This pick up stabilizes the DL, because he adds depth & isn't being asked to be a starter though he could be.

A 4-man Edge rush rotation of Bain, Mesidor, Alston & Baron, is exactly what you push all your chips in the middle of the table for when you're in WIN NOW mode.

He's not being asked to come in & anchor the Strong side as the primary starter. His job (I suspect), will be to simply get the QB on pass rush downs. Pressure the pocket & disrupt rhythm, at probably around 35-40 snaps a game.

What I like most, is that last year was the best season of his career, which means he's steadily improved over his 4 years in college. And now this is money year, so his draft status is on the line & all he has to do is get to the QB. He fulfilled his role well playing next to James Pearce Jr last year, who will likely end up as top 5 pick in the 2025 draft. So in this situation, he can play a similar role, with reduced responsibilities & still have equal impact.

Unless he just ends up getting hurt & never plays...

But aside from that, it's a low risk, high reward add that gives us on paper, one of the best DLines in the ACC.
You think this equates to less dropping into coverage or is the scheme the scheme? I'm not sure if that was due to ineffectiveness of the 4-man rush or if that is a Guidry staple.

Do we know is he’s a full go for Fall camp? I ask because I saw this interview from Brohm

"Tyler Baron, unfortunately, is injured right now and we got to get him healthy, which will be a process all the way to fall camp," said Brohm. "But he's played a lot of football as well. He's long and athletic."

He’s a good player. But he’s a bit of a can crusher. He had 12.5 total sacks in 3 years, but half were out of conference. Most of his sacks in SEC play were against lower teams like Vandy, Kentucky, Mizzou. He did not have sacks in big games and had a hard time holding the edge against the run. He does generate a lot of pressure though. He will be a nightmare DE3. Just setting expectations from seeing him his entire career
You can say the same exact thing about James Pearce.

On Pearce, 6 of his 9.5 came against teams ranked 109, 114, 121, and 132 out of 133 teams in sack % and another one came against Austin Peay. Another .5 came against Vandy. And he’s considered the very top of the draft board in 2025

Honestly from his highlights posted in this thread the kid is surprisingly good at setting an edge and being disciplined in the run. Obviously gets a ton of pressure and already assumed that prior to watching tape. Run defense stuff in there was good to see. Great pick up. DE room gonna be scary good

There is a real good poster on here with some sort of U of Tenn insight/connects. Maybe im mistaken but of im not imagining this id like his thoughts on Baron. **** good poster sorry i cant remember his name.
Guessing this is about me - I don't have near the same connection since I've been out of the college game for a few years now and they've moved on to other jobs for the most part.

I did watch Baron some in HS and know some of his HS coaches. Lengthy pass rusher that is stout enough to play the run. I think he thrives in the 4i or 5 tech role. If he's healthy here I think he "starts" opposite of Bain. He or Alston are our 4th DE - either way I'd think it's hard to find another team whose 4th DE is better than one of those guys. 4 guys who could be legit 10 sack guys somewhere else - not sure any of them get there because they're all on the same team.

I've expressed my concerns. He threatened to transfer in 2020, put his name in the portal and removed it in 2021. Entered the portal again in 2023 and committed to Ole Miss, flipped to UL, and then re-entered the portal and came to here. I'm not a fan of those types but this is what it is and he was a needed addition. Hoping our culture is far enough along to hold him to a standard and not let him quit when it gets tough

This ain’t the right thread for this discussion but they had a first round edge and a 2nd round DT.

Also an NFL pick at backer, and a kid there who didn’t get picked but was first-team All-ACC.

They probably had a Top 10-15 defense before the bowl. Maybe we can get there but it’s very much TBD to me. I do think purely front 7, we can possibly match what they had last year with our defense this what. I think overall, the ceiling of this defense is capped by the secondary.

But if we can have a Top 10-15 offense and a Top 30 defense, that’s a REALLY good football team. I’d take that in a heartbeat.
It's just opinion but from what I see Bain will match or surpass what Verse did and our DT room is deeper than what they had. I'm also very high on our LB room and think it all comes together for them this year.

The scheme is the scheme.

The 4-2-5 will always have a Viper dropping into coverage on certain plays due to the style of Blitzing that he incorporates.

After seeing Don run over their defenders I think our front 7 will be better than what they had. 🤷‍♂️

Do you know why he started the bowl game?

Look, you're mixing metaphors. Yes, the coaches SAID that TVD was an elite QB. That is true, they made an effort to pump up his confidence and motivation.

The coaches never said the same of Lou. Never. Did they have to start him because other players were unavailable or not doing what they should be doing? Yes.
