Coaching Fan Fiction: Could Mario Have Won Natty w/ OhioTaint's Squad?

Day is a good coach, but he walked into an outstanding situation.

Ohio State 4 years prior to his arrival:
49-6

His first year as a head coach he had:

QB Justin Fields
RB JK Dobbins
WR Garrett Wilson
WR Chris Olave

DE-Chase Young-led nation in Sacks/TFL
LB-Malik Harrison
CB-Jeffrey Okudah

With that said we saw Mario and Day square off one time in the shoe when Mario took a less talented team and ran it down their throat, and ask Day how he liked it.

Day seems to have recovered just fine and just won the Natty. Mario finished this season the same way he did that season - by losing down the stretch.

He's a good coach, at least IMO with this championship. He's been there what, five or six years? There's always a learning curve and some get to it quicker, but give years is pretty **** good.

I know people get stuck on the 20 million dollar roster or whatever it is, but they've always had a top paid roster even prior to NIL. There's nothing new to see there.

People love to talk about his big game losses, in particular to Michigan. Well, there was a pretty good coach there until this season. Still, it's a rivalry game and as we should know with FSU, those are games where you throw out the record and anything can truly happen.

He's also lost to some pretty darn good coaches in big bowl games, national championship, etc. Where are the glaring unexpected losses? I decided to look up his record and he's got big late season losses to Dabo and Smart on the brink of NC's.

Biggest thing I think he and any coach has to deal with now is the ego, they've always had to do that but money makes it more difficult as they'll leave quicker now than ever. He's most certainly not a bad coach or even average.
You know the wild ****... If fans here made the same excuses for Mario that they make for all these other corches around the country it'd be pretty **** amusing around here. If it wasn't Napier year 1, it was norvell year 3. If it wasn't Deion whatever year, it's Ryan Day (or much more specifically chip Kelly). Coordinators run **** on Saturdays unless you're a coach brought in specifically for that purpose. Even if you are a head coach brought in specifically for that purpose(ala Ryan Day) if you don't win **** quick just ask Lincoln Riley (or Ryan Day)how that works... It's people that don't know the intricacies of the game that get caught up in the head coach arguments. A staff as a whole is what wins or loses. Not one man.

He thinks Mario is adjusting from the Michigan loss to roll through Tennessee, Oregon and Notre Dame when he did not adjust for 11 straight weeks - including being unable to stop Iowa State...

He doesn't know how to? Clueless as to offer anything different to coordinators

Sure he had best roster, most expensive, and lost at home to a 7 win Michigan team, BUT with expanded playoff he gets into the playoff.

Again year in and year out he has a top 3 roster. When you are in that position you should cash in once in a 6-7 year period.

He is a good coach, but Ohio State has been a machine for a long time. Theyve had 2 seasons last 20 years under double digit wins. Covid year went 7-1 played for title.

Weve had 2 double digit win seasons in 20 years.

Weve had 2 double digit win seasons in 20 years.
1. Expanded Playoff: The rules at the beginning of the season were the same for everyone. Day got in. Mario choked a 21-0 lead vs. Syracuse.

2. Rivalry Game: A close loss to a rival was an almost win on CIS a year ago.

3. Roster: Our roster was plenty rich, but we predictably did not do enough on Defense, and it cost us.

4. 10 Wins Seasons: The expectation for other Miami coaches was 10 wins. No reason to lower the bar for the highest paid coach, with the most resources and hype around his hire. It is completely unreasonable to scream 10 wins from the rooftops for a first time head coach, but allow 5, 6, 8 or 9 to be OK for a seasoned coach hailed for his success.

2025 -- Let's ******* win -- ACC - Expanded Playoff -- or bust.

Well of course a takes a village. Still, what's your point? OSU is always in a better position to win, but even if we were to assume that Mario or Day just let their assistants cook, well he's doing a better job of it, managing the team overall. There is no comparison between the two at this time. Coaches don't operate in a vacuum, but no other coach we've ever had has been given the same lattitude that Mario has and that's not even debatable.

You said one accurate thing. That's no other Miami coach has ever been gave these circumstances. The rest is bull****. You're all entitled to whatever opinions and I respect that. But if y'all just wanna blindly hate on our coach that much and **** pull every other coach that finally achieves any modicum of success around the country than feel free. I'll just sit the bench. Cause this ***** stupid as ****. Every single season the bar changes on here. If Guidry of last season shows up this season what's the complaint then? If Dawson of last season shows up this season what then? Each and every hire he's made WHEN HE MADE it was widely considered **** good hires with only backlash being gattis among the people who knew background. This is a stupid *** argument. I know tons of OSU people and coaches and all of them would tell you until chip Kelly came how they were viewed(other than Hartline)in their own fanbase. But I get it. Y'all got **** envy so every week it'll be something new. Cut it the **** out already. It's tiresome. Was Ryan Day a good coach before this season? You're not making an assumption by the way unless you're gonna fully commit to the hypocrites most people are on here. So you tell me. Does Mario let his assistants call the game OR did Mario and his PHYZICAL ball y'all complain to no end about just call the plays for the #1 offense in the country? Did Mario also call the plays for a pretty good defense & a underperforming offense last year? Just cut it the **** out. Y'all argue just for the sake of it at this point. ***** lame.
