DT Tywone Malone enters Portal

I’m with you on the whole “Mario is bad at the portal” narrative. It’s pathetically incorrect.

Now here’s my current issue: they’re operating too slowly. They’re being meticulous and scrutinizing over every little detail that before you know it, the kid is receiving interest elsewhere. Or, we’re not shelling out NIL because we’re scared to overpay players. What’s the money good for then? Where’s the Cormani or Rashada money?

Well guess what? We’re not Alabama or UGA or Texas. We don’t have the luxury to swoop in last minute. We need to be on these evals immediately. USC is doing it right too…Mario wants to build from the ground up and take guys that won’t impede his high school recruiting classes’s growth…that’s so Dabo. You add talent everywhere and whenever possible.

Demetrius Hill is in our backyard. Canady and Richard are literally right there as immediate DB2 adds (and very good ones). You want speed at WR? Hudson is trending to SMU lol. You want another pass rusher that looks and operates like Rousseau? Geer from ‘Cuse just hit. You want another linebacker? Hart Jr. Is a perfect fit.

I could go on and on, but we’ve got to pick up the pace.
While Mario is "analyzing" others are signing. He is trying to decide if he wants JayLo or Penelope Cruz and end up with Rosie O'Donnell.

While I'm not a DiMare fan at all, I'm guessing he can't or shouldn't have contact w/ a player that's still participating in his current school's season. Football portal entry or not. Maybe I'm wrong for thinking this.
Not familiar with the specifics of the "portal vs attendance at a university". But if you enter the transfer portal for football are you not then "out" as far as participating in any sports at that university?

And Brown who is anchoring one side. And Mesidor and Parish the year prior. All high quality football players.

This narrative we suck in the portal is bull****. Most portal guys around the country are contributors at best. We have at least 6 front line starters and they are far better than the current upper classmen Diaz recruited.
CIS is going to CIS.

Apparently you can finish participating as he's still on the baseball team at Ole Miss. Haven't heard anything to the contrary.

Like I said he will not be the starter after fall. 🤷‍♂️
Gotta ask…

Is Chaney a personal friend? Is this a Belen vs. CCHS thing?

You chime in anytime there is a debate on Chaney’s health or who should start, etc.?

Just curious.

I believe Chaney is the most talented running back on the team, but he hasn’t done anything when the band is playing that would cause me to proclaim him the starter or provide me with confidence that he will finish the year injury-free.

Disagree. Most of the negative comments are about how bad Cristobal is in the portal generally speaking. We just named 6 quality upgrades who start.
Man ... go back to last Spring and look at Gator Tears threads. The Gators were on suicide watch after Mario's repeated victories signing portal guys that THEY were after. Everybody in college football was commenting on "Mario / Ruiz" signing portal kids ... whoever they wanted. Big change to the current cycle.

I could go on and on, but we’ve got to pick up the pace and have a sense of urgency. There are players out there than can turn this current roster into a 9-win squad.

At this current notion of thinking, I’m afraid we’re always a day late and a dollar short (literally). That leads you to 6-6 or 7-5, when you could be 8-4/9-3 and literally walk into a top 5 class in 2024.
Sense of urgency? How are you gauging this? Because a kid claims he has an offer? Because no spring portal commits right now?

Who gives a **** if Hill is in our backyard if he has zero interest to come to Miami. He is not beating out Kam. Maybe he beats out Williams. Why platoon at best. Maybe he is looking for a huge NIL deal. Who knows his motivations other than him?

As for Hudson, let's see. A Garland, TX kid who got little burn at TCU wants to stay in the Dallas Metroplex. I'm shocked.

As for Geer, who knows? A decent contributor with 3.5 sacks as he enters his 3rd year. The dude has been in the portal for what a cup of coffee? Maybe he wants to go back to South Carolina. Does he have an ounce of interest in Miami? Why would you assume we did or did not reach out?

Kids have to have an interest in Miami. They also have to be a very good cultural fit. Last thing Miami needs are locker room cancers. A lot of the portal kids are really disgruntled guys who have been beaten out or are not moving up the roster.

You think a kid like Bear was ever going to be a good cultural fit in our locker room? The kid went to 4 high schools and just transferred into his 2nd college after 1 year at Georgia.

Never mentioned Bear at all, for that reason. But if you think all those kids are “locker room problems”, then idk what to tell you. That’s just deflecting from the main point.

As for the interest part, maybe we should show some ourselves. Maybe the hot chick you thought you had zero chance with is secretly into you. Never know unless you speak up, before you settle with the mid chick like Davis at DB.

Who gives a ****?

All I know Mesidor, Parrish, Davante Brown, Mauigoa, Cohen and Lee are all high-quality starters. Porter had a very good spring is going to start at nickel. Deen is going very good for us when he is available to go this fall.

Point is NOBODY was criticizing Mario's portal recruiting a year ago .... he killed it in 2022. There is concern NOW for the lack of signings so far in THIS window.

This is 100% false. The 2022 haul was garbage, the 2023 haul is much much better. The problem is that we have a ton of holes to plug and many haven’t been either addressed at all or only partially. The frustration is that time is running out and even guys we thought haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

Ehhh Mario himself said we should’ve done more in the portal last year. Missing on Verse, not landing any receiver help (other than Colbie), not bringing in another scholarship running back, bringing in multiple Oregon OL who are unplayable, etc. there was a lot to be desired with how we managed the portal last year.

It's not a good idea to take a guy just for the the sake of taking a guy. If you replace a JAG with a JAG there is no benefit. It only makes sense to take someone if they are a clear upgrade to what you currently have. Plus when you take a guy in the portal you are hoping/expecting immediate contribution. There are a ton of guys currently in the portal who have issues. Could be underperformance, grades, injury, character issues or unrealistic NIL expectations.

Bull****, they were during the season and thereafter. Maybe you weren't, but I am not sure why you feel compelled to be the mopes champion here.
Not being the "mopes" champion ... to the contrary. Maybe we missed on some guys ... especially WR due to the 'perception' that Mario was not QB / WR friendly with his offense (ouch ... Gattis!!), but I thoroughly enjoyed the Gator suffering and that is what I recall more than anything .. .major portal victories in 2022.

Maybe

I just know what I see and when he's healthy he's different. So I guess we will see in the fall if I'm right.

You're both right. We have done some good work in the portal, but we also need additional guys. Our starting lineup is highly uneven right now (OL solid, WR bereft, CB totally muddy after Devonte), and depth at certain positions (S, RB) is nonexistent.
