Defensive adjustments going forward

Stafford and/or Robby Washington. At Safety get Zaquan Patterson and Dylan Day some reps.

I don’t think it’s a personnel issue as much as it was a game plan issue. I wish someone could explain to me why we played 90% of the game with two high safeties and a light box against a quarterback who could not complete a forward pass. They were able to run the ball at will because we let them have the numbers advantage all night. We’re expecting our Mike linebacker to be able to cover a ton of ground because the safety run support is lined up 20 yards deep. Maybe we can stop defending these glorified fullbacks playing quarterback like they’re Dan Marino. I don’t understand why the philosophy wasn’t to make their quarterback beat you throwing downfield. This was the worst called game Guidry has had since he’s been here. I have no idea what he was trying to do on defense.

A lot of times we only had 5 in the box no wonder we were getting gashed up the middle and on the plays Va tech had the positive advantage in numbers far too often. Guidry didn’t do good this game at all and the tackling was atrocious

Not sure what Guidrys game plan was from the beginning, seemed like we played soft all night. Was hoping he would make a halftime adjustment but the 2nd half was worse then the 1st half.

Guidry has a blunder every once in a while. But we need to stop vacating the middle of the field. That needs to be clogged up right from the get go.

The adjustment for that TE was putting 15 on him. Seemed to work. But personnel doesn't matter if we can't defend the middle of the field.

We also need to consider moving Porter back outside and going with a “big” nickel against these power run teams. We’re essentially playing nickel against teams who can’t throw and we’re tasking 180lb cornerbacks with taking on blocks and tackling 230 lb ball carriers. I’d rather see a bigger safety/linebacker type out there against VT who won’t just get swamped by a tight end.

Porter is playing trail technique on so many snaps too, like... That's coaching as well.

You’re on drugs Kiko is a top MLB, he had a bad game. This is college football it happens. Good thing we still won!!

There are very few truly dominant defenses in CFB and by the end of the game (and some of these the last 2-3 quarters) we were playing without Barrow, Alston, Harris, and Baron was playing on guts only (nice to see for a change in today's game), as he simply couldn't chase the QB anytime he got out of the pocket, he was limping badly. And we are already playing without maybe the best player on the team in Bain.

Mauigao is still a very good LB. He missed a couple tackles yes…But has had a good first whatever it's been 16-17 games and will play in the NFL. I do think Aguirre could end up being better

I am wondering where the **** the 2nd and 3rd level defense are on some of these long runs by RB? Some of it is tackling, but some of it is guys just overplaying?



Damari Brown coming back will help, he actually looked very good in 1.5 quarters vs. Florida this year.

True. Cal is going to be physical as well and try to run the ball. Is Harris healthy enough to play cause if he isn’t you got to keep Powell at safety.

I want to see more Patterson. Kid looks fast and seems to be making the right reads when he is in.

Blitzed and got a pressure in the 4th
Beat on a comeback
Made 3 Tackles on the edge
Played boundary and slot
Did not get beat for a TD
Led the team in tackles (8) and solo tackles (6)
Had (0.5) TFL

Yup we got wrecked inside. Even Barrow who has been our best DT got manhandled in the run game before he got injured. Mesidor shouldn't be playing DT except on 3rd and long. We don't have a single DT who can take on a double team and not get blown yards off the ball. Heck most of DTs got blown off the ball with 1 VT OL blocking them. Like on the touchdown run when Kiko missed the tackle he's gotta make the tackle, but VT absolutely destroyed our DTs on that play

Agree-We still don’t have a dominant DT-Agree on Mesidor as well.
Hopefully Scott and the rest of our freshman will be able to really contribute next year.
 
every opponent we have left should run every play to the left edge. We have no idea what to do in that space.

VT could’ve won that game if they just didn’t call a single pass the whole second half lol. We had zero run stopping ability.

Two weeks in a row a white boy in the slot gives us fits. Guidry needs to put Robby on whoever they motion around. He goes, you go.

If Harris is out, I need more Zaquan and I need him in the box (pause?) lol cause he can tackle. Meesh whiffs. Markeith can't wrap up. Force them into 3&long and then let Markeith be sticky
