Full go with 3-4 Defense

Can we all agree this is the most talented we have been in the interior d line since their first year here?

I am not in love with 3 -4 because it requires more beef on our players and they tend to get slower. But if we are going to run it, then run it in the other teams backfield and not 8 yards down-field.

Understandable but I think this allows our younger pass rushers to be more effective. Well I hope so anyway. Tyriq and Quan should benefit quite a bit from this I would think.

Quan and McCord need to a factor on 3rd downs or our 3rd down percentage will again be abysmal.

It's McCords time to be effective on every down IMO. I've said it so many times I've lost count but he was borderline useless doing anything but rushing the passer at certain times. People that thought he was more valuable to this defense than Chick are nuts. I don't think. McCord has the physical ability to be a full time 4-3 DE, or at least could be better as a 3-4 OLB. Couple that with Figs being let go and you can see how our needs may have shifted a bit.

I think we have the size up front to hold the point of attack and let the rushers do their thing. It's not going to be world beating because we don't have anyone up front that can be disruptive (well yet anyway) but I can see where the coaches are going with this to be honest. It might no be the ideal move but I can see the thinking.

Chad Thomas is out of position as a DE in the 3-4. just like Chick is

these ******** are ruining these guys career prospects

Why is he out of position? You are assuming we are strictly a 3-4 front. We are a multiple front and they'll put him where he's needed. He's already one of the most gifted players on the field and those types of players need to be on the field whenever they can be.

Is don't give a **** whether we run a 3-4 or a 4-3 as long as we get lined up before the snap. The last two years has been hard to watch the players stand around then rush around right before the snap. Coach D needs to get calls in a lot faster. We've literally have a handful of plays ever game where our D lineman aren't even ready when the other team snaps the ball. There is no excuse for that at all. He's already terrible at calling a game and this makes it worse.

3-4 DEs should be in the 280-300 lb range. Chad Thomas (just like Chick) looks like a 4-3 DE and MAYBE a 3-4 OLB (jack)

Golden said on day one we would use mixed fronts. I want our defense to have that kind of flexibility. In other interviews, Kamalu, Wyche, Heurt, etc. have talked about lining up on the inside in 4 man fronts.

this defense has to change..

GT will be 9 guys in the box...

what spread teams do we play
how many Pro style, or west coast type

college is about adapting to who we play..we could play Duke who plays a pro style than knock out the QB now we have a young Fast QB that can run etc..

always changing

EXACTLY! Being flexible is key.

BUT WHEN DOES ALEX COLLINS ARRIVE ON CAMPUS??

From the Al quote, sounds like this team will be full time 3-4. Notice how there is no mention of AQM, Jackson, or Trent Harris as a DE's.

What has Golden seen out of the defensive line?

"Just deeper and stronger. That's the deepest we've been - no question. You've got Anthony Chickillo, Ufomba Kamalu, Jelani Hamilton and Chad Thomas mixing it in at end. Then you've got Kamalu playing on the other side as well with Olsen Pierre, Anthony Moten and Corey King. Then inside we've got a lot of guys rotating in there at nose - Earl Moore, Calvin Heurtelou, Mike Wyche and Courtel Jenkins. We're getting a lot more speed on the field then we have."

Also this photo of Chad Thomas and Demetrius Jackson playing on the same side is more evidence.

This looks like
WDE Olsen Pierre
SDE Chad Thomas
SAM Demetrius Jackson
There is also a NT being blocked that I can't make out

I am actually very excited about this, it gets more speed on the field as well as more natural pass rushers.

The 3-4 absolutely does not get more speed on the field. It gets more size on the field; completely counterintuitive to South Florida football.

Just keep the points off the board.

true but that is what Coach D and Al have been trying..we need to take it a step further now and stone cold kill folks,,3 and outs have to increase we have already seen a nice increase on sacks and turnovers..now we have to stop the big play..

Chad is a 255 pound true freshman who has never had a serious weightlifting program. Chad will be 280 in no time and still be explosive.

Think 3-4 DE Like
Cameron Jordan from the Saints 6-4 287 (47 tackles and 12.5 sacks)
J.J. Watt from the Texans 6-5 285 (80 tackles and 10.5 sacks)
Calais Campbell

Please stop comparing Chad Thomas and Chick, they are just totally different football players. Chad has the frame to be bigger and he is simply more explosive that Chick has ever been. Added weight will not hurt Chad, it will only make him better.

South Florida football actually is the perfect breading ground for 3-4 DE's and OLB's. Every recruiting cycle there will be multiple undersized DE's in South Florida that are still explosive and very fast, the same is true for undersized DT's in South Florida.

Converting guys from undersized DT to 3-4 DE (Anthony Moten) or converting undersized a DE to a 3-4 OLB (Mike Smith, Demetrius Jackson) will always be a option in South Florida.
