Defensive End Battle

Look at this in a different angle...If the NFL draft was tomorrow do you think Chick would be drafted ahead of McCord, AQM, Kamalu, or even Thomas? Good freshman year was all there is to talk about...Last few years have been a slow regression to possibly being picked up by the CFL..

This post is beyond awful. For starters, Kamalu, as a RSJR, is the only guy there besides Chick who has been out of hs a full three years and could even be draft eligible. Completely ignoring that though, you're claiming guys who have seen fewer snaps than Chick combined would be drafted ahead of him? What would that be based on?

Yet another indication of just how devoid of talent we have been on the DL for going on 8 years. When Chickillo, a consensus 4-5* AA recruit is being beat out as a senior by a junior, true sophmore and juco transfer when all except McCord lack a full year of college strength and conditioning is pathetic.

This staff ruined Chickillo's career. He belongs at 255lbs tops, playing in a 4-3 scheme. He has literally no future as a 3-4 DE. Gotta commend the kid for doing all that is asked of him.

Maybe he was just overrated. With the same set of players, how would you have handled Chick?

Chick is a good ball player. He played hurt last season. He's been asked to dance for two downs and then often times they take him out on third down so it's hard for me to be upset with the kid. We'll see how our ballers do having to go full a series of downs rather than just situationally on third down.

I do agree though that Golden preferences seniors, but many old school coaches do that - Joe Paterno most notably - so that's not a surprise to me.

I'm pretty sure his post addressed how he would have used Chick.

I am as big a fan of Quan and McCord as anyone but I swear half the people on this board didn't watch them play last year, other than the few highlights McCord had

Was thinking based on the whole group of players at the time, how would he have aligned the grouping instead of having Chick gain and move.

Anybody that knows me from the boards can tell you that i thought Chickillo was slightly overrated from day one. I thought that he lacked "bend" and explosiveness. However, he was a good player who could set an edge and made plays off technique and hustle.

He's barely productive at this point.

none of the DL are productive at this point to be fair.

the scheme is dogshyt

3-4 DE is looking about 280lbs

A 4-3 DE is between 240-260

I dont expect Joe Blow computer QB to know the difference between what is expect from a 3-4 2 gapper or 4-3 single gap DE, just trust when they say chick would have been exponentially better as a 4-3 DE

Jethro Franklin
Franklin returned to Fresno State to coach the defensive line from 1991–1998, this term included a pair of NFL coaching fellowships, working with the Buffalo Bills in the summer of 1994 and the Cleveland Browns in the summer of 1995. In 1999 he coached the interior defensive line for UCLA. He then served as Defensive Line Coach for the Green Bay Packers from 2000–2004, USC for the 2005 season, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for 2006 season, and the Houston Texans from 2007-2008 before returning to USC as the defensive line coach in 2009.[1] He moved to coach the Defensive line at Temple Owls in 2010 and moved again in 2011 with Al Golden who had been hired to coach the Miami Hurricanes, as coach of the Defensive line and current is there.

I think the staff did Chick a favor.

Him playing 4-3 DE at 255 is a waste! He's not a pash rusher. He's a technique guy ... Effort guy. Nothing about his athleticism is special. He's not overly fast, quick, or strong. So, the staff beefed him up, allows him to work his effort and technique, and tries to let him pass rush against guards.

Ideally, IMO, Chick should be a RS-Jr playing the position he's playing. I think he will have a good season for us this year. And if he had another year to play, he would probably have a great year as a 5th year player.

You guys hate on chick but he's one of those canes that will have a better pro career. Canes run the wrong system for him, he's a traditional 4-3 DE. Coaches asked him to put on way to many pounds, but he still came to UM because he bleeds orange and green, and any player who bleeds orange and green will never get bashed by me.

Oh I forgot about the mythical "make Chick gain 50+lbs and move him to DT fulltime"

So lemme get this straight.....a guy who yall claim has no athleticism at 255 is supposed to gain 30+ more lbs and somehow be better in a position hes never played in his life?

Anthony Chickillo played his freshman season Miami at 6'4 248. He is now 6'4 277 that is a 29 pound increase in 3 years.

Jadeveon Clowney played his freshman season at 6'6 245. He is now 6'6 274 that is also a 29 pound increase in 3 years.

This staff did not do anything that any other staff would done with this kid. The truth is Chick is a blue collar type of guy who is not athletic enough to make the flashy plays. He does his job, sets the edge, and give crazy effort on every play. I personally prefer Ufomba Kamalu over Chick because of his athleticism, but I appreciate what Chick brings and I think he has done an excellent job in his role.
