### According to one UM football official, Tyriq McCord ended spring ahead of Al-Quadin Muhammad, and Anthony Chickillo ahead of Ufomba Kamalu, in the hotly-contested battle for two starting end jobs. Kamalu, McCord and Muhammad all will play on third down passing situations, with ballyhooed summer arrival Chad Thomas likely joining them in those situations.

We finally have a true Miami rotation at DE. Let's just pray these coaches put these guys in a position to be successful.

Even though I think JF is a terrible DLine Coach, there is talent at the position.

I don't get how Chick can be ahead of anyone having missed almost the whole spring.

I was thinking the same thing. I wish they would just play the ballers instead of thinking they have to put these people in cause he has "experience" that's been our main downfall. play the guys that our balling. i didnt even see Chick in the spring game. he was the unnoticeable to me.

I agree with all of you. IMHO, I think AG and NoD are obsessed with having a senior-laden roster. So, they look at the matchups and if that young guy has yet to become "All World", you place him on second team even though he may be the better player. He still plays A LOT so fans and players don't *****, but he obviously plays second fiddle.

This would do 2 things:
1) Show loyalty to upperclassmen, and 2) Keep younger soon to be "All World" players in the fold longer because they then have to wait their turn to play enough to put up the kind of stats to get noticed, thereby "creating depth".

McCord, Kamalu, Thomas, AQM on 3rd down has a lot of promise.

If this is the case, as a player, I wouldn't come to the U under this leadership. You play the best players period. As a player, if I think that my coaches aren't putting me in, in order to have me stay an additional year, forget about me coming here. You risk too many things that can negatively effect your ability to be drafted.

Furthermore, if this were the case, the coaches don't have the ultimate desire to be the best and win.

I agree with you 100%. Not saying I agree with what they do, but giving an observation. One could argue all day about position and their placement in schemes, but can anyone honestly tell me that Muhammad and McCord aren't the best best DE's(When actually line up in 4-3), that we have? Are Chick and Kamalu actually in the same league? Do they actually "set the edge" so well that it requires Muhammad and McCord to battle for one spot as opposed to each working the opposing sides?

So, Chick is a starter because Golden plays seniors no matter what....but Chick has played more snaps that anyone at UM over the last 3 years leading up to his senior year. How does that work out?

I'm referring to NOW. Now that we have talent for a battle Not when he wont the job by default. But if we want to debate that point, look at the roster the last 3 years PRIOR. He played because we virtually had nobody at the DE position when he got here. Just about every DE recruited was then switched to TE or left the team with the exception of O. Vernon who left early.

Look at this in a different angle...If the NFL draft was tomorrow do you think Chick would be drafted ahead of McCord, AQM, Kamalu, or even Thomas? Good freshman year was all there is to talk about...Last few years have been a slow regression to possibly being picked up by the CFL..

I feel what you are saying but starting two 240 pound DEs that dont play the run good teams are going to rush for 250 yards against the defense . If they actually ran a real 3-4 and have mccord and aqm at olb and move figs inside would be best case scenario.

I wasn't attack your point, as I think it is a valid observation. However, if that is in fact the case, I wouldn't want to come to the U as a recruit. We aren't putting a product on the field, as of yet, that will validate with-holding a younger potential playermaker's playing time.

I also agree with 252 that McCord and AQM aren't every down DE's. We need to either decide to be a 3-4 team or a 4-3 team and stick to it. McCord and AQM should be doing the exact same thing as Aldon Smith in SFran; if we are in fact a 3-4 team. They shouldn't be asked to set the edge, that should be left up to Chick and Kamalu playing the DT position. As 252 mentioned, move Figs inside and allow McCord and AQM to be true edge rushers/OLB.

It enrages me to see video clips of explosive players in position to make explosive plays, defensively, and instead they will take on a blocker in order to free up someone behind them to make the play; resulting in a 2-3 yard gain as opposed to a loss of yardage.

This makes no sense at all. DT's or 5 tech DEs DO NO SET THE EDGE in a 34. You can't just let your OLB in a 3-4 run free without responsibility. In a base 3-4, they will always be responsible for contain unless they are stunting/slanting. Aldon Smith does keep contain. A 5 technique, which is what Chick and UK play in a 5 man front, play head up over the tackle and responsible B&C gaps unless they are 1 gapping.

Gotta know what you're talking about before you criticize. And DnF deserves a ton of it.

You realize that Chick was evaluated as a 4th/5th round draft pick?

This is despite, what a lot of folks view as a uninspired couple of years. He has a lot of potential to make plays this year as some of the pressure/ double teams get moved elsewhere.

if you thought Chick would be better than Clown because of one high school all star game, you aren't very smart.

Chick is who we thought he would be.

It depends on what you'd thought he'd be. Chick played well his TFr year (in a 4-3) and was much lighter and didn't have to play 100 snaps a game like he's had to the last 2 years. He'd be a really nice DE in a 4 man front and could play strong or weak at 250-255. He's way too big now and it's taken away the athleticism that he had. However, with the emergence of Kamalu is going to give Chick some rest and I expect him to have a pretty good year.

Clowney is one of the best athlete's CFB has ever produced. No one thought Chick was going to be as good.

Yes, if the draft were held tomorrow Chick would without a doubt be drafted ahead of McCord, AQM, Kamalu, and especially Thomas. You seem to be basing your argument on possible potential. Starting Chickillo makes absolute sense. He's got experience on a mostly inexperienced line. He's a big-bodied DE that fits the 3-4 lineup that we play on many downs. While AQM and McCord are very athletic, they are different types of ends. They will all get significant playing time depending on the down and distance.
