Duke about to hire Manny - update: hired

I'm happy for Manny getting a 2nd chance at a HC gig. He got his self-described dream job coaching the Canes far too early - that was Flake James' fault. It was a dumb move when we made it. I think he's probably grown enough to where the Duke job won't be as challenging for him as Miami was.

Wish him well against everyone except us.

Gonna say his second go round as HC will be better than his first, just because that's pretty much how life works

I think this is correct. UM is not a job for a first time HC, especially when it's a program that has been down for almost two decades. He needed to learn how to be a HC at a school like Temple where he wouldn't have such a spotlight on him. I think he did some good things at UM. Haters want to downplay his decision to go from pro-style to a spread offense and say it was the obvious move. It wasn't obvious enough for every coach before that or even Mark Richt.

He wasn't an ace recruiter, but he doesn't personally have to be if he surrounds himself with recruiters. I think he recognized his recruiting needed to improve which is why he brought in recruiters like T-Rob and tried to get Travis Williams for LB coach (I think he hired him but T-Will took another job shortly thereafter).

He also managed to bring in one of the best dual threat QBs in the country coming off one of the worst offensive season under Enos. And he turned 3 star Rosseau, who other programs were looking at as a WR or Safety, into a 1st round pick at DE. Fans are rightfully lauding Cristobal for finding 4 star Bain who is a 5 star, but Diaz did something similar. And Diaz convinced Jalen Phillips (who was medically retired from college football) to give it another go - and he also became a first round pick. So he wasnt too bad at landing DEs.

Ultimately he shouldn't have been hired in the first place, but he was. Didn't work out, but I think you have to be a real salty ***** to hate on a first time HC for making rookie mistakes.

Best of luck to the man unless it affects us. Holy **** though if he beats Mario in his first year. Even worse if it's a a downpour and they bust out the slip and slide routine. That's a tough place to win so I'm not expecting much.

StatePenn folks taking Diaz's departure hard.

Fair post. I can concur with 98.45% of it.

This is college football baby. Everyone's a salty btch. Definitely not giving any man an excuse first time coach or grey bearded vet.

He interviewed, he sold himself like he could do the job, so he takes what comes with it. Success/praise or failure/criticism, alike.

He got people to forget that he can’t recruit for **** and eventually when he has his own players his scheme gets worked.

There wasn't really any competition. He didn't need to sell himself, the UM braintrust predetermined he was going to be the continuity from Mark Richt. What was he supposed to do, tell UM he'd rather be HC at Temple than at his dream job?

Good luck to Manny. This is a good job for him. If he does well he will get a bigger opportunity. UM as his first head coaching job was a ridiculous mistake by UM not Manny.

I was Manny's biggest detractor for the Miami job, but I thought hiring him at Temple was a good idea for the Owls.
I think had he gone from Temple to Duke his career arc would've made sense, but:

Good for Manny! Glad to see him getting another HC opportunity. No way Mario will ever lose to Duke now…

As far as College??.. No... Someone mentioned Coker... But...Howard left to the USFL then other stops as HC... Jimmy to the Cowboys... Dennis to wherever he went , I forget... Butch to the Browns...
It's just the more recent (recent meaning the past 20 years) guys since Coker...
I took it as fired HC such as Coker, Shannon and Diaz

Just forgot Coker
Shoulda clarified, my bad. Former HC's of the last two decades. (Coker was almost starting a program and head coach yes?)
