Few thoughts from a golden cane

Paul had 5, yes FIVE, rings as a cane. People forget he was the U’s General Counsel in addition to AD. He personally told me he loved Butch (“one of the finest men and coach I have ever known”), I did not because of his game day failures. He wanted Barry but felt compelled to listen to the players who came to him. That got us two more rings.

***SHOULD HAVE BEEN two more rings...

He treated Butch like sh*t at the end. That's undeniable.

Clappy destroyed UMs recruiting, and coaching staff. MFer was handed a Ferrari, and turned it into a Maverick...
THIS

When the endless debates about which HC destroyed UM’s program the most, Golden is the easy target and yes he’s right up there.

But in my book, it was always Coker I blamed the most. The talent and sheer dominance of our program in 2001 to our embarrassing incompetence by 2005 was sinful.

In just four years, that mother ****** train wrecked our program in ways we never could have imagined. After the Peach Bowl massacre, we were never the same.

His formative drinking years occurred in Montana. We're built different than you South Florida vagines.
Just because I went to Miami doesn’t make me one of them. I worked in the south Bronx in summers. i used to be able to drink differently. Why do you think I could still be standing and say Erickson looked wasted.

montana…. Gtfoh

Let’s not bypass the assistants who left after 02 and who they were replaced by.

I’ve vacillated over which drop off in talent was more damaging.

Either way it’s effed up and Butch deserved better but did Paul treat him like sh*t because Butch was flirting with the NFL or did Butch start putting out feelers because he was being treated like sh*t from Paul.

Just curious.
Butch's agent thought they had a deal done in the 11th hour...but that's when UM started the "Butch" would have to pay 90% of his buyout BS....and a plethora of other things...more $$$ for assistants, etc....Cleveland came with a 4yr 20 million dollar package laden with incentives, and Butch took Chuck (who also recieved a HUGE raise) and left for the Browns.

Thanks for the insights today brother! Love learning how things went down, was always a mystery.

Schiano left right before the 01 Sugar Bowl vs UF for Rutgers....and Butch promoted Pagano to DC for that game.
Just trying to make sure I have it right. For one reason or another, between 2001-2005 we lost the following coaches from our staff:

Butch
Pagano
Schiano
Soldy
Kehoe
Chud
Curtis Johnson
Stoops
Mario (left in 01, came back in 04)

Some earlier than others but it’s no wonder why our recruiting went to sh*t after these guys were gone. If we were rank the top 10 Cane recruiters of all time 60-70% (could be more) coached here between 2001-2005 🤯
