taken from a great article on Pete Carroll with Quotes from Tony Dungy highlight their defensive philosophy.

"Carroll, like Dungy, prefers not to two-gap. The problem isn’t the theory — a potential two-for-one where a single defender can clog up two running lanes is a great deal for the defense — but rather that two-gapping too often results in hesitant defensive linemen who try to read and react and thus fail to disrupt the offense."

“When you put a defensive lineman in a gap and tell him he has to control the gap, he can play very aggressively,” Carroll said at a coaching clinic.

“We want to be an attacking, aggressive football team,” he said at another clinic. “We don’t want to sit and read the play like you often have to with two-gap principles of play.”

Dammit man i hope golden changes this isssh

How are our coaches not realizing this? The talent is there. Make some changes and adjustments. Sheeeeeeeeeeeet.

Reminds me of the Wake Forest game with gaping splits between lineman, it was really an insult to Dorito. Their offensive coordinator figured he was too rigid to ever shoot the gap.

That article is worth a read when you see how Seattle's pass defense is 1st in the league. And all they are running is cover-3 press not giving up any easy throws...its mind blowing, how we run cover 4 cushion giving up 8 yards per.

that was ALMOST more frustrating than louisville, duke, and vtech...almost lol.

for a team to come out with that rinky dink BS that wake did and we didnt even TRY to blitz is a joke

Or the fact that we would blitz on 3rd and long an obvious blitzing situation and get burned for a screen. but on first and second down we were happy to "rush" 3 with guys standing around lost.

Although Carroll used bits of that system with New England, he never got it fully up and running, and it was simply too much for college players, even the very talented ones at USC. “I was the defensive coordinator and putting the whole thing together [at USC], but our guys just couldn’t handle it,” said Carroll. “It was just too much stuff, and it was too much for the coaches.”

OMG

is this real life???? an NFL coach on the verge of going to the super bowl LITERALLY ECHOES WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SAYING...yet golden says we are trending in the right direction

Seattle runs Cover 3 principles too! You can run a Cover 3 zone AND play a one-gap 4-3. It can be done! And it's dominant! **** it man

I know I have given this forum s*** about keeping coaches around for stability and I will admit that you guys were dead right on this situation. I can definitely understand the frustration. I am now starting to see the light. I just hope Golden does as well. Donofrio is running/has run out of time. Since he's here, I will concede that 1 more year is tops. This defense needs to make strides or else GTFO.

He also said this, in the very same article.

“To be successful on defense, you need to develop a philosophy,” Carroll said at a coaching clinic while still at USC. “If you don’t have a clear view of your philosophy, you will be floundering all over the place. If you win, it will be pure luck.”

Our coaches not only have their philosophy, but a clear view of it as well. Now that philosophy doesn't lend itself all that well to instant results (eventhough they did alright with the most talented/experienced D we've had since their arrival), but going by the information we have (their track record at temple).. it not only works, but it provides good results long term.. and that's not even counting that they have access to much better talent here.

Dorito needs to spend two weeks before spring practice in Seattle with Pete to learn a thing or two about defense.

The kids already said he takes no suggestions. They are going to continue with it until they are fired. Anybody with any football knowledge could tell Golden these things. Its not rocket science. They vigorously defend it and those who blindly follow do as well. Im resigned to watch it play out. Which if no changes are made will result in their firing. 100%

Fired! You are correct, Sir. You don't have to be the Great Karnak to see it coming in a year or two.
