Coaching Fan Fiction: Could Mario Have Won Natty w/ OhioTaint's Squad?

With Cam at Ohio St., Mario wins it all. With Howard, not so sure. Cristobal's FAR better than any of the coarches since Butch, but let's be real. We've witnessed major meltdowns on both sides of the ball during his tenure. We've also witnessed him being powerless to make any substantive in-season changes to right the ship. The season w/Cam was a huge, perhaps once in a lifetime opportunity missed. While there is an upward trajectory because of increased talent, it's hard for me to think of a coach as 'great' when there really isn't expertise on either side of the ball.
I wouldn't call Ryan Day a great coach, but certainly deserving of credit for a superior playoff run. Will Howard was certainly 'managed' into an improved version of himself (to what degree Chip Kelly deserves credit I don't know - but Day did hire him). Howard's completion % leaped to 73%, up from a previous high of 61%, while still being largely inconsistent over the middle(60%ish). Thus the managing. At this point Day, championship in hand, has scoreboard, and to me the losing streak to Michigan is generally understandable. Harbaugh, a great coach, indeed built a championship roster in his own right that has simply been more physical the last couple of meetings. The end of season Michigan was vastly improved imo. And the late season, cold weather timing of the game detracts from Ohio St.'s advantage in terms of explosiveness. Yes, Ohio St. fans have roundly criticized Day, but certainly there are many schools who would love to have his services. Ohio St. values it to the tune of around 11m per.

So are you now insinuating Ryan Day is a good coach? Clearly I'm talking to drunk you cause no way In **** you're sober... This is literally the same guy they debate yearly if it's time to fire cause he couldn't win any big games & Michigan owns him...

He's a good coach, at least IMO with this championship. He's been there what, five or six years? There's always a learning curve and some get to it quicker, but give years is pretty **** good.

I know people get stuck on the 20 million dollar roster or whatever it is, but they've always had a top paid roster even prior to NIL. There's nothing new to see there.

People love to talk about his big game losses, in particular to Michigan. Well, there was a pretty good coach there until this season. Still, it's a rivalry game and as we should know with FSU, those are games where you throw out the record and anything can truly happen.

He's also lost to some pretty darn good coaches in big bowl games, national championship, etc. Where are the glaring unexpected losses? I decided to look up his record and he's got big late season losses to Dabo and Smart on the brink of NC's.

Biggest thing I think he and any coach has to deal with now is the ego, they've always had to do that but money makes it more difficult as they'll leave quicker now than ever. He's most certainly not a bad coach or even average.

Mark Richt would have won more this year with the same roster. He would have throttled GT.

It amazes me how this board analyze who’s a coach vs. corch. It also amazes me the lengths ppl will go to defend absurd positions.

Let me be very clear; I hate OSU. I hate OSU right behind ND, UF, & FSU. With that said, I can be objective:

Ryan Day is an absolutely elite HC. U don’t get to have the 3rd highest win% in FBS history being mediocre. The guy is 70-10 or .875 as a coach, yet ppl r still ?ing him. His worst loss came this yr against an 8-5 UofM team.

His 10 losses are:
-#3 Clemson in the CFP
-#1 Bama in the Nat’l Title Championship game
-#12 UO
-#5 UofM
-#3 UofM
-#1 UGA in the CFP
-#3 UofM
-#9 Mizzou in a NY6
-#3 UO
-8-5 UofM

10 total losses in 6 yrs to teams w/ a combined record of 124-16 (.886 win%).

I’m not sure why this board has an infatuation of trying to call coaches w/ high win% corches, b/c there’s a mirror on the other side of that glass house if u want to go down that rabbit hole.

Does he get Chip Kelly and Jim Knowles?
No. Mario hired Steele the same offseason Knowles was available.

Nope - can't use the Knowles was hired one day after Mario started because ya'll told me Mario lost to Utah because he mailed it in to focus on the Miami job...
