Now that we're going to a playoff format, scheduling will be more important in the future then it is now. The new format allows for imperfection since all these teams can't be undefeated but can still get into the playoff for the National Championship.
So you schedule a big game at a neutral site, make a boat load of money and if you lose it won't hurt you as bad.
Also, I believe, in due time the 4 team playoff will be expanded to 8 teams.
Bingo! They pretty much have to expand since it would be assumed that the SEC would take 2 of the 4 slots every year. The ACC, Pac 12, and the Big 12 will definitely push for it, that's for sure.
If they go to this revamped 8 team playoff, you need rules...
1. 5 of the 8 playoff teams are the conference champion (i.e. ACC, Big 12, Big 10, Pac-12 and SEC), so the former Big East falls out and become part of the at large pool.
2. Of the 8 playoff teams, only at most 2 can come from the same conference.
3. No pre-season rankings or any rankings till after week 5.
4. After all conference championships games are decided, those conference champions are removed from the equation (of ranked teams) and the highest 3 ranked schools advance as an at large team. The teams are then re-seeded from best to worst.
1 versus 8
--------- Winner v Winner
4 versus 5
--------------------------------------- Championship Game
2 versus 7
--------- Winner v. Winner
3 versus 6
5. In order to keep things fair, the 5 major conference opponents must schedule out of conference games against each other twice. So Alabama must play two non-conference games against opponents against an ACC, Big 10, Big 12 or Pac-12 opponent.
