I think we should bring in a portal QB. I just tihnk Emory will win the job.Our qb will be from the portal in my opinion.
But either way we would be in good shape.

If there's a great target worth the NIL that is a clear and significant upgrade over Emory. If not, better to spend the NIL on filling more spots of need in the portal and recruiting top HS players. I'd be comfortable going with Emory barring another Ward or Gabriel level transfer being available. He made some nice throws. He’s really making progress. Still not sure we don’t go after another portal quarterback next year but he is definitely making strides.
For Emory, maybe a Ryan Finley comparison. Tall but average at best arm. Good accuracy and timing, not a great runner but athletic enough to run effectively when necessary. Gritty leader. Finley flamed out in the pros, but was a very effective college QB.I also compared Cam Ward to Charlie Ward. Do you have a problem with that too since he’s even older than Danny Wuerfel? Maybe I did that ibecause I’m old not because I cant find somebody more up to date to compare him to.
It's hard to believe teams can just go to the portal for a Heisman caliber QB every year. Most of what makes Cam great is what's between his ears. If Emory has it, that's the most important thing. I mean, what do you do if the kid plays 4 games, throws for 500 yards and 6 TDs, 75% with 1 Int, plus the team sees him as the natural replacement. It's gonna be an interesting developing story as the season goes on.McCarthy is exponentially more athletic than Emory. His ability to run was key in at least one of their playoff games (blanking on which one, but they were backed up on their own goal line and he ripped off a decent run, and was a good passer on the run as well)
And I mean, obviously if we can see into the future and Emory takes us to back to backs playoffs sign me up. But I just don’t see it. Have never seen it. I think he’d need the rest of the team to absolutely dominate, and that just doesn’t happen every week. Eventually you run into a defensive line that can generate pressure, and then you look like Oklahoma when they had Bradford and ran into SEC teams.
And if you can’t parlay what is looking like a Heisman contention and draft stock raising season into another elite transfer, what are we doing.
There’s a massive gulf between heisman caliber qb and Emory. I’m not saying we will get a Cam level player. ****, we may never again. But I don’t really care about what kind of stats a backup puts up at the end of blowouts. It’s just a matter of eye test and also just not thinking that style of qb is going to give you a championship ceiling, especially when it’s not like we can skate through an ACC schedule and then have one game for the title. You’ll have to beat at least 3 playoff teams, and I don’t see a game manager doing that. It's hard to believe teams can just go to the portal for a Heisman caliber QB every year. Can Ward wasn’t a Heisman qb at WSU. The selling point going forward should be “ look at what you can do when you come here and being surrounded by great talent with an OL to protect you”. There’s a reason a lot of non Cane fans thought this take was risky. All u heard was the turnovers but a lot of those turnovers was him trying to be Superman, making up for the talent disadvantage. Ward pulling guys up . At Miami you won’t be doing that , it’s just playing your game while teammates pull their weight. Guys should be lining up to play here. It’ll just be choosing the right piece. It's hard to believe teams can just go to the portal for a Heisman caliber QB every year. Most of what makes Cam great is what's between his ears. He wasn’t but I fully believed he was a top 5 qb and should’ve been a top 10 pick in the draft from a talent perspective. Context matters so much, and his supporting cast was BAD relative to the competition they were playing. But he jumped off the screen from day 1 imoCan was nowhere near a Heisman qb at WSU. It’s crazy how much better you look when you have all day to pass and a huge upgrade at skill players surrounding you. He went Gronk being a good college to a great college qb. Ward and Miami have been a great marriage for each other.
I think it’s time for the tough conversation. Has Wards time come to an end early and should we just pull the band aid off , going with the hot guy in Emory? I mean he did go 11-12 with one being a drop. He should have a 100 percent completion percentage. If you have access to the All22 for both Miami QBs, you may come away curious if 17 should at least get *some practice reps* with the 1s. Very difficult to build rapport with the starters if you don’t throw the ball to them.
I wouldn’t personally rotate 1 and 17 every few series v USF, but we may start to see a discussion around this in the coming weeks. After Saturday keeping 17 out of the portal just became a higher priority than any of us thought.
For those in the know, has CMC every used a 2 QB system?
Hey, ever heard of Alan Bowman? Heard the guy is pretty good.Love how everyone has to find comps for him from 2-3 decades ago because nobody has been successful with a statue qb with a weak arm since then. Emory should never enter a season as a starter here.
Dude was a true freshman thrown into the lions den against the two toughest teams last year with no prior game reps and people want to label him based off that. He displayed high IQ with the intangibles you look for and he won teammates over with his grit and going out on his shield cemented him as a team favorite. If he can continue to develop his physical abilities even a little, his teammates will always have his back.I don’t think anyone is saying start Emory next year but more he looked very good. He showed great accuracy , anticipation and control of the offense .
For him to play qb in today’s football he’ll need the intangibles and tangibles he does have. His smarts and work ethic are top shelf. But he’ll need to have elite accuracy , anticipation , touch and a quick release to make up for not having prototypical arm strength with athletic ability. “ If “ he were to be the qb we’ll have great skill guys and OL which is always a good recipe.
That said coaches think a lot more of him than most fans and teammates love him. They believe there’s potential for him being a future starter. I guess we’ll see .
agree on the 1st part, but not the 2nd, while he be the starter next year, we will be looking to upgrade in portalIf Cam has a long term injury I expect Emory to start in his place. He is clearly the 2nd best QB on this team.
I also expect Emory to be the starter next season. Like Dawson told us last year, Emory is made to play QB.
The problem I see with Emory, is what happens when guys aren't open? With Ward it's fine, he just scrambles and resets the board in his favor. For Emory to be elite, I think Miami needs a 1400 yard, 15 TD running back.Dude was a true freshman thrown into the lions den against the two toughest teams last year with no prior game reps and people want to label him based off that. For those talking about his athletic-ness, is he Cam Ward? No. But Dawson’s system doesn’t require you to be if you can make the reads and get the ball to your playmakers in space. Last night he showed improvement in arm strength/velocity. That’s a big step.
I’m all for going to the portal and see if we bag another Heisman winner. But I think it might be harder than we think to find someone who will come in and be the unquestioned starter next year ahead of EW, who will have 2.5 years in the system.
Who are the candidates? Back channeling season is upon us, yes?
11/12 is not bad at all. On his touchdown it looked like he was told to throw the ball somewhere but couldn't pass up the easy 6. Loved it.
Chad Pennington didn’t have a strong arm at all, but his anticipation covered that and made him really good to elite. He doesn’t have a rocket arm but his touch and anticipation reminds me of Danny Wuerfel. I think it’s pretty obvious who’s the better backup and who’d play if a catastrophe happened.
IDK man I thought Bobby Washington looked decent at linebacker. I’d leave him there for now but I’m no coachIf you have access to the All22 for both Miami QBs, you may come away curious if 17 should at least get *some practice reps* with the 1s. I would say just let the best man win. If we can find another QB in the portal that is better than EW, then that is who we should play. That option is not always available. EW has shown some great leadership skills. He has not shown the physical skills to this point but if coaches like him best next year then we will find out really quick whether or not he can be the next Dorsey.I… think people are very clearly saying that.
I think Mario is working to ensure that the line is always top notch (we are lacking depth and I think that will impact who we go after in recruiting). He’s also developing a good stable of rbs. The only thing missing is a bit more creativity in the run game alignments and possibly including some motion or sweeps. That will help Emory alot next year if he is the guy.The problem I see with Emory, is what happens when guys aren't open? With Ward it's fine, he just scrambles and resets the board in his favor.
