Bet he gets a phone call back when calls the U. Perhaps Mr. Wilson should try a different approach.

South Dade farmer pledges $12.5 million to University of Miami

The University of Miami on Thursday announced that South Dade tomato grower — and well-known philanthropist — Paul DiMare is pledging $8 million to the university’s current fund-raising campaign.

The latest gift from DiMare and his wife Swanee comes after the family had already pledged $4.5 million to UM’s current fund-raising drive, known as Momentum2.

UM officials said the $12.5 million total now pledged by the DiMares ranks among the largest gifts received from an individual or family.

“We are lucky to have them as leaders and as supporters of the U,” said Sergio Gonzalez, UM’s senior vice president for university advancement.

UM’s current fund-raising drive is a follow-up to the first Momentum campaign, which began in 2003 and wrapped up several years later as a record-breaking success. That first campaign hauled in $1.4 billion.

The university publicly announced the Momentum2 campaign about two years ago, with the goal of raising $1.6 billion by 2016. The money will fund a wide range of initiatives, from medical school improvements to student scholarships to renovating dorms.

At the launch two years ago, UM had already amassed $905 million during the silent phase of the fund-raising effort.

The total now: about $1.26 billion, which puts UM ahead of schedule in reaching the final $1.6 billion goal.

The $12.5 million from the DiMares breaks down as follows: $6 million for medical school scholarships, $2 million for a 200-seat performance hall in UM’s new music building, $1.5 million to athletic scholarships, $1 million to the new Schwartz Center for Athletic Excellence, $1 million to paralysis research, and $500,000 to stem cell research.

Paul DiMare said the $6 million gift was prompted by UM losing out on 27 top-notch students who wanted to attend medical school here but received more-generous financial aid offers elsewhere. DiMare said the scholarships will reward the best students who also have a demonstrated financial need.

“I said to myself, ‘This is terrible. We can’t be losing the top students,’ ” DiMare said. “Now we’ll be able to match the money.”

Not the biggest football fan apparently.

He is one of the biggest football fans. Paul has already given millions to the sports program. They have named the Hall of Champions in the new Schwartz center for him. He attends every game when in town. He gave to restart the basketball program. You can see his name on a banner in the BUC and he sits behind the visitor bench almost every game. He gave to the baseball program. Look at the plaque in front of Mark Light Stadium and he attends almost every game in his suite next to A-Rods suite. He chairs the Athletic Committee of the Board of Trustees. He funds 10 full athletic scholarships every year in all sports. One of the most generous and nicest people anyone could ever know. And there is more he is doing which I can't reveal. We should all be thankful for his generosity, especially for someone who never attended the U.

He also played a large role in the coaching search which landed us Golden. I remember Holcutt recognizing him and Bernie for their help.

So in other words, if they really wanted to build a stadium they could, but they just don't give a sh*t.

The most important man in Miami athletics.

When the school went looking for a coach in 2011, it was Paul DiMare and Bernie Kosar leading the charge.

I dont think it means they dont give a sh*t hough clearly it is a question of prioritizing. For example, having seen my kid in the dorms, they could use some upgrading. If I am a University Trustee I look at impact of the dollars on as many kids kids as posisble. Lord knows there are enough stadium threads.

Need more donors like this to get behind the idea before it is going to happen. Only so many home games a year ; ( and only so much revenue derived.

Someone needs to give Mr. Dimares a Thorough breakdown of the current tragedy occurring in our south florida neighborhoods, as SEC vandals pillage our resources left and right to Arky, UGA, LSU, and one of the bigger offenders not even SEC country but our biggest rival.

Next article needs to read like this:

“I said to myself, ‘This is terrible. We can’t be losing the top students athletes,’ ” DiMare said. “Now we’ll be able to match the SEC/FSU money.”

Salute to Mr. Dimares, I pour a shot for you good sir

The real question is where will the millions of dollars go that the football program
got for going to a bowl game last year and the ACC winning the natty?

And he will be there again leading the charge when we go to replace Golden. I hope by that time he has adjusted his criteria that the next HC actually has a winning record against teams in his conference and has won something. I'm juts saying...

Endowing the football scholarships is a very smart strategy as it eliminates one of the biggest costs of funding a D-1 program going forward. Now we the increase ACC payouts and TV deal I would like to see more of those monies being invested into the football program, thats the whole reason behind moving into the ACC in the first place and hopefully we can increase our assistant coaches salaries to bring in good coaches when coaches leave or are fired.

i'd love to know where you'd put this stadium and where the money for the infrastructure improvements would come from.

Maybe they could have put it wherever the soccer stadium is going and maybe they could have spared a couple hundred million out of the 1.2 billion they already have. The point is that its not the insurmountable task some would make it out to be. They just don't want to do it.
