Generous Donor to UM; lot of Tomatos

maybe they could have spared a couple hundred million out of the 1.2 billion they already have

It would be one thing if this had never come up before, but the laws about pledges to a university have been explained so many times that ignorance on the topic is just plain inexcusable. You can't take money that a person committed to one project (i.e. Research and Faculty Development) and just slide it over to something else, like a football stadium. Maybe you can do it on some NCAA 2014 game, but in real life, there are actual rules about the use of donations.

Do you not get that UM has raised close to 3 billion dollars in about 10 years. My comment wasn't about the specifics of getting it done and the rules that apply. It was meant to highlight that for a school which could raise the money to build 3 Dallas cowboys stadium, building a small college stadium shouldn't be a problem if they really wanted to.

Then improve your writing. You said that they could use some of the $1.2 billion. They can't. If you meant that if they could raise $1.2 billion on one campaign they could raise a hundred million for a stadium, then write "if they could raise $1.2 billion on one campaign they could raise a hundred million for a stadium".

If you are going to parse every word I write in order to justify an attack, at least try not to be a liar about what I wrote.

Yup. It's there, bro.

The money is there to build a stadium.

That's 100% fact; just got out of the vault.

In other words, you don't know. It's just fun to blast the university and pretend as though the money is there. Cool, bro. See you at Sunset Place later.

You're wrong.

Reread.

I just said I walked out of the vault, duh. I spied, with my brown eyes, enough money to build a stadium.

Now take your little schtick elsewhere. You're annoying.

Don't hide behind semantics. "Maybe" doesn't work either. There is no "maybe" about it. Come on, man up and admit that what you wrote was inaccurate. It won't kill you to take the blame for your own mistake.

So you make a claim, can't defend it, and now I have a "schtick"? Funny. Like I said, it's more fun to just blast the university.

You're a liar: I never blasted the university. It seems like you have a stick up your *** this morning, because you dislike the FACT that UM has the cash to build a new stadium.

Listen up: After entertaining your initial replies, an uncontrollable urge fueled me to see for myself. So, I called Donna, and told her I needed the keys to the vault. She obliged. I saw the cash. There's MORE than enough to build a stadium, way more. That's a fact, jack.

Now take your rebuttals elsewhere. I don't appreciate your fallacious claims.

Unless you can prove I didn't see the cash, you should just bow out.

Maybe you don't know the meaning of the word maybe: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/maybe

No semantics there. I proposed a general possibility in order to highlight a particular point (which I plainly stated in the full comment that you chose to cherry pick from) within the context of the discussion I was with someone else. Get over yourself.

Not exactly Jimmy Fallon.

The funny thing is that once it turned into an adult discussion, you hid behind your failed comedy routine. When questioned about your "so long as money is not an issue" comment, you crawled into a shell. Can't be having a conversation around these parts. But that's what earns credibility on this board, so keep up the good work.

The important thing is that now you know that pledged money can't be used for other projects. But we've all been around those insecure students who get defensive when the teacher puts them on the spot. I'll try to use PM next time so it's not so embarrassing.

Project much?

Guy makes donation. CIS comedy crew mocks donations for not being used to build a stadium. Poster calls them on it. They get mad. Slap and tickle fight ensues.

Thanks for morning entertainment.

If you want a stadium to be a priority, call Blake James and ask him the process to start a stadium fund. Then donate to it and let us all know how to do the same.

Until then appreciate donations by others or STFU.

Please, please, please please, show me one comment where I mock the donation. Any criticism has been directed towards the school because the allegation has always been (in all fairness not necessarily the school making these allegations) that there isn't any money, or there isn't any land, or its just too complicated.

The total sum of donations (not this particular one) highlights that the money can be there. Marlins Stadium and now the new soccer stadium highlight that there is land and its not too complicated. That just leaves they simply just don't want to.

This is the part I question. Are the donors who contributed billions to the academic side of the university willing to do the same for a stadium? I agree, we won't know if we don't try, but I think it's a poor assumption to claim that a completely different, unrelated project would be as successful. Remember, there are more people at the Big Cheese at noon than there were at the "Save the Orange Bowl" rally.

Its "only" a few hundred million compared to about 3 billion in about ten years. They don't even have to raise the whole thing. The could raise half and find a way to finance the rest. This isn't brain surgery, they just don't want to do it.

But is that really it? We're not dealing with idiots here. If it was financially in the best interests of the University, they would be on it. And maybe they are, without holding a press conference to tell us what they are looking into right now. But I doubt that the lady who has spearheaded two billion dollar campaigns is just too lazy to do it.

I wouldn't attribute UM not having a stadium to Donna being lazy.

I am inclined to believe that some very powerful people at UM simply don't want one.

Generating the money to build a stadium is something I believe Donna and company can absolutely pull off IF the desire to do so is there.

What do you think (or know) that their reasons are? Limiting athletics?

Sorry, but you contradicted yourself in successive posts there, chief.

Let's assume we have the approval to build a stadium on campus, the BOT, President, etc. is in favor of it, and the money is in place to do it (basically a perfect scenario):

1. I think there is a concern about maintaing a stadium, especially when it'll be used very little over the course of the year.

~ Now don't get me wrong, an on campus stadium could be used for a variety of purposes. So, football wouldn't be the only source of revenue. I'm sure other events can help subsidize the costs of operating it. But, this is getting off track, so i will leave it at that.

2. The volume of people that will bombard Coral Gables during football games. Let's face it, there will definitely be a threat of violence, littering, loitering (basically a reduced quality of life) in and around the UM campus.

~ Having attended games at BC, I must admit, it is possible to regulate this, just sure not sure how probable that would be. Who would be responsible for ensuring the safety of all during games? Where is the money coming from to pay for that?

Those are a few ideas that I think would prevent something like this from occurring. We've read and discussed (either here or elsewhere) stadium talk for a looooooooooooooooong time now. Just wanted to add a few ideas that aren't discussed too much.
