Eye-opening stat on the running game

We are stalling out in the red zone more and more. We lost to GT because of it and it made the Wake game close. We were scoring all day every day early in the season. It’s the biggest difference between close and blow out
A lot of it is playcalling and the other part is Cam holding the ball too long. Simplify things a bit with more runs and high % passes. The RZ is where Arroyo & Lofton should shine the most.

Who would have thought out of all the coaches Cristobal would build the most dominant offense we ever had given all the offensive concerns some had about him before being the coach at Miami.
Some here will never acknowledge or give him credit for that....it's really weird IMO

OK....

And?

1. Our first four games were against crappy non-conference opponents Florida, USF, FAMU, and Balls State. Now, if we could get those four outcomes over 12 games, we wouldn't be having this conversation.

2. Guys get dinged up throughout the season and play hurt. We may not get the same outcome across every game of the season.

3. Opponents get film on us. They start to figure out what another team did to achieve some success defending Miami, and then they try to repeat it for a whole game.

4. We have punted the ball 21 times in 11 games. I get it, we probably won't be punting (on average) ONE TIME PER GAME for an entire season, like we did over the first four games. But still.

We aren't well balanced. Lately we are running more effectively but many of our "balanced" stat games involve runs in garbage time.

This is the one that really sticks out to me that I put in the stat roll thread every week:

We allow 2.00 sacks per game. A sack is also counted as a tackle for loss.

We allow a TOTAL of 3.8 tackles for loss per game. Which is good for 9th in the entire country.

So what does that tell you? Cam gets sacked twice a game. On every single other play, we only average getting tackled behind the LOS 1.8 times per game. That's it. When we run the ball, or we throw short passes, we only get tackled behind the line 1.8 times a game.

Another way to look at it is, yes, we're 9th in the country in TFLs allowed, which is amazing. But it's not #1. So who are the 8 that are above us? Remember again, a sack is a TFL. So here are the 8 teams ahead of us in TFLs allowed, and where they rank in sacks allowed per game.

New Mexico - #2
Army - #1
Navy - #6
Penn State - #10
Ohio State - #16
Louisiana-Lafayette - #22
Baylor - #32
Oregon - #7

Miami is 67th in the country in sacks allowed per game.

Again, what does this tell you? It tells me that Miami is very likely THE BEST team in the entire country in not allowing tackles for loss on non-sacks. Look at all of the teams above us in TFLs allowed. They ALL are much higher than us in sacks allowed, so all the TFLs they do allow are on runs and short passes, not sprinkled with sacks like us. This is HUGE for 3rd down percentage as well, we stay ahead of the sticks and don't take negative plays. The result? Miami is now 55.92% on 3rd downs, which is the 3rd best mark of any team in the last 9 seasons (COVID year excluded).

There is no better team in America at avoiding negative runs than The University of Miami.

And we have the best quarterback in the country.

That's a recipe for a **** good offense.

A Line Yard(LY) is an advanced stat crediting the OLine with Yards Per Carry. Formal definition is: portion of rushes that are credited to the work of the offensive line, rather than the rusher and is 1.2 x yards stuffed runs/TFL, 1.0 x yards 0-4, 0.5x( yards gained - 4). So, a 10 yard gain would be 4 + .5 x (10-4) = 7 LY and a five yard loss would be -6 LY. Defense is what the opposing team's LY are.

Miami is top 3 Net Line Yards (comparing your Offense and Defense average) along with UCF, PSU, Tenn. It should be noted that 3 of the top 4 are in line for the CFP and aTm would have been if they hadn't lost to Auburn who is in the top 5. All praise to Cristobal.

I do wonder how that running up the gut would work against good teams. It seems to wear out all the teams we've played thus far provided we get enough offensive plays. While I'd like to see more runs like Lyle had Saturday, there is no doubt that they are effective if given the carries. I think the wonder is if we can be even more successful with a little more creativity because of course our backs are very talented.

Against good competition that last several years we have ran the ball pretty well regardless of who we have played and that goes back to 22/23 Texas A&M, Clemson 2023 , uf 2024 and a some of the more other talented teams we’ve played

If Cam would take more check downs at times, we'd be unstoppable.
Martinez is an absolute monster as pass receiver out of the backfield. I have yet to see him be stopped for a minimal gain. Maybe 4 yard gain is the lowest. I don't know why Cam doesn't hit him and hit him early when he's open. He makes people miss and breaks tackles and has the knack of falling forward when tackled.

The only legitimate complaint about the offense are the second-quarter third-quarter lulls they seem to get in.

Red Zone TD % has dropped off a bit over the last 3 games: (non-garbage time only & FAMU excluded) 75% non-conference play/77% all-ACC games/88% first 4 ACC/64% last 3 ACC.

But I think the bigger issue is that our TD % when we scrimmage from inside plus territory has dropped off a lot more: 79% non-conference play/58% all-ACC games/67% first 3 ACC/52% last 4 ACC.

We only scrimmaged from the redzone on 2 drives against GT, with 1 TD and 1 turnover on downs, but we scrimmaged in plus territory on 7 drives and only got 2 TDs, which was the first time we converted TDs on 50% or less of plus territory drives this year. Against Wake we were at 50% (4/8)

In a surprising twist, Miami is 14th in total defense in the nation. How does that happen?? 1st in the ACC in total defense as well.

Stats don't look that bad when a team takes 20 plays to score a touchdown. Kills a lot of clock and limits overall possessions as opposed to giving up an 80 yard touchdown and making things a shootout. Teams are sitting on the ball to keep our offense off the field.

We did really well in our cupcake games famu, ball st., UF, etc.. when adjusted for conference games it's a different story..

Hopefully wake game is what we see down the stretch
