Fernando Mendoza

They have to fix the defense. Coaches, players… whatever it takes. If we can’t get someone in the portal, I’d rather take the lumps immediately with Nickel.
Honestly the fact that we passed on Mendoza who seemed like the easiest layup ever tells me they are definitely decently confident that a guy is still going to enter that they really like. Now itt's obviously a risk, cause they may not end up entering or choosing us. But to me it seems like the gameplan was/is to get a guy they deem Elite or just have the competition between Emory+Nickel and spend large surrounding them with talent.

Also I think this is the case because we are likely aware this is Dawsons final year as OC here before he moves on up to a HC somewhere, which leads me to think he's wanting to get a mercenary to ensure he gets top offers.

I'll wait to judge. But I do think we either need Qb this portal period or it's a Emory/Nickel comp. Spring Portal for Qb just doesn't sound appealing. Maybe a guy like Reece who can maybe be okay just in case since we'll only have 3 QBs on the roster. But that's about it.

It’s something else. A bunch of guys on here can’t separate the emotions of being a fan first. Emory, Mario, Ward/Restrepo opt outs…

Did it look like that against OSU?
Yes, I believe so. He broke his thumb during the Nebraska game (10/19), had surgery after the game to have 2 pins inserted, sat out the Washington game (10/26), and came back for MSU (11/2). I am not sure what his recovery period was supposed to be, but pretty certain it should have been more than under 2 weeks.

The picture I believe is the PU game (last regular season game). He did play fairly well in the second half of the season but definitely misfired on a few in the ND game.

Yeah, I think they’ll get a portal QB who’s a starter. Probably have a guy or two in mind who’s still playing. They must not have thought Mendoza was worth it. I was wrong in thinking Mendoza was only incrementally better than Emory. It’s not even close.

Yeah he got injured before the OSU game. I wanna say he missed the Washington game. It was around that time where they went with the 2nd string QB

im not. but the comprasion is unfair at this point.
Indiana went 1-8 in conference and 3-9 overall last year. Regardless of the schedule this year, they won 11 games as a first year head coach.

Mario inherited a Manny 7-5 team and won 5 games. Had the easiest schedule this year and still couldn’t maximize Cam.

How is it unfair? You are being obtuse.

I think Cignetti is a **** of a coach.

The thing Cignetti did is he brought 13 (mostly veteran) JMU players with him and most of his JMU coaching staff (including coordinators who have been with him for a long time). That gave him a very efficient operation with continuity in the form of players and coaches who knew his system and approach. Three of the JMU players (Ponds, Kamara, and Fisher) were All-Americans this year and all of the JMU guys were major contributors. So Cig hit the ground running and has never looked back.

Mario probably would have been better served by bringing a similar approach to UM. Instead, he started from scratch with almost all of his coaches and only brought a couple backup level players. Mix in Manny’s terrible roster, bad coaching hires, and some portal missteps and it’s been a much slower rebuild.

I am still a Mario supporter, but am not oblivious to his faults. And I can’t help but think Cignetti would’ve gone 12-0 with UM’s roster and his coaching staff.

All very good and fair points.

The issue I had was @nycane blatantly dismissing Cignetti and excusing Mario.

I mean last year everyone thought we didn't have a plan and got the best QB in CFB. So lets see how it plays out. IMO I think Nickel can be legit, and wouldn't mind rocking with him year 1 - as long as it meant we kept spending very big the rest of this portal and Spring Portal.

There's no guarantee Nickel is any better than Emory. The same people that recruited Emory recruited Nickel. I can't believe after today's game there are still people out there saying "roll with" what you've got at ANY position.

If they haven't shown anything this year then don't count on them showing anything next year. Nickel hasn't played a single snap of college football yet, he CAN'T be the plan if we're a serious program. Go get a serious QB, put Nickel in for some garbage time minutes here and there throughout the season, and if he shows something on the field, THEN maybe you think about rolling with him for the next season. Same with every other position.
