Fixing the defense - what would you do?

I could listen to you break down and explain miami's defensive scheme for hours. Are you seeing the defense playing mostly match quarters, palms, and man?
I see Quarters or "Special/Stubby" (which is a Quarters variant) versus 3x1 (trips) formations. I've definitely seen some Palms.

Truthfully I don't think we have great players in the backend... but in my opinion Palms/Quarters is NOT the coverage you want to base in if your Safeties are questionable. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Zaquan starts, don’t be afraid to rotate meesh out. More 2/4 zone. Match zone no covering space.
Less “creative” blitzes that are easy to read. Drop out often.
SWITCHES.
No outside leverage with limited or no safety help.
Kiko blows, find him a towel boy gig.
Marriage of front/back end. Limit dumb plays like slant left and load left.

That’s all just a start

Mario said on Joe Rose this morning it’s things that can be fixed.

He mentioned alignment issues and basically #7 rostered the wrong way on the TD.

Have to simplify it for them or take #7 off the field

Putting a less athletic player at that spot will make this defense look worse than it already is. You will get absolutely shredded with a the current nickel spot.
We don’t have anyone that can play nickel effectively and we moved our best corner from a year ago to nickel and suffer at the other corner spot as a result. 3 true LBs, Pruitt could easily be a considered a hybrid guy, should be better against the run. Don’t see any passing games shredding us until Syracuse.

Stop the run and try to be opportunistic on the backend.

The easiest solution is probably baptism by fire for Zaquan. Throw him in and let him go and get tons of experience against some average teams coming up on our schedule.

Don’t complicate things.
The offenses we face the next few games aren’t that complicated.
We have more than enough talent on the dline to get it done where your don’t have to try and confuse the fck out of the qb.
You don’t need to hide or have complex blitz packages against fspoo.

Simplicity is the mother of invention. Think we'd be better off playing base 4-3 Cover 2 on nearly every snap with this group. Don't get playing 5 DBs when 4-5 of them stink. Think we confuse ourselves much more than the other team when we show one defense presnap and shift to something else post-snap.
Agree, keep it simple, we seemed to play better when we just rushed 4> also Cam Pruitt was being praised during spring about his coverage ability, don't know what happened to him. Alderman (21) seems to be pretty solid. I think Guidry needs to cool it with his schemes. He may need to do this at other schools with less talent, but he just needs to release the dogs and let them eat. I thought Richards wasn't too bad on Saturday. As bad as we tackle, and played, there was a kickoff return, a fumble, and what I thought was a bad interference call that led to touchdowns, that really wasn't on the defense.

Getting rid of the nickel position. Playing Porter and OJ exclusively at the boundary. Playing a true 4-3 defense. Get Aguirre, Chase Smith, and Bobby Pruitt on the field in the extra LB role. Pruitt probably the best fit for how the position would have to work to still be effective.

Then letting Zaquan play safety. Or I wonder if Pruitt can play some safety? Maybe even try Richard at safety.

Or I’m having an open competition and challenging anyone to get live action at nickel or safety. Mack, Day, Stafford, Robby Washington, anyone.
The problem with this staff is they say they have open competition, but I wonder how open they are to making the necessary switches. The other head scratcher is why our tackling has not improved.

Keep the LBs at a normal set depth. This game of walking them up on every play isn’t fooling anyone and it’s taking away their ability to read the play. Go back to the toss sweeps against VT and the swing passes against Cal and our lack of depth made it easy for them to turn the corner. When we walk them up it also creates a huge void that offenses are exploiting across the middle. I counted 4-5 crossing routes that were wide open windows for the QB to throw through. Having a backer starting there could shorten that window as our DBs are slow.

If our current guys are making mistakes then we need to see ZP, R Washington, etc. at least they have the athletic ability and speed to cover for some other deficiencies.
Are we slow, or are guys just thinking too much. Can't believe all our guys are slow.

Sell out and blitz every single play, go full Manny

Look right now the clear and obvious thing that should be done is Taking Richard out and Sliding Porter back outside. From there you rotate at Nickel and see who steps up. And I mean you give everyone a shot - ALL our CBs and Zaquon and Markeith included to play that nickel role. Cause right now it is clear that Richard is probably the single worst player on the defense right now, and Porter playing out of position significantly has reduced his positive impact.

The problem with our safety play is poor tackling and biting on misdirection basically. That is something I have basically zero faith in Markeith improving. Zaquan could be a solution there, but he just probably isn't ready (and unlike what people wanna say it is possible to be worse). And while everyone is putting all the blame on the safeties - and they've been poor - lets all be real here and say our LBs (and Edges, but imo that is mostly cause Guidry is calling too many DL stunts on run situations) have been incredibly bad at stopping or providing ANY help whatsoever outside on the edge. Like how many 1v1s with a RB to the outside should we honestly be expecting our Safeties to make every game? Sure they are getting beat too much on those situation, but they ARE difficult situations, and our LBs have been less than useless to help out.

Maybe the solution is a little less nickel Defense, and just having more 3 LB sets Or maybe you go to a crazy 5 Man front with Alston, Baron, Barrow, Mesidor, Bain, and and just let them play straight up with nothing crazy and free up the LBs to help outside more and play more different zones focused on making it easier on our safeties... There have been quite a few plays where we are stunting our DLineman and that is what is giving these RBs free lanes outside. To me Guidry needs to immediately cut back on that. Our DLineman need to start just winning straight up head to head. Give Offenses 7 on the line looks and drop guys into zones, and you can stunt a little on more likely passing downs, but these Run stunts/blitzes need to be scrapped. It's putting too much pressure on our safeties.

At this point I think Jaden Harris and Meesh are our safeties. I'd hope that taking Richard out, putting Porter at the position he's better at and not being as agressive on early downs and just letting our Front 4/5 Eat will NET a TD difference defensively. That is all we REALLY need. Our offense is elite. We need a solution that can be the difference in our defense holding teams to <30-35pts. We don't need some crazy solution that tries to get us to play defense that pitches shutouts. Just cut the big play rate and we are good.
agree on Porter, seems when we have an injury, we always seem to downgrade two positions, I thought Richards was actually not too bad on Saturday.

that's the frustration, we all know its fixable, the frustration is it doesn't get fixed. really it borders down to blocking and tackling, and lining up correctly.

Bench Harris and start Patterson

Mixing in more Moten and Scott on early downs. Stop stunting the DL on early downs. Mix in Alderman and Popo on passing downs. More zone. Literally be a bend but don’t break defense. Keep everything in front of you and stay in position. Clearly they’re not shutting any offense down. Getting 5+ stops a game probably wins us the game. Call it a soft defense but what’s the difference when you’re getting bombs thrown over your head with receivers running wide open. I’d rather them make a tackle after the RB gains 4 yards rather than Guidry stunting the DL on early downs and somebody not filling the gap. Rush your gap and play your assignment.

Mario is saying what he has to. He won’t turn on players which in his position is good.

If it could be fixed it would. We gave up a boat load of points to VaTech, Cal, and Louisville.

Our defense is no better than Austin Peay or Jacksonville State? Those are only 2 that gave up more points to Louisville.

We fix offense and defense takes a ****. I guess next year we fix defense and our offense tanks?

When you struggle you disguise. We are not doing that.

Get rid of all the 5.0 40yd dash defensive backs. Get better backers. Does #31 and #1 still play?

I would say use 70 percent of our NIL on a new back 7. This year, I really don’t know. Bend but don’t break and let Bain and company affect the passer
