Do you guys think our D can take off?

Here are our stats vs ACC teams:

Scoring defense - 121st
YPG allowed -- 84th
YPP allowed -- 110th
Passer Rating allowed -- 84th
YPA allowed -- 75th
Passing YPG allowed -- 106th
Yards per rush allowed -- 101st
3rd downs allowed -- 61st

Definitely not a top 40 defense. Actually nowhere close to one. I wish we were, that would make watching these games a lot less stressful
I'm gonna have to ask you to show your work.

Louisville (#17 total offense) was 3-12 on 3rd down against our D.
Cal (#86) was 2-10.
VT (#65) was 9-14.

Texas has the #1 defense in the country. They're ranked in the top 10 in seven defensive categories.

Bama (#46 total offense) was 6-17 on 3rd down against their D.
OU (#128) was 4-15.
Miss St (#77) was 8-17.

We have objectively played against better offenses in conference play than Texas has (total offense average rank: #83 for Tex, #49 for us) yet they are better than us by just 5 percentage points (.36 vs .41) on 3rd down. Based on the current national rankings, that puts us 25 spots below them.

Is it likely that everyone, including the best defensive teams in the country, perform worse against better teams?

Nah, we're just exceptionally bad right?

You weren’t watching the same games I was the last three games if you think our defense was anything but putrid.

See now you're just throwing crap at the wall. You have nothing to back up your assessment besides your emotional reaction to the past 12 quarters of CANES football.

Let me ask you a question.

How many teams in the P4 do you think wouldn't trade their defense for ours?

They've taken off the last 3 games for crying out loud. How about they actually show up for a change?

I watch more CFB than probably 90% of the general public. This fanbase suffers from a serious lack of perspective.

Our weakness is obviously our pass D. That's not up for debate. It's obvious. However, we're top 30 in (6.3) yards per attempt which IMO is a good indicator of how well we perform play-to-play. That's better than Georgia (6.56), osu (6.47) and Clemson (6.44).

Cal averaged 12.3 yards per attempt against our D (terrible), but they only completed 12 of 24 passes, and they averaged 2.9 yards per rush against our D. When shut them down on three straight drives in the 4th quarter when our backs were against the wall.

Louisville averaged 6.7 yards per pass attempt against our D, and 5 ypr on ground, but 40% of their rushing yards came on one 43 yard run in the 1st quarter. After that, they averaged 3.1. Here's the thing, they average 8.5 yards per pass attempt and 5.3 yards per rush on the season.

I could go on, but the bottom line is we're not that bad on D. We need to tackle better and get to the QB. We can do both of those things. So yes I think our D can take off.
Well said.

Clearly the issue is mental mistakes surrendering explosive plays. Improved tackling and reducing these mistakes by even 50% would be a MAJOR improvement.

With Ruben back and the back end getting experience, do you think our D can take off or are we just LSU 2019 and going to win it with the O?
How about Simeon pushing Cam for the Scat Packs too? Funny ****.

Nah. But I do think that Guidry shouldn’t be blitzing as much. Let the 4 DL go to work and play coverage. Bend but don’t break style. If he can just limit explosive plays they will be improved enough to take us far

Your orange and green goggles are too tight there bud.

Cal and Louisville both had season high points and Louisville had season high passing yards. Are you high?

This is the worst defense that we have seen here in a long time. Opposing ACC offenses have been scoring at will. If you can’t see that and base our defense performance based solely off of 3rd down success rate? I don’t know what to tell you.

3rd down success tells you absolutely nothing about how a defense actually did other than what happened on 3rd downs…
Louisville was also, what? 4 for 4 on 4th down? What’s does that tell you about our defense?

Agree, I don't think we should be counting FAMU results,. or even Ball State and USF. Now that we're in conference play and our opponents have a lot of film on our players, they either get better or get smoked. My expectation is they'll get better but not enough to be a top 30 defense.
Playing FSU, Duke and Wake will help our numbers.
Now,….GT and ‘Cuse on the road?…

Stats can be misleading.
Cal had 12 first downs against us.
Unfortunately, 5 (?) of those went for more than 40 yards.

I went with 3rd down rate because your post had us at 61st. I don't know where you got that from. Which is why I asked you to show your work.

You replied with the old O&G glasses cliche and suggested I might be high.

Then you followed that up with "this is the worst defense we have seen here in a long time".

Here are the facts:

Our defense is ranked above Georgia, Penn St, Oregon, osu, Alabama and Clemson on 3rd down. Here's where you can find that:

In 2022, just two years ago (ancient history I guess) we gave up 40 points FIVE times...including to Directional Tennessee and Duke.

Unless you want to stop throwing crap against the wall and replying with histrionics I think I'm done debating you.

Louisville game special teams cost Miami two TD's. Fumble cost the defense a short field for another TD. If the defense can cut the couple of mental mistakes chunk plays by a third or half the defense will be fine. Too many blown assignments is the problem.
