Florida State Post Game Plus/Minus

Minus

We need Yearby now. After Duke, we have no threat at RB.

Walford went full Bobo the clown tonight with juggling act.

SteMo played again

Game Thoughts
• We got out schemed on defense…I dunno how many times they got to the edge with a numbers advantage for big plays;
• Our CB’s have to get stronger and disengage blocks…no way Kenny ****ing shaw should be riding our CB’s like that;
• Morris is what he is at this point…no more he just had a bad game he’s just not the QB we though going into the season;
• I hope Duke is okay we played hard out there;
• Hurns played like a senior;
• Highsmith missed on too many plays time to give carter some snaps after VT;
• And can we please recruit a kicker…Goudis doesn’t have it and should be cut;
• The team needs to forget this loss quickly and come out hungry against VT…the season’s all about winning the coastal at this point;

I don't think it was schemed for Green to give up contain on virtually every running play they ran.

Here are my thoughts

4. For those crying and whining on the gameday in game thread, STFU. If you don't realize we're still 1-2 years away, go the **** away and root for another team and then jump back on the bandwagon in 2 years. We have guys playing now that have no business playing D-I football, but they're still playing out of necessity because we're not there yet.

5. Morris. What can you say. Very good first half, very bad second half. The INT to Coley was dog****. Sure TD if he throws it 3-4 seconds earlier. I was watching the game with a high school OC and he thinks Walford ran the wrong route on the 2nd INT, and that's why Morris threw it the way he did, and Morris reacted the way he did, yelling at Walford on the sideline. He thought Walford was supposed to round it off a little more. Who knows. Morris had a horrible second half regardless.

13. Coley the OC is frustrating sometimes with slow developing runs, and refusing to move Morris on 3rd and short by giving him a run/pass option. Why can't we run a successful screen? The playcall on 4th and 2 was atrocious. FSU knew where it was going.

17. Last point, and this is the big one. Golden's biggest coaching job was not this week. It was not getting them ready to play for FSU. It was not getting them fired up for this game. His biggest job is getting them ready to play against VT. They absolutely cannot lay an egg against VT. They absolutely cannot have an emotional hangover against VT. They have to forget this game, and know if they come to play the rest of the season, they'll play FSU again. VT is bad, we need to come out and play well next week.

Great stuff here, NS85.

Walford looked lost the whole game. Either his blood sugar was off or he had the flu or something but the dude was just aloof. Players had to tell him where to line up on a number of plays.

Player personnel packages are also questionable with coach coley. Where are Mo Hagens and/or Walter Tucker on 4th and short?? Using Duke Johnson on 4th and short in a one back set is incompetent.

Agreed. Its all about Va Tech. My quiet goal coming into tonight was hoping we only lost by 10 or less. I thought our kids would feel like they could beat anyone that way. Now I think coach Golden has work to do over the next 6 days.

Also - This was a good measuring stick game. We've definitely moved up the stick since last year but still have a ways to go.

I've been asking this for awhile. We desperately need a power back; a Todd Gurley between the tackles.

Honestly, if I'm Golden, I burn the tape from this game. We don't need it. Well, don't burn it, save it for if we play them again, but the team needed to start thinking about VT in the lockeroom 5 minutes after the game ended.

Here are my thoughts

1. We played them basically even in the first half (just like last year)

2. We played a horrible second half and they ran away with it (just like last year, though it was closer at home)

3. I'm still not that impressed with FSU. Yes, they beat us by 27, and you can call me a sore loser, but we missed a FG, we got stuffed on a fourth down after Coley dropped a pass that would have given us first and goal. Morris missed a sure TD to Coley when it was 28-14. This game should have been a lot closer than the final score.

6. Duke was finally having a good game against a top team, and then this. Hopefully it's just an ankle sprain and he comes back this year. It looked bad.

7. Coley the player did not have a good game. Can everyone now STFU up with the Sammy Watkins comparisons? Maybe he will be in 2 years, not today, not this year.

8. So, I guess Rashawn Scott is "back" but not "back" enough to play?

9. Perryman, and I said this during the week, is not having a good year. He's racking up tackles, but he aside from the UF game where he balled out, he's not making an impact. And don't post that great hit against Wake, it was after a 15 yard gain, big ****ing deal. If he's an elite LB he needs to make his presence known. He is not.

