Fixing the defense - what would you do?

Start Zaquan has to happen. 7 and 25 are unplayable, literally unplayable, particularly 7. It is what it is but there is no other possible interpretation of the film. 19 is probably the evil we have to live with depthwise. 2 has had a terrible year.

In general I’d play much less aggressively and more zone. We don’t have people who can cover or tackle in man. If we play somebody who can pick our zone to death, oh well. But I’d stretch this out very conservatively and buy our d-line more chances to break drives. That’s our only way out.

Id personally just go quarters coverage and send the 4 DL play. They are good about to create some pressure as is. At this point, we don’t need the defense to win us game. Legit play bend don’t break. Keep things in front and try to find a way to make them kick field goals vs 50 yard td.

Personal, I think ZP meds to play more. I’d also consider going three down and putting a Pruit or Bobby Washington in. At least if they get beat, they are fast enough to pursue to the ball

Keep them off the field. Long, sustained drives on offense like yesterday is the key going forward. We have a fantastic offensive line and elite skill players and depth on offense. Utilize all the backs and let the play clock wind as long as you can. By the 4th quarter, no team will want to tackle Martinez or Fletcher. I know everyone clowns the fizikal ball, but I really think its necessary with this defense.

Also because yall are never fair here and my wife is making me watch reality tv I’ll start some anarchy. Yall don’t kick in Kiko’s back nearly enough as yall should. They’re the same guy 😂

Zaquan starts, don’t be afraid to rotate meesh out. More 2/4 zone. Match zone no covering space.
Less “creative” blitzes that are easy to read. Drop out often.
SWITCHES.
No outside leverage with limited or no safety help.
Kiko blows, find him a towel boy gig.
Marriage of front/back end. Limit dumb plays like slant left and load left.

That’s all just a start

The easiest solution is to play Zay significantly more. There's no way he is worse than Harris, and if he is, might as well find out now, to where you can move on from him as a long term solution. This D is in desperate need of Brown coming back, because that would force Hill to the bench, where he belongs. That will make a ton of difference, even if Brown isn't fully healthy or in game shape early on. Schematically, I don't have an issue, because there's no way that the same scheme that worked so well last year, despite the O consistently putting them in terrible spots can regress like this.

Just some of my thoughts

Start ZP
better play calls on 1st down/obvious run down. Several times noticed stunts which leaves us vulnerable to big play on those running plays. Play more gap integrity on those downs
Play Kiko less in obvious passing downs unless you can man him with TE or sit him in a zone - when he’s iso against rb, he’s always out leveraged or dusted.
Like more quarters but can we instill more discipline in playing zone. Does anyone other than DP play zone the right way? To me, our dbs play zone by giving up too much cushion letting small plays turn into big plays or not keeping people in front of them and end the play with their back to the ball.
Do some disguised man into zone - very similar to what Georgia did last night to Texas. Most of our disguises is in terms of who is blitzing as opposed to coverage. Especially since our front four can typically create good pressure by themselves.

ditch the air raid offense, so the defense actually practices against stuff it'll see every saturday (sometimes friday).

but then our offense will suck.
