kent State's offense

Agree. The goal isn't to be as good as Alabama or Stanford. The goal is to be even better. The only way to do that is to use the mad scientist defense and add SFL talent . . . and . . . holy ****h

side note: did we run more looks on defense against UNC than before?

If D'Onofrio is as incompetent as you say he is, then Golden is incompetent, too.

He's seen D'Onofrio's work up close and personal for years, and he's running his defense.

He has another year and a half here, but I'd say it wouldn't surprise everyone if that turns out to be the case.

Another year and half here before what?

He just got a 50-year extension.

Pray that Golden is the guy, because dude ain't going anywhere.

Til he hits the standard 3 year mark where coaches usually have proven what they're gonna be.