10. I'm not commenting on Highsmith because I just don't want to be mean, and I like his Dad.

11. Quan is going to be a stud, but he got juked twice on what should have been drive ending sacks that led to first downs and eventually FSU TDs. Frustrating, but the raw talent is there.

12. I did love the enthusiasm from the team, but that can only take you so far. We're getting back, but we're not there yet. We don't have the horses. FSU is 2-3 years ahead of us. We knew this, but a lot of us wouldn't admit it.

13. Coley the OC is frustrating sometimes with slow developing runs, and refusing to move Morris on 3rd and short by giving him a run/pass option. Why can't we run a successful screen? The playcall on 4th and 2 was atrocious. FSU knew where it was going.

14. For all those whining that Coach D is too vanilla, well he blitzed a lot tonight, and they got burned. He sat back, and they got burned, so STFU, it's the players not being as good, not the scheme.

15. Goudis sucks. Plain and simple. Can O'Donnell kick FG? I have no confidence in Goudis unless it's within 30 yards. Pathetic.

16. I honestly don't think FSU is amazing. They're better, deeper and more talented than us, but this is not an unbeatable team. If we have Duke back, and we play better, we can beat this team in Charlotte (if we get there).

17. Last point, and this is the big one. Golden's biggest coaching job was not this week. It was not getting them ready to play for FSU. It was not getting them fired up for this game. We need to recruit a better kicker

What in this game showed that we moved up the stick from last year? I did have the same goal as a 10 or less point loss though. It will probably be another frustrating game win/lose against VT.

I am not a Coach D fan but I am having a hard time finding a defensive scheme these players would excel at. With the core guys we play, we have NO speed or athleticism at DE, LB or S. Our DT's are average at best as well. Plays are there to be made in a lot of situations but these guys are too slow to get their or keep up.

The entire first half. The fact that we were a couple of mistakes away from keeping it close well into the second half too. You've been negative on here for weeks, looking for a reason to be even more negative, so fire away, I'm sure you're secretly enjoying this.

Morris is not a championship QB. Elway, Brees, Manning, etc all hated to lose at everything. Morris on the other hand gives no ***** as long he gets to show off his arm

I hate those stunts on D, we loop the slow guys outside so they cant contain and loop the fast guys inside where they can be block by big strong guards.

Safety play is bad especially with #30 back there but imo our LB's in coverage is what hurts us the most. Regardless of what we play, man or zone, they are just terrible. A lot of the big defensive plays we've given come from them.

They are usually solid against the run, tonight they were mediocre all around.

The biggest plus is the game is out of the way. I'm thrilled it was Breeders Cup day, and held on the west coast. The Classic ran at 8:50 PM Eastern so I watched that coverage throughout and never had time to pretend that the Canes would be competitive.

Other than Duke's injury, this result would have been perfectly fine. Now we can get rid of the fantasies and concentrate on teams on our own level. I'm looking forward to it. Preseason ratings seldom lie. In all my years in Las Vegas one of the first questions we asked of a sportsbook newcomer was his opinion of preseason ratings. If he gave the standard, "they're worthless...shouldn't exist," then he knew he was likely just another conventional wisdom simpleton, and would be leaving town broke on a bus. As I posted a couple of weeks ago, when we're rated 7th in August then I'll pay attention because it will mean our talent level justifies it.

Remember the Korean boxer who was destroyed all three rounds by Roy Jones Jr. in the 1988 Olympics? He's got to live with a gold medal he didn't earn for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, he could have been an Olympic legend if he'd traded medals on the podium with Jones.

Our 7th place rating the past couple of weeks reminded me of that phony gold medal. The other team has a 3-year head start on defensive acquisition and intensity level, as verified by their 4 yards per play sustained defensive average.

We need defensive tackles. That would be a good start toward that lofty preseason rating.

With Duke out, we have now lost our 3 best offensive players from last year: Duke, Dorsett, and Morris. IMO, we need to add another power back to go with Gus for next year. This is what is sorely missed this year. Beating up Duke on short yardage runs is decreasing his effectiveness. The guy has more heart than anyone, but we are ruining him. If Gus isn't ready, then use Hagens more. I think a change at center is needed as well. McDerm gets beat of his blocks by the better D tackles and wiffs on his run blocks. And 30 and 31 need not see the field again this year.

Without Duke, the VT game will be a war. VT isn't good, but Duke is Duke. ****, this sucks on so many levels, the biggest being he's a great kid.
