Fernando Mendoza

I just watched the first half of Cal vs Syracuse game to try to sell myself on Mendoza. He’s trash. So far he’s thrown two terrible picks, zero td’s, and taken a couple bad sacks. He’s a statue back there plus he’s indecisive. But he did go to Columbus though so we’ll probably take him
Besides that ... how did he look on the other plays?

This is looking like a certainty to me. I think he can throw for 3,000 assuming Mario can get more WRs. Kids got some things going for him.
1. A good completion percentage (68.7) last year.
2. He can do just enough scrambling to hurt you for 1st downs.
3. He throws a nice ball and looks down field.
4. Good size in the pocket to see over the trenches.
5. Multiple years he can start.
Assuming he get the Cam Ward 10 TD bump, we could see him get really close to 30 TDs.
He's a kid you have to surround with a bunch of talent. 7 win floor, 10 win ceiling.

Bring him in.

He is the best available option in the portal, and a better option for us than Emory (until proven otherwise).
He's played in 20 games, and has gone over 300 yards multiple times. He's safe with the ball. He's can really hurt you when he tucks and runs. He's played against all the same competition we play in the ACC. Hes a really good student that studies the offense hard. Seems like a lock.

Honestly, I want this 11th game this year, and 22 over the next 2. Then we will see what we are, and what we could be. If Mendoza can deliver on that, then weve done what weve needed to. I know everyone wanted their Microwaved Natty run this year, but outside of Cam, we didn't have the talent for it.

All that and he’s still better than Emory

He's clearly the young gang leader (played by Andy Garcia) trying to make a name for himself by kidnapping the Mayor's daughter in a 3-part story arc on Miami Vice.

I also immediately thought of Miami Vice. Mendoza is running drugs from Cuba on John Ruiz’s cigarette racing boats.

At worse case scenario you want to have a QB competition to push the starter to win the job. In addition, even though we had the best QB ever at our school we still only managed 10-2 with multiple near loses and dogfights. We need to be able to play complementary football. There’s not a Ward in the portal this year. We should have went after Arnold first. Mendoza is a cheaper option. We need to pull the trigger there and with the savings bring in some talent to help the defense.

Regardless, I’m not sure what the **** we’re doing as we seem to be moving at a turtle pace as Mario typically does. We were told we going to be aggressive in the portal to make up for our average recruiting class. So far that **** isn’t happening.

I watched Cam Ward 2nd quarter against VT. He threw a horrible pick, made some
Inaccurate throws. I expected better.

See how that works? Mendoza is a proven productive ACC QB that is on upward trajectory. Athletic 6'5 220 plus pound QB that ran for first down 20 times this season, while also throwing for over 3,000 yards in only 11 games.

Mendoza is not good. Do people not remember how he looked vs our terrible defense?

11/22 for 285

In that 285 he had completions of 57, 51, 66, & 56, all of which were **** poor defense and very short throws/screens.

I’d honestly rather roll with what we have and shore up the defense before going the route of Mendoza.

Go find a better QB than that.

True sophmore playing behind one of worst pass blocking OLs in the ACC. Best weapon is a TE.

Cam was a big part of the GT loss also

Mendoza would be very meh here, but there really aren't a bunch of game makers at QB this year in the portal. Mateer was the stud and then everybody else. Cam was great because he could extend plays and finish with a dazzling play. Our OL kept him upright, but he also saved them with his ability to move in the pocket. Mendoza fits in the category of TVD as far as pocket mobility, I don't think he is much better than Emory and if he's our choice the QB competition should be wide open and let the best guy be our starter. Open competition for all, I really like Nickel but we would be in serious trouble if our starting QB is a true freshman. We're just not good enough and we're not going to outscore teams who hang 30 to 40 points on us every week and to this point we really haven't addressed the defensive issues with this team. Right now we are a seriously inferior team compared to this past season. Buckle up boys, next year is going to be a bumpy ride!

Mendoza is right now, what we hope Emory will be.

Ask: Will Emory play better than what we have already seen Mendoza do? Probably not.

Mendoza gives you a floor of wins which is much higher than the Emory floor.

The upside for either is not super high but Emory is an unproven gamble while we know what Mendoza's floor is.
