Fixing the defense - what would you do?

I know our personnel isn’t up to snuff but somewhere along the way we have to think about how they’re being used and what we can do schematically different. Virginia held UL to 230 passing yards and 3/10 on third downs. They don’t have better players than we do. Do we have lockdown players? No, should we be getting roasted for 350+ yards every week? **** no.
 
It seems our quarters playcalls are always match and we either take too long to figure out assignment or we easily get out leveraged and we always end up with our back to the qb.

Do we not have qtrs calls where we don’;t match/man on the backend?
 
I will simplify:

1. Would never blitz
2. Play cover 3 as much as possible
3. Stop having so many exotics where Barron or Bain are dropping, i.e keep it basic and all in front of us. Dare teams to drive 80 yards with no mistakes and/or penalties.
4. The issues are easy to identify, just really hard to fix mid season with this personnel. We had a bye week and still looked like that, because too many problems to address and can't make a trade:)
5. SPECIAL TEAMS CAN BE FIXED EASIER, and is a true reflection of bad coaching. We have no punt return game, struggle to cover punts and kickoffs.

we have more talent than UVA on defense. the back 7 has been crap. OCs are exploiting us on the field with ease right now. USF put the tape out there and were getting ****ed over each week. cal is trash on O and they ran through us. Lville is a good offense but they legit had a record type day and we had no shot of stopping them short of running out of possessions.

Where is Markeith Williams?

2 games in a row, zero snaps.

Isn't his strength in coverage? I get it if you're playing a service academy, he's probably not suited to get into the game much. But this is one of the best passing teams in the country. Not a single play? What's going on here?

This isn’t aimed at you obviously but Markeith was ready against the gator in week 1, but not he ain’t ready? **** did he do during the OOC games?

Kiko is a senior and decide to come back this year. Unfortunately, coaches are still going to reward things like that. I do believe him having to sit out spring with injury and gaining weight has hurt his production this year and he's regressed.

Kiko, Jaden, Richards, and Hill all need to play less. None of of them are playing well right now. Wes is also still a little inconsistent with his play. Popo, OJ, Zay, and Markeith need to play more. Less man coverage and more zone.
 
Simplify things. Give the secondary less to think about. More straight up man 2 high safety or cover 2 zone. Fewer twists upfront. Less Kiko in coverage (although he wasn't terrible Saturday). More snaps for Markeith and Quan because they can't be worse than the starters. Get RW ready for live snaps before next season.
 
Do we know anything on the dynamic of the D staff? Does Guidry take advice from his assistants? I refuse to believe with the collective D minds in the room and knowing the kids capabilities they can't come up with a patch fix.

For starters they should definitely give Zaquan more and more PT over Harris and then ideally Damari Brown would come back in a couple weeks and take one of those starting spots back. That would be huge. Not really sure how to fix the LBs... I like what I've seen from Aguirre. Maybe he's earned some more PT as well

We're already basing out of 2-high anyway. We mixed it up between Cover-4, Cover-2 and Cover-6.

You can't run cover-2 with poor Safety play. It requires too much from that position.

Yea well you’re either going to let your safeties play halves or you’re going to ask them to play this hybrid zone stuff where the safety has a hard time passing off zones, and they definitely don’t understand the concepts. Prime example is #7 getting beat on simple post routes every week for 6

I see your comments about cover 3. I like that option as well but won’t that leave our hash to numbers vulnerable?

What the **** happened to Chase Smith. He was playing well and looked fast early in the season. Is he injured again?

Stop the run and try to be opportunistic on the backend.

The easiest solution is probably baptism by fire for Zaquan. Throw him in and let him go and get tons of experience against some average teams coming up on our schedule.

He's not gonna help stop the run because he'll be pulled out of the box versus spread formations.

There's a reason that the Nickel is the primary choice today. With all these spread offenses, you can't march a 230lb Linebacker out in space to cover slot WR's.
